New to this site and figured I would post some pictures and start a build thread so everyone could check out the truck. I'm kind of in the middle of my build so I'll only post certain pictures, to see the rest visit the link in my signature. It is a bit of a slow process because the truck is at a buddies garage and I only get about 1-2 days per week to work on it. Enjoy the pictures, there will be more to follow I promise.

Bed Removed, gas tank was attached to underside of bed (not a fan of that) used some straps to hold the tank on until we pulled it in the garage.

Painted frame after cleaning with wire wheel. Used Valspar Tractor and Implement paint and brushed it on. I'm really happy with the results the paint has some sort of self-smoothing compound in it, there were no brush marks at all.

These pictures are of the rear after I got the 6 inch springs on as well as the axle re-geared and everything painted. Only thing left for the rear is to figure out a larger gas tank, brake lines, brakes, shocks, and the bed.

That is where the truck sits as of now. This week the plan is to cut and patch the rotten areas on the underside of the bed and clean it to be undercoated. Pictures of my progress should be posted by the end of the week. I'm also looking into installing a 25 gallon Ford Bronco tank to give me a little more range than the 15-18 gallon fabricated tank that was on the truck.

Been pretty busy the past few weeks but this coming week I should be able to get back to working on the truck. I made a decision to go with a 1978 Ford Bronco 25 gallon fuel tank. I'm currently in Texas so when I get home this weekend I'll get started on installing the tank and upload pictures. It shouldn't be too difficult I just have to move the cross member to the rear about 4-5 inches. More to follow next week (including pictures)....

Finally back to work after a long break. I finished the bottom of the bed. There were some rough spots most of which I patched/replaced. A couple of the brackets needed to be replaced as well. I plan on finishing the interior of the bed after it is on the truck once again. There is a good chance I will remove and replace the wheel wells because that is where the most of the rot was on the bed and there is still some there. It is very difficult and frustrating to try MIG welding 26 gauge sheet metal (I'm sure most of you know that already). It has been quite awhile since the last time I welded, they are pretty rough. Anyways here are some pictures of the bed.

Here are a couple pictures of the fuel tank mock I was able to complete tonight. Picked up the needed material and got all pieces cut to size. On Thursday I'll complete the installation.
CutterN55 I know how you feel, this truck had a custom made 15 gallon tank when I bought it. It felt like I was stopping every other day for fuel! Hopefully this 25 gallon tank will increase my range a bit.
Only thing missing in these photos are the straps.

Degreasing the frame and cab was a big pain, I'm sure you are well aware of that. I should have spent more time on it than I did but I used carb cleaner, a putty knife, and rags. Took time but I don't know of any better way to do it. Thought about using degreaser but that should be washed off with water and the truck was in the garage on jack stands at the time. If your jeep is on rubber you could go the degreaser route and then pressure wash it. Just a couple ideas.

Nice. Simple green and a wash rack? I think I can do that. Maybe I'll grab a grill brush too.

Instead of shopping on Black Friday I was able to get the Part Time kit installed in my Quadratrac. The install was very simple, only complaint about the whole process was the instructions included from Mile Marker were referring to Item #'s and there was no drawing with the item #'s listed. Even without that it was a simple install. I added a HI/LOW gear reduction unit on the QT as well. Here a few pics:

So you were AWD and now you can select? How does the lever system work?
J10 Jeeper
11-28-2009, 10:15
The Quadratrac transfer case in the truck was a full time 4WD case from factory. A company called Mile Marker make this kit that turns the case into a part time 4WD case by switching one of the sprockets. The switching from 2WD to 4WD is done with a vacuum switch located in the glove box. Originally the switch was to disengage the front axle for emergency purposes. Jeep also made a HI/LOW Reduction unit for the transfer case that just bolts on and the shifter comes through the floor. I have yet to make my cut in the floor for the HI/LOW lever. I'll make sure I post pictures of that install.

Simple Green works great for most jobs but If even simple green is not enough to cut through the crud - move up to Purple Power degreaser. Careful with this stuff however because it can take off some kinds of paint.
Finally if you have to pull out the big guns on engine grease that is so thick it just will not come off, use GUNK Engine Brite. Careful with that stuff however because its an actual solvent and not at all enviornmentally friendly. Dont need a superfund site in your front yard.....
I had to use all of the above to clean the grease nightmare out of the engine bay and under the Comanche. Alot of work, but on the brite side it kept the truck from rusting! :p

I plan on having it painted professionally still not sure what color I want to go with but I'm leaning towards a charcoal color similar to what it looks like now. The interior is on hold until I finish everything on the exterior and get it back on the road. It is not in rough shape but has some 'house' carpet that doesn't look very nice. I also plan on pulling the bench and putting in some CJ style bucket seats. I will take some interior shots later this week also and get them up on here.

