I have a terrible rattle/grinding noise coming from under my jeep. I broke out the haynes repair manual and have checked the trans and transfer case as well as replaced all the u joints in the drive line. The noise is the worst while accelerating and dies off when I get off the throttle. The transmission shifts firm and the clutch is tight. Anyone have any ideas or should I break down and take it to a shop?
My exhaust pipe does that at the same times you mentioned.

Did you give the catalytic converter a good once over? Perhaps, disconnect it give a gentle shake and see if it sounds like it's full of scrap metal.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being undrivable.

Second that notion, as you checked the other possible culprits.

Get the rubber mallet out and starting tapping the exhaust from the cat back. If anything is loose (pieces from the cat) in the exhaust, you should be able to hear it while doing this.

I agree with the above. Although you might want to check the front drive shafts slip joint(thats the issue with my Jeep). Odds are it is an exhaust issue.

exhaust checks out............took the front drive shaft completely out and its still there.........could it be the rear differential

I think that rattling is one of those things you gotta be there to hear. I have so much shit rattle it's unreal :D. I hope it's not your diffs, but if it's bad when you accelerate and eases up when you let off, it could be. When/what were you doing the last time you were in them?

pull the rear drive shaft Drive it around in 4 wheel (short trip) might be a rear u joint. If that does not help have you been going threw mud and water alot? If so could be your throw out bearing. Clutch will still work for the time being but it will make a hell of a squeel and grinding noise till it blows up and then your SOL. Hard to guess without being there but sounds like it is only making this noise when torque is applied to the driveline. So those would be my two guesses if the other stuff listed above is not the problem.

Did you accidentally put the transfer case in gear? Does the rig feel "jumpy" or "twitchy" at all while on pavement?
Does it make the noise only while in gear or does it make the noise while in neutral as well?

I loaned my junk to a buddy that didn't have a car for the past few months. It was making the noise when I picked it up and I have had no luck locating the source. I am afraid that it may be the transfer case or the rear.

Do you have access to a shop? If not, would you be willing to get it to belvoir? I'm sure we can get some guys together and figure it out.

aaahhhhh, friends. I would ask your buddy if he heard it and what exactly he was doing when it started.
Cool avatar.

I am going to replace the rear u joints and see if thats the culprit the transfer case seems to be working fine and I have even change the oil in both it and the tranny. I will be throwing things back together this weekend to further diagnose the problem. My buddy claims that it was not making a noise at all. There is no grinding or rattle in neutral it is only there when the driveline is under load/torque.
I will be taking it to a "real mechanic" if these aren't the fixes.
