View Full Version : Anyone at Fort Hood?
Anyone call "the great place" home for now?
"The Great Place" my A**.....Been stuck there three times. Some people like it. I thought Texas was great. Not a big fan of Ft Hood. The second time I was stationed there people were still alowd to go offroading in a couple of the training areas. Unfortunately, they put a stop to that.

I was there from 02 - 06 but half of that time I was in the sandbox. They finally started to get a club going just before I left. I'll see if I can dig up the web address if anyone is interested. They are using one of the Yahoo groups.
I will be PCSing to Hood next week. Should be interesting. I am set to deploy a few months after arriving. Hopefully I can get some wheeling in before I leave.
I was at hood 91-92, 96-99, 00-02. Its not likely that I'm going back. Have fun down there.

I was at "The Hood" from '95-'98, minus the time in the sandbox. I liked TX, didn't much care for Killeen, but there were a lot of great places to eat. Mex, Asian and one geat Thia place that had a buffet, you could actually hit it during lunch, and eat leisurely, making back to the shop in time.
Being the largest post in the free world, it has it's fair share of idiots.
We were down on 16th street. The one mexican place I remember well was right outside the gate and sold something like 4 tacos for a buck. The tacos sucked, but it was always funny going in the mexican restaurant and seeing posters of bruce lee on the wall.
We used to also hit CiCi's for their buffet. It was like 3 bucks at the time, perfect for the poor PFC bumming a ride during lunch. That was a cheap all you can eat meal if you did not pay the buck for the drink.

There's a guy down there putting an LS2 and some Dynatrac 60's in his TJ. I've pm'd him, but I think he's already a JF junkie.

Im at Hood now and there are all kind of places to wheel. Im usually out in the training areas on the weekends looking for places to fish. So I kinda just throw a fishing rod in the Jeep and do some trail riding. As long as you have the permit to be off the hard ball road range control or MPs dont bother you. There are some serious spots to wheel but I dont wanna do anything crazy out there by myself
Range Control must have slacked off quite a bit...recently.

Not sure how uch more time you have to serve at Hood, but I will be there in Nov. Maybe you can show me some of the spots, or if you have the grids and can shoot them to me, I have some Hod maps sitting around the house I can use prior to rolling out. Right now the only thing listed on the maps is the fishing holes. :)

I'm stationed at Hood (currently in Iraq, though). Like was said before, on Hood you need the range permit and all the paper work to be a "legal" sportsman "recon-ing" the fishing hole or future deer stand site etc... to go off-road in the training areas. However...if they catch you wheelin' to be wheelin', it's a hefty fine. That being said, there a lots of places to legally wheel that aren't too far. Katemcy rocks (100 miles or so and awesome!!1) and Long's Ranch (75 miles or so) are my too favorite spots. Check out my photobucket (dirtwarrior97) for lots of pictures of both. A couple of clubs in the area are the Killeen-Fort Hood Chapter of the Texas 4 Wheel Drive Association (yahoo groups) and the Texas Chapter of jeeperz.com (great group, been wheeling with them many times). I love Texas and hope to stay there for a while.

Thanks. signed up with jeeperz to see what they are all about. I saw a lot of towns listed in profiles located around the Fort Hood area.

Actually Im off to Iraq on the 1st. Only been here for 2 months or so now. Just ready to get the deployment over with and PCS from this place. Not a big fan of Hood. When in comes to legal or illegal places to wheel I stick around the lakes between Post and Belton. Just sorta go off the beatin trail if you know what I mean. Just wish there were some places a little closer for wheelin

me and a wheel buddy of mine went wheelin just southeast of robert gray airfield and within 15 min we were stopped by the military po. he let us go with the stern warning that if you don't own it, don't wheel on it or inpounding would ensue speech. took his word for it. there's a place 15-20 min south of killeen in florence that has mud races if you're into that. i know my jeep only does 30 and thats in 3rd gear so racing isn't in my jeep vocab! longranchwheeling.com looks promising. only 1 hr 20 min away. over 1300 acres of 4 wheel fun. kind a place to wheel all day camp out then drive home the next day type place. and now that its getting tolerable, temperature wise, i'll be looking to go before november - when i head to JRTC for a month - or after the new year!

I am down for some wheeling after we get down there in Nov. I may have to wait a few weeks to get settled in and inprocessed, but Truck helped us get a trailer so we can tow the jeep down and we will be using it to get to those spots that are a good distance away from Hood. If you see me on post, I have a green LJ with a bunch of crap bolted to it and MilitaryJeepers stickers on it.

Ive been here since 06 have a bunch of us from the cav that wheel, we're not a huge fan of longs ranch, but its not bad. We stick to Hidden Falls, its a good place, all marked and rated trails. On site air, and always events going on. Good folks. Im also fairly sure katemcy has closed, don't quote me on that tho.
I should be back to Hood after next summer.

Katemcy is re-opening in a new location February 2010. It will still be near Mason (same granite rock!).
