One day I went to a local High School Auto shop program to look a car for my daughter. Found her car and got a 2 for 1 deal on this: 1990 Jeep Comanche pickup. 4.0 6, 5 speed, 4x4, A/C, long bed. I had lusted after the Brute conversion pickups and always liked the Comanche’s. An impulse buy later it was mine.

Got it home and started looking it over.
It had the ‘Radio Delete’ option (Hole in the dash with wires hanging out), interior was really grungy, headliner was missing, sunvisors were trashed and the ends flopped around, carpet was shot and smelled of mildew, shifter boot had holes in it, pedal covers were worn through, front brakes were worn out, front grille was broken, wiper blades were shot, the insulation was falling off the battery cables, A/C doesn’t work, the front center axle disconnect is inop, and the engine/transmission/transfer case had enough grease all over them to solve the oil crisis. Good points were that the engine runs great, transmission shifts just fine, and the body and underneath has very little rust. It had a new battery and tires on it. Took these pix after scrubbing with simple green over two weekends and replacing the sunvisors with some from a 95 Cherokee.

Then degreased the engine three times with lots of simple green and brushing, replaced the battery cables and wiper blades, and a neighbor and I did a front brake job – new pads and rotors and flushed the entire system. It stops a lot better! Changed the air filter, engine oil and filter, trans oil with Redline MTF. Before buying the truck I had found a deal on a set of Canyons with BFG 30’s. I was going to flip them for more money but decided that they would look good on the Manche. Next came a good condition grille off a cash for clunkers Cherokee.

Started driving it daily and LOVED it! Gets about 20 mpg and is so fun to drive with the standard trans.
While driving, the rear suspension was squeaking like an old, overused bed on a honeymoon night. So out came the PowerTank and off came the rear shocks. On went some new ones from NAPA. It still squeaked! Turned out the e brake cables were rubbing against the frame brackets. Wrapped em in some rubber vacuum hose and the squeaking stopped.

I didn’t like the stock ‘Wide Angle’ or flag mirror, and it did not have a passenger side mirror from the factory. I researched the truck and decided that I wanted to install black full mirrors, swap the idiot light cluster for a full gauge cluster from a Cherokee, and swap the factory bench for buckets and a console after replacing the carpet and headliner. So I started collecting the parts. Some came from a 95 XJ that was being parted out on post and some came off of Craigslist

First cleaned up the cluster, polished the lens on it, disassembled the speedo and rolled the odometer to match the one in the truck. (Used a good writeup on the NAXJA site for this) Installed it in the Truck. Then replaced the idiot light switches on the engine with senders for the gauges. The coolant temp gauge was inop.

Well I cannot weld, it’s been raining, we are buying a house, and I’m otherwise busy as shyte so I tackled the next easy job – acquiring another cluster and putting the dash back together. Got another cluster from a 90 XJ from the JY a few miles down RT 1, cleaned it up and matched the odo like before, tested it and then installed it. Added the Cherokee clock and a Sony IPOD ready stereo.

Next will be the floor fix. Gonna wire wheel all the rust off, cut the cancer from around the holes and have some patches welded on. Then it will get a coat of POR 15 before the new carpet and bucket seats go in. :)

Hey I like it, it looks pretty good. I seen a show on TRUCKS sat morning if the guage cluster was scratched up they cleaned and lightly sanded it then sprayed with clear coat (something along those lines) and it looked new.

HELL YEAH! :D
I paid $900 and a set of used 33's for the truck. Now I OWN it. I bought the LJ in 2005 and the bank still owns it LOL. With the parts I have purchased so far, I still have less than $1,500 in it. I bought a Chevy S10 - 4 cyl 2WD brand new in 1996 for $14,000. This is a much better truck, and its cool. A few days ago somebody asked me 'Is that really a Jeep? I diddnt think they made trucks.'
I figure after all I want to do to it, Ill still have less than $5,000 in it - and I can take as long as I want doing it.
Finally, I now have a Jeep that can do this:

Your truck is looking real good. Jeep trucks are the way to go! You have me thinking about looking into getting a Comanche now. Despite the little bit of rot on your floor boards it looks like a very clean truck. How does the underside of the truck and engine look?

