In my search for new shocks on my YJ I went to a local 4WD place in VA Beach. The guy there told me I could go with the $30-50 shocks but for a better ride he suggested ones close to $100 (ea). He didn't tell me a brand or type which bugs me. My question is this: Is the guy trying to make more money off of me or is he legit? I appreciate any and all advice.
I have the Rubicon Express mono tube shocks. check those prices, maybe that is what he was talking about.

I wouldn't buy anything without brand names. I also have RE monotubes as they came with the lift. However, what I'm getting at is you don't want to get charged the same for skyjacker shocks as OME. No name=no purchase. Tell him you can probably find a better deal on the internet anyway, but you were trying to support local businesses.

I'm running 2000ish Ford F-150 rear shocks on the front of my Rubi. They are Gabriel gas shocks (don't remember the exact model name). They were like $53.00 from Autozone, have a lifetime warranty and the RE monotubes can't touch them. I did have to get bar-pin eliminators to make em fit though.;)
If I get time later and someone wants to know, I'll 'splain how they found their way onto my Jeep.
But like everyone else said....if he can't tell you which shock he is trying to sell you, go somewhere else.

You need to do some research... go into the shop with at least some knowledge.
I don't know what kind of Jeep you have. I have a CJ5 with a 304V8 and a 4" Superlift... I went with Superlift Superide shocks and they work for me. I think their cost was $30???

I presently run OME shocks. I love the way they handle. When I put on the 3.5" springs I am going with them again or the Bilstein 5100's.

Believe me I have been researching shocks and a few other things I want to do with the jeep for a while.
I have one problem, or more depending if you talk to my girlfriend, and that is I really dont know what this jeep really has or what was done to it. And I still leaning alot everyday about her!
The shop I was talking about is a national company that is franchised out and all of their products are warrentied, which is great for us!!
When selecting shocks online, if thats the route I eventually decide to take, do i chose based on the body lift or the total lift?

you need to measure between the mounts at full compression and full droop...send the measurments to me..and i can tell you what rancho or monroe shock will fit...with that info the guy at the parts store can cross reference to any brand you want

The shocks depend on the amount of suspension lift you have. Body lifts do not really matter. Some will tell you that you can get a shock with more compression because of the body lift. But to make it easy, just order by the amount of suspension lift.

Replaced the Teraflex shocks that came with the 4" lift installed by the PO with OME's...huge difference. Much improved ride on and off-road, especially on washboard roads

I had great results with the SkyJacker Nitro 8000s that I put on 1st project TJ. They rode great on the highway and 4 wheeled awesome too. Quadratec (www.quadratec.com (http://www.quadratec.com)) now has a shock advisor section which really helps with picking out shocks for different amounts of lift........They (the SkyJackers) are under $40 bucks apiece and have a $35 rebate on a set of 4 right now....(http://www.quadratec.com/advisor/jeep_shocks/) is the link for the advice page. Quadratec also provides tech support over the phone which I have used before with good results.

Im thinking that what the parts guy at that store was telling you is, that for leaf spring jeeps that the $30 hydro shocks will ride better on that then the $100 nitro shocks. Im not a shock expert by any means but that is what i think he was trying to tell you.

I have Fox shocks w/res. they work very well, they are expensive but well worth it as they can be rebuilt ie. (not buying 5 sets of shocks) ,you can change in nitrogen pressure to change the ride.
We use to desert race and I love bilstein and fox . All the parts are available, be careful not all res. shocks are rebuildable, I had a set of Rubicon Express res shocks and bent the rod had to toss em. I also have fabtech coilovers on the front very happy with them, hope the info helps.

i ran the OME long arm shocks and they were ok. I also ran a set of bilstien 5100's they were nice but a little stiff. I think that my tera VSS shocks have been the best for my springs. might wanna look at those they make them for the YJ. :-)
