Well I got them all done :) and I got to actualy do about 95% of the work.
Here I am getting ready to go to the shop

I did the rear on Fri and the front on sat. I will say the AMC 20 IS WAY BIGGER than the D30 LOL
here is the rear pattern

that was the first try too :)I did find out one of the springs on the rear brakes broke (that was causing the klunking noise I had just started hearing
her's the rear

the front ALL pulled apart

NOT a lot of room in the front

and the front installed

here are the shifters. I'm not sure if I'll leave them here or not, but they DO work

and looking down from my point of view

Overall I'm verry happy with the 4.88's. Now I have not gotten the Jeep off base yet, but it REALLY feels easier to drive with them.
any questions or comments feel free to ask away

Congrats on the duel OX's. Nice Rig.. Just curious, who made your shackle reversal. I am interested because I notices your front end geometry and your use of your shackles. Should drive well and no bump steer.

It's the MORE stubby SRS w/buggy springs. it gave me no EXTRA lift ;) Now granted I do need to take out the shims I had in the front, but I'll try to do that next weekend (I just have never gotten around to doing it)

Looks good. How many hours total do you guesstimate it took? I ask because this is on my list...way down the road, but on the list.

Well I went in at about 9Am on both days and was out the door at 1900 (7PM) so about 8-9 hours each day if you count the lunch brake.. Now also remeber this was for and OLD 84 CJ. my buddy did his 06 TJ and I think they got both front and rear done in a day.

NOW we got both sets of gears set up almost on the first try. the rear was one time, and the front we had to mess with shims for a while. we DID have some set up bearings for the front (cause the shims go on before the bearings) and that made life WAY better.

I'm just glad that I can now fill in this check box now.

thanks guys. yeah they shift in and out SUPER easy. Granted I might need to mess with the rear just a bit. I was in my parking lot at work All loose gravel, and I was messing with it... was fine and then made a clunking noise, and then fine again. I'm not really getting the description right... sorry.

again so far I love the gears, not too low from what I can tell.. I'm gonna take it off base today, and put a bit of driving on it. I'll let yall know

my buddy put 5.13's in his TJ and he actualy gained 2MPG supposedly

well I got to do my first real drive, so far it's GREAT I'm sure the spedo is off, cause it was SPOT on with 4.10's and the 35's. but I was tooling along and looked down and it said 65 LOL I need VERY little gas to get moving. and I can literaly just cruse in 3rd and that's about all I need.

So far all I can say is I LOVE the 4.88's. but we'll see about gas. At least in town I should see a slight improvement.

One thing I did notice is the jeep feels TIGHT (that's the best way to describe it) Personaly I'm thinking it's the BL and the poly bushings. I like it.

For sure. The only hit I noticed going to 4.56 was on the highway. I'm glad you like it. I loved the difference in starting off too. Can't wait to see the pics of you offroad with those lockers going...

Me either. I still need to get somewhere to measure the compressed length for the front drive shaft... I really need that poor thing LOL

Personaly I'm not gonna be doing any "real" hwy driving with the CJ. that's for the burb...and when ever I get around to getting my pick up/tow vehical

What's your experience level with working on gears? I've got an OX for my AMC 20 rear end sitting on the shelf 'cause I'm too scared to put it in my self and haven't had the cash to pay someone.

If you don't replace the gears to you have to reset the lash on them?

Well I did mine with the guys at my auto hobby shop, you might ask at the bases around you.

The nice thing about the AMC20 is the shims go on AFTER the bearings so you can mess with them nice and easy. the ONE real problem is the pinion, cause those shims go in before the bearing race :( . overall doing it was not TOOO bad, you do need to have some specilty tools to do it, but it was not THAT hard. Would I do it again? well maybe, but only if I have to.

if you are useing the same gears you "SHOULD" be able to just put it back together. we actualy just reused the shims on mine and it set up that first time (I think I lucked out)