It is a good condition truck. It was a PA truck but it was undercoated and apparently not driven much in winter. The underside is in great condition.
The frame and under the bed has some slight surface rust, the rear shocks were rusted out, the brake lines were rusted, but replaced by a previous owner. The tire winch was rusted solid, but i have aquired a replacement. Its small things that need to be replaced like the fuel filter bracket and gas tank straps are all rusty. The tank was either replaced by a previous owner or never rusted. Gonna look for a filter bracket in the junk yards (Should be the same as a 1990 Cherokee), and the tank straps can problably just be cleaned up and painted. The gas tank skid is missing.
As for the rest of the truck, the bottoms of the doors have some rust (Gonna just pull another set of doors from a Cherokee when the time comes to paint the truck) and there is a small amount of rust near the driver side tail light and bottom of the tailgate. There is no rust in the rockers, cab corners, or upper rear wheel wells! :) The engine compartment is in excellent condition. I think it had a valve cover or EGR leak and there was enough grease all over evreything to keep it from rusting LOL. I have de greased it all and it looks pretty good.

Gotta call from MVC yesterday.
Floors are fixed, dash lights work fine.
Bucket seats aint gonna work without fabrication..........:(
Any swap of buckets from a Cherokee into a Comanche will require some work as the floor brackets are diffrent.
I had read alot on Comanche Club before buying the seats and it seemed that all that was required was to remove the Cherokee brackets from the sliders, remove the Comanche brackets from the bench, and bolt the Cherokee sliders to the Comanche brackets.
Well this works just fine if you are swapping seats from a 86 to 93. In 94 the seats changed.
Lessons learned:
Easiest way to swap buckets into a bench Comanche is to get Comanche buckets from a junkyard (Well DUH!)
Easiest way to swap Cherokee bucket seats into a bench Comanche is to find bucket seats from a 2 Door 86 to 93 Cherokee.

Getting ready to recontact them. Been in a CIP outbrief all morning.
Several options:
There are bucket seats from a 1990 Comanche sitting in a junkyard 20 miles from them - dont know how much they cost, what condition they are in or if just the brackets can be pulled.
Cut the floor supports from the 95 Cherokee that the seats came from and Fed Ex them to MVC. Mvc then cuts the Comanche floor supports and seat mounting bolts out, welds the 95 supports in and bolts in the seats to the mounts.
Fabricate new brackets from scratch. MVC said they can do this.
Problems with some of the above: Comanche buckets or brackets may be in bad shape or cost half a million dollars. I gots no extra money right now. I think the centering ball and u joints in the LJ front driveshaft are going again - and I still have to pay for the work on the MJ.
I cut one of the original Cherokee Brackets off myself and tossed it in the trash because I thought it was not needed.
So I dont know whats going to happen with the current seats yet.

Just got off the phone with MVC. They are going to contact the JY about the 90 Comanche seats/brackets. If its going to be too expensive, they are going to fabricate new ones from scratch. I told them if its too much trouble just to put the bench back in it.
Quote from Matt 'That truck isnt going back down there without buckets in it.' I know I can make a mount that is stronger and safer than the original as well as aesthetically pleasing as seen from the outside.'
Gotta love those guys. Top notch fabricators that can use big words like 'aesthetically pleasing.' :D

Dont worry, you will see bolth rigs again :D The LJ still needs a cage and gears, and the MJ needs the body work, a paint job, lift, front winch bumper and winch, custom rear bumper, truck box...................
Im extremely happy with the truck now! Soooo comfy.
Tell Matt I said amazing attention to detail. If you look close at the pic of the driver side seat bracket, the bottom is bent to fit flush and match the curve of the floor tunnel. A very small detail, but a very important one.

Aarrghhhhhh........
This morning I go out to the Manche to take my son to get an X box game he has been saving for. After the last few days of rains there are puddles in bolth floorboards. I was hoping the floor problem was just from the holes. Still got to get the surface rust off and prep the floor, and now this leak has to be found and fixed before the carpet can go back in. (Where is our head bang smiley?)
I spent some time on Comanche Club forum and it seems that there are about a million ways for water to get into an early Comanche/Cherokee.
Cowl drains can be plugged, windshield leaks, rear hood seal, firewall plugs, door weatherstrips, door windows, b pillar vents on the Manche...........
I love this truck but its making me work at it. Im learning more about Comanche's/early Cherokees than I ever wanted to know.
Keep myself motivated by seeing the total basket cases they are saving over on CC. Mine is in really good shape compared to some of them.