The Q-trac mod stops the front drive shaft from spinning right? You gonna keep the front vacuum dico'd axle? Any plans for a square drive shaft now? The 10's looking good Matt, keep it up. I havn't been able to tool around on my Wag in a while, I've been working on a scrambler for a guy to generate funds.
Oh, a tip for busting rust from Greg Taylor on IFSJA... Evapo-rust. Works good. Takes off rust w/out taking off any good metal as a grinder would. I've used it plenty on the Scrambler I'm working on. Give it a good scrub w/ a soaked steel wool pad a let it sit. whipe it off w/ a damp rag and blow-dry it w' a compressor. Kills all rust prior to paint. I love it.

Thanks for the advice on the rust, I'll look into that for next time. Correct on the Qtrac mod it stops the front drive shaft from spinning. I am going to keep the stock driveshafts and axle that are on the truck. I plan on firing her up and pulling it out from the garage next week. I'll make sure I get some good pictures to include some interior shots and post them up here.
Thanks again for all the good comments. More to follow....

It has been quite awhile since I have posted on the project. Times have been very busy lately but I still had some time to work on the J10. Tomorrow if all goes according to plan the J10 should back out of the garage on it's own power and I will be able to get some good pictures to post.
The truck is running and sounds excellent with the open Edelbrock Shorty Headers. Exhaust is in the near future.
More to follow (pictures) this week.........

Didn't get the brake's bled today but did get the timing set and the fuel lines installed. Tomorrow the brakes will be bled and the J10 will finally drive out of the garage under its own power. In the mean time here are a few pics. They aren't that good because it is still in the garage, tomorrow when it is outside I'll get better ones.

Oh by the way it is nice to see the truck with the hood down once again :D
Also is there anyway to post videos? I took video the other day of the J10 running with open headers. Sounds very strong even though video doesn't do it justice.

Is it going to fit out the door:eek:
Looking good!

Haha yeah as it sits it won't fit. The lights on top of the cab are coming off and I'm going to deflate the tires enough to get it out the door. Worst case is I have stock wheels and tires that I can put on to make it fit.

Thats funny! When I have the roof rack on either of my Jeeps, I need to pull it off to get into either garage.
Bummer was, I installed it while the Jeep was in the garage:eek:
Then had to pull it, drive out, and re attatch it:D
Just thought your door looked a little short for the Jeep in that one pic.

Well here the pictures are. The J10 finally has emerged from its hibernation! I'm pretty excited to be driving it, even if it is just around the yard. There are obviously things that still need to be done but it runs and drives on its own power. The only leak seems to be coming from the rear main area. The rear main was replaced I'm hoping it seals itself or is not actually from the rear main. I don't feel like ripping it apart quite yet! The rear end sags a little, I'm going to add 2" blocks to the rear to level the truck. The front drive shaft also needs to be finished and installed. Also the bed, rear wiring harness, and steering parts need to be finished to name a few. Anyways here are the latest and greatest pictures! Enjoy!

Well it has been quite a long time since I have made any updates to this build thread, and I see that this forum has changed a lot since I have last signed on. The past 6 months have been very busy with a new house purchase and most of my time has been spent working on that to make it habitable.
The truck is now at my house and road worthy. I still need a PA vehicle inspection for the truck and there are some other small issues I need to finish like hooking up the fuel sending unit, adding a breather for the front axle, fuel filler needs to be re-worked, and some touch-up paint.
I also need to add a coating to the bed of the truck as well as a couple patches left to added to the bed. Also I haven't even started the interior but will get to that slowly over the winter I believe.
I also need to get a new front and rear bumper for the truck. Currently I have the stock bumpers on as you can see in the pictures but they are just to make me legal in PA and I have fabricated some brackets to make them fit with my body lift.
Anyways enough of me talking, here are a couple pictures of the truck sitting in my driveway.

Here are a few pictures of the interior of the truck. I'm finally getting a little bit of time coming up to get some work done. Been a mess at my house with the recent rain we had. Woke up at 3am one morning to 7 inches of water in my basement! Not a very good wake-up!
Anyways here are some shots the the interior. I plan on getting rid of the "house" carpet and replacing the bench seat with these:
