Myself and my haynes manual will be replacing the tranfercase output seals next weekend, probably at the belvoir auto shop, any and all are invited to come point and laugh. I'll probably do diff input seals on the same day depending on how the transfer case goes.

Too bad you are so far away. I would give you a hand. I have had a few transfer cases apart. Not my present one, but a few others from jeeps. Even had the one from my 1960 CJ-5 "Willys". I really wish I still owned that one.
If I am off, I will try to be there.

I'm not positive on this, so don't quote me. I'm pretty sure that the diff input seal requires you to take out the pinion, which will require a couple specialty tools to reseat it. I think that it requires reseating it perfectly to the original depth, rechecking backlash, and I'm sure a bunch of other crap. Again, the only reason I think this is because when we regeared front and back, we changed out seals too while we had it apart.

So, I'm set that I'll be at the shop on saturday replacing some seals and changing some fluids. I'll Be there as soon as the shop opens.
I will be there unless the Army has some fun stuff planned for me that weekend. Not sure how much help I will be, but I will bring my vice grips.
:)

are you talking about the pinion seal or the axle seals. The pinion seal is easy if it does not have a crush sleave on it. Take of the pinion nut pull off the yoke and pop out the seal and replace with new. Some people say you should replace the pinion nuts every time you take it off I don't and tighten up the pinion nut. If you have a crush sleave I know its on a AMC20 and dana35 rear axle you do the same and when putting the pinion nut back on only tighen it to 50 FT/LBs and your done. Hope this helps.

50 ft lbs? I dunno why it seemed more complicated than that. I think it was because I was regearing at the same time. Both the Dana 30 and 35 have crush sleeves.

yep, thems the ones. i was also told to mark the nut and threads and then you know where exactly to tighten to.

I got the 50 FT/LBs from a mechanic that did my daughters dana 35 who called a friend of his at a jeep dealership . When you are setting up a new R/P your are crushing the sleve and setting the preload at the same time.

Cool. I wasn't saying anyone was wrong here, I just did a lot while the seals were getting changed out and a lot was information overload. I went from never seeing the inside of a pumpkin to regearing and installing a new rear axle.