Fun to drive and almost 20 mpg. Its just that the lift, tires, Hanson front bumper and winch keep getting pushed back by mundane things like holes in the floor, rusted out exhaust pipes and water leaks (It refuses to stop raining around here!) Havent posted in this thread for a Looooong time.
Mostly just driving it. The glam Jeep (LJ) has been sucking up all of the available funds. Did replace the exhaust that fell off with a new cat, muffler and complete pipe from the cat back with new hangars. Kudo's to SGT Huffman who welded it for me.
The front grille and headlight surrounds were sanded and painted semigloss black.
The heater hoses started leaking coolant so I replaced all the heater system hoses, y pipe, and vac control valve with OEM parts.
Picked up a nice second hand black chrome truck box and one of the Soldiers helped me install it.
Finally, picked up a Cherokee Dana 44 rear axle housing (Stripped). Will build it with factory TracLok limited slip, 3.55 gears, new shafts, and disc brakes then sling it under the truck to replace the turdy five. Ill post a few pix as soon as the weather breaks again.
Coming this summer: New windshield with later model Cherokee rubber seal to replace the chrome metal one that leaks, and new door seals to stop the leaks. Repair the driver window regulator. Remove the seats and sand the floor to bare metal. Prep the floor with rust bullet anti rust coating and new insulation. Install new carpet and reinstall the seats. Line X the bed and install an adjustable cargo tiedown system.

Did a little work to the MJ today. It got a new valve cover gasket so hopefully it dosent have self changing oil anymore. Also got new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I also had a new oxygen sensor installed when the safety inspection was done two days ago. The truck feels like it has 50 more horsepower now and runs smooth.
Hmmmmm, amazing what a tuneup can do. One of the plug wires was totally shot at one of the boots to the distributor cap. Was running on 5 1/2 cylinders LOL. The engine has been running fine so I never checked or replaced these parts. It has 191,500 miles now - who knows when the last tune up was.
Huge thanks to Frank from Beltway 4WD. While I tackled the engine stuff. He pulled apart two door window regulators with some help from Truck, then reinstalled the good one in the MJ. YAY! The driver window works now!!!! http://www.beltway4wd.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
From the discussions, banging, and clattering of tools I heard in the background, it was not an easy job. Thanks again Frank and Thanks to Truck for hosting at his place.
Axle builds are awaiting funds as Im retired now and without a real job........ :)
Jealous of the truck. found one a few weeks ago, but the six says I gotta have a back seat, so if I want a jeep I'd best just keep the one I have now.

Thanks! I have less than $2,000 in this rig and its one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. (And I have owned many cars and a few trucks....) I have challenged myself to build it as cheaply as possible, and most of the parts have come from Cherokees heading for or in the the Junkyard.
The LJ has been semi retired and the MJ is the daily driver now. Its so fun to drive with the 5 speed and gets about 20 mpg in the city. Just wished the A/C worked! Its been 90-110 degrees around heere for the past few weeks. Heater and A/C are the next project I think.
I know where there is a 2WD rust free project Comanche - Just needs an 4.0 engine and some body/paint. $300. Check the for sale section. Getting it to Colorado would be a challenge though.
I had one back in the day--my first truck, 2wd long bed. wish I could get that truck back now. I got 19MPG with the auto trans.

Getting the Comanche ready for its trip out to Colorado. Flushed the heater core and replaced the thermostat. I had already replaced the heater hoses and heater control valve. Alot of nasty, rusty sludge came out.
Viola! We have heat. (Important in Colorado.) Ill rebuild the A/C next summer if I need it.
Replaced the air filter, and changed the oil in the rear diff. I dont think that it had ever been changed. Gearset looked OK but it was reallly nasty in there. Id been putting this off as I wanted the build the Dana 44, but no time or money for the 44 housing yet. Ill be taking it with me in the bed when I depart.
I think next Ill do somthing easy like fixing the interior lights (One of the two works when it feels like it.), installing better speakers in the doors and pillars, and cleaning up the floor and reinstalling the carpet.

No recent pix. Just been too buisy.
Ill take some shots in Colorado. Want to get one after the windshield gets yanked and replaced with the newer style rubber seal instead of the chrome strip it has and the carpet is re installed. Ill be out there by myself until summer so mabe I can get some work done to the truck.
But prob not. Its pretty cold there in the winter LOL.
Today I reinstalled the plastic interior molding for the kick panels, inside door sills, and under the inside of the rear window. I was waiting for the carpet re install, but got to take em with the truck.....
