Movin to Graff

just got my extension approved for anothe 2 years in deutchland so looks like I'll be making the move to graff when the rest of my battalion relocates after this current deployment. I wanna get a jumpstart on things by gettin some info from you graff guys on here as far as where's a good place to get an apartment. I'm married with no kids but i got a dog and i'm lookin for a place on the economy instead of post housing if possible, any suggestions? dont mind comuting to work as long as its not too far from post.

Well once you get used to Grafenwoehr not being Schweinfurt, it's actually not a bad place to live and work. The military community in Grafenwoehr is, without question, the best in Europe. Great PX, great commissary, close to a lot travel hot spots, and the absolute best gym in the Army. If you are a Jeeper....it's even better.

Depending on what you are looking for, there are a lot of options between private rental and Government leased housing. Gov leased housing areas extend out all over the area, some are even 30-40 minutes away....(most are less though). The private rental options are endless. The area is litered with houses in every direction for as far as you want. I know a handful of guys that even live in Nuremberg and commute.

If you like cities, the three major urban areas within 30 minutes of Grafenwoehr are Weiden, Bayreuth, and Amberg. There are numerous small towns and even more villages with housing. I personally would recommend Bayreuth, it is the largest local city and still a hidden gem in this area as far as Soldiers are concerned. If you do a map recon and know the back roads it litterally takes 30 minutes to get from there to Gate 1.

Being a Jeeper you will soon realize that the off roading possiblities are endless here. This area is known for dirty quaries....nuff said. Plus, MJ can now gain access to the training area for events. I lived in Schweinfurt myself for three years and enjoyed going onto Area Mike, but Grafenwoehr has it beat.

One good piece of advice I can give you will be go get your wife to go ahead and find a place here. I got an early start after 2/1 ID got back from OIF VI-VIII and it paid off. I had a lot to choose from. One month after I got here there was nothing. Housing right now is slim. Once you guys get back and everyone tries to make that move it will be damned near impossible. It is almost impossible right now with incoming personnel to JMTC. Remember: There is no law against you using a German agent to find a house if Housing has nothing. I know guys that did it, Uncle Sam still flips the bill.

NOTE: I live in private rental and just got my neighbor (PV2 with criminal husband) evicted through the Garrison Commander. So there is one private rental apartment that is open and only ten minutes from Gate 1. I'm PCS'ing on 29 OCT anyways (wife may or may not stay here) but I can say the house is nice.
