View Full Version : Fairbanks, AK
This is just to say hi and if anyone was interested in knowing anything about the state. I'm not from here, just stationed at Fort Wainwright. I did do the ALCAN in a Jeep back in 2003. I'm with the www.arcticoffroad.com club, but they are more then just Jeeps.

Looks like fun man.
Been meaning to drive the ALCAN to AK for years but with gas prices maybe I'll just fly and rent a jeep there someday.............So far haven't made it north of Edmonton, AB in January. -45F is not even funny:beer: How was the highway? I hear it has gotten better the last few years...I ran into some guys stationed up there at Ft Polk a few years ago. Good bunch of guys. They brought these strange looking snow tracks or snow cats or whatever you call them. They looked like they'd be fun to offroad!!

The ALCAN is a sweet ride. There are a few parts that can be a little hairy in the winter, but for the most part it is ok.
I drove the ALCAN several times when stationed there. I loved it each time. The final time was in the Scrambler, from Anchorage to Baltimore via Oklahoma City, when we PCSd to the UK. That was some trip, with the spouse, 2 yr old and 6mo old.

Sounds like an awesone trip....How did the little guys handle the trip on the rough road? Probably put 'em right to sleep? How is motel availability or should you pack a tent too when you get waaay north?

I assume your talking about the SUS-V....Swiss made and lots of fun in the snow and mud. Not worth a damn on ice though. Sliding one down the side of a mountain on solid ice, now THAT was scary.

Kiddos handled it fine. We typically camped (mucho cheaper) on our trips. A couple of times we splurged for motel (slim pickens once you get into the Yukon) and it was expensive for pretty ratty place. If you are going to make the trip, don't go with a MILEPOST it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know. See info here: http://milepost.com/

Kinda off the subject, but I'm supposed to PCS to Alaska in January, once I'm done with this deployment, just wandering what I'll need for the Jeep to keep it going in the cold weather, also will you still be stationed there by January?

Hey man! I was stationed at Ft Wainwright but lived on Eielson AFB. I was also a member of Arctic Offroad! As a matter of fact, I am still rockin' my AO sticker on my Jeep. Next time you see Kevin a.k.a. ChevyKev, tell him Rob and Stacey say hi!

I don't know what part you are going to but when I was there I was stationed at Eielson for 4 years. Up north I had a battery blanket, oil pan heater and engine block heater and all the plugs tied into a three way adapter and one single plug stuck out of my grill. The vehicle was a 2002 Grand Cherokee. Down near Anchorage I dont believe you need any of that stuff because when we first arrived in Alaska we bought a blazer that was from Anchorage and the dealership in Fairbanks had to put all that stuff on when we bought it. Anchorage is more like Seattle weather. Alaska is the best state I have ever been to. If you get out and stay active it'll be a lot of fun. The coldest I saw while I was there was -62 without wind chill for three days!! AWESOME!! The summers up there are beautiful. Have fun and enjoy.
By now you are broke in. In about a month you will be able to feel the sun
shine through the window. I lived there for 9 years(in North Pole)and it was a great time. Moose hunting with a bow is a kick. I have been back in Idaho for
6 years and I still miss Alaska. Have fun
I'm in Alaska right now and can't wait to get back to Florida in a week. Not that Alaska isn't nice, but I think I'm built more for hot weather. My skinny ass is FREEZING up here!

I was stationed at Eielson and wasn't a member, but from what I can remember, they have to spot your vehicle (they don't stay specific w/ just Jeeps) and leave you a card on your vehicle. Unless they have changed since 2005, it is kinda like an invitation type club. I have never heard anything bad about them. Their website is www.arcticoffroad.com (http://www.arcticoffroad.com). I know for a fact that there is someone with an XJ on this forum that was stationed in AK that was part of them, but I can't remember who it is. Sorry. Try posting a thread with the name Arcticoffroad in the title. That might get you some better repsonses. Good luck.

Well luckily with the 24 hrs of daylight in July it should be fun!

Like was said before, if your going near the interior of Alaska your going to want to add a block heater and make sure your coolent is rated to atleast -60, oil pan heater and a battery pad heater or a trickle charger setup for your battery. I would also recomend a tranny heater and change all your diff's to a synthetic fluid, also if your power steering has PS fluid I would change it to ATF to keep from blowing a power steering line or seals. I spent 4 years up there and just left in Feb, and had done this to all my vehicles and never had any problems with any of them.
i was one of the first members of A/O...great club, good people, good times, some of the best times of my life actually....lots of great wheeling up there...make sure you guys hit up boulder creek down near Delta Junction, it's got some sick rocks..not for the tame at heart...:D

Me and some buddies are trying to start a small Jeep club in town, we have a couple of deployed guys interested and at least three in my unit that are also interested. We're looking to get a meeting one of the upcoming weekends. You can see our page here: http://groups.jeepforum.com/Fairbanks_Jeepers
Just thought that I'd say hello as well. Myself and a few Jeepin buddies are deployed until early September and then we will be back in full effect. Like Ren said above me, check us out at the link in his post. Hope to take it off the pavement with you guys when I return. Cheers!
