If I have to paint bare steel bars that will not be exposed to the elements all the time, such as a sport cage, what should I paint them with? I don't want to pay the money to powdercoat, but I also don't want something that is going to scratch off easily. I am looking for black. I was thinking that POR stuff because it is supposed to be pretty tough.

Thanks for any ideas.

use bed liner that would be sweet

I would want the smooth bed liner. Do they sell the smooth stuff or is that just a professional spray on option? Also, would I paint before I put on the bed liner?

yeah the smooth stuff is spray on and no you don't paint you just clean it and stick it

Just as long as you prep the bars properly (sand them down / Wipe all dust and other contaminants with Xinol), you should be able to use flat black rust o-leum with out it ever chipping off.

x2... and if it does it is a lot easier and cheaper to touch up than the bedliner.

I bought a spray paint can style bedliner at Auto Zone that I used on the four corners of my Jeep. It is pretty tough and relatively smooth. The rest of my Jeep is flat black and you can't tell the corners are different until you are up close. It would be worth looking into and pretty cheap to do.

If you have a soft top, paint will eventually wear off on the top. Even POR will fade or chip (although not as easily). I agree with the rust-o-leum idea. If it is preped well, it will last just as long and twice as easy to touch up.

Rustoleum appliance paint has epoxy in it but the color choices are limited to like 3 or 4. It is tough paint though.

Thanks. I am going to look into that appliance paint tomorrow. I want to prep and paint that stuff to get it in this weekend....I hope.
