Guy's my gas guage died on me back in the summer and I haven't found the problem yet. I have an 88 YJ which has the guage cluster that all comes out in one piece. I took it out and checked it. It seems to be ok. I cleaned the ribbon connector and reinstalled, same problem. My next shot at fixing this is checking the ground back at the tank. If not this I am leaning to the sending unit. It worked when I bought the jeep one day it quit working so I tapped the guage and it came up and worked for a bit then went out again. Do the guages go bad? Anyone have any better ideas for me.

Thanks,
WVO

The guage on my YJ (90) is bad also. It reads full when I fill it up and 200 miles later reads half a tank when it's empty. After some research and talking to people, I found at that they are notorious for acting up. When I got it, I filled it up, grabbed a 5 gallon fuel can, reset the trip odometer to zero and drove it until it completely ran out of gas. I noted the mileage on my trip odometer and now use that as my gas guage.

I am sure some of the guy here that have been around Jeeps for awhile can tell you more about them.

Oops, sorry I put this in the wrong category to start with. I actually attempted to move it but couldn't figure it out.

Thanks,

This is a good site for CJ gas gauge problems. It might help.
