Well brother, nice to see you heading our way. On post housing is hit and miss IMHO. There are some area's that are nice, and yet others that are like projects. Your rank will make a big difference on what kind of housing you end up with. Ft. Carson like many other posts have all of the CYS, scouts, and school activities. They also have several schools on post. Since my daughter isn't in school yet, we find things to do as a family like take her to the zoo, parks, and just get out of the house. I am sure that some of the members here have school aged children that can enlighten you more on that side of things. For my family and I, we preferred finding a place off post, but not to far away. The neighborhood that we live in is nice and quiet, and still close enough to stores that the wife doesn't have to drive a long time to go anywhere.

Not as cold as you would expect, nothing real soldiers can't handle.

check out colorado4x4.org - great resource for trail runs, tech, vendors, etc.
not bagging on this place at all, but that place is a lot more established and localized for Colorado.

take it from someone still settling down from PCSing here, it is awesome here!!! my wife and I love it here. We bought a house off post not too far away. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods around here if you decide to live off post and same as what was said earlier.... there are some "projects" on post. see you on the trails bro...

This place grows on you real fast. I've never lived in housing on post but MaddMudder and 04JeepGuy do. They should chime in here in a minute. A lot of military who are close to their retirement or ETS end up staying here afterwards. One note: you'll be arriving during the cold part of the year, but it should only be down into the teens.
Congrats on your assignment:)
Colorado Springs is a beautiful place to be stationed, if you like the outdoors you will love it, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking all within a short distance travel.
I was assigned here in 1994 and never left:p

ok someone read my mind. the "Projects" sucks but they do have a/c. not like youll need it in the winter time. but for the most part. The springs is good. people cant drive, and gate 20 is he((. But Im sure you will like it here. I wil be deployed when you get here but I will see you when I get back.

I live in on post housing and like sven said it's hit or miss. If I knew then what i know now, i would have lived of post. There are alot of nice places close to post for rent, and the housing market right now is a buyers market. I'ts all on your preference. I have been on post since 2006 and have seen alot of changes for the worst. It does feel like living in the projects sometimes.

The flip side of this is that they are and have been working on fixing this. What was once only single lane road from Fountain to Gate 20 is being worked on to become double lane in both direction. The construction just seems to be taking for ever.

Make sure you look up the crime rate in the neighborhood you chose if you live off post. I got robbed the 3rd day we were in our house.

Fountain is the bedroom community for Carson. Houses are plentiful and relatively cheap.
