View Full Version : Good Deal???
Found an online store that sells rim/tire packages.
Set of 4 32" ProComp Mud terrain
4 Series 51 black rockcrawler steelies
Mounted, balanced, lugs and center caps, and shipping
$869
Sound like a good deal???
Sounds better than what I was able to find online during my rim/tire search. Being that my YJ was lifted with a 3.5 inch kit from BDS with 1" lift shackles I know for a fact that you will have plenty of room for the 32's. i never rubbed once in the mountains of NC. That is until we rolled down the side of a mountain.

I don't think it is really that great of a deal, as the ProComp tire is really not that great of a tire. The rubber compound they use is softer than average, which isn't entirely bad as it does tend to be more "grippy" on smooth surfaces. However, this softness also means the tire is going to wear faster than others. Procomp tires are also only 3ply, as compaired to the Maxxis Bighorn which is an 6 ply tire at 32"... 4 for $573.00 delievered. You'd still have to get wheels, mounted and balancing.... however wheels are cheap off craigslist or ebay as well.

Agreed, but my only reservation with a 6-ply tire on a dual purpose rig (DD and trails) is that the 6 ply will generally not flex nearly as well. Yes, the sidewalls are stronger, but it is a tradeoff...as is the softer compound...better in rain and on rocks but faster wearing than say a Dunlop, which has a nice slow-wearing compound, but might be a little "slicker" offroad and in the rain as a general rule. Bottom line is that we all have to go with sneakers that we are happy with for our own rigs.

Keeping in mind with what USMCHarleyGuy & Difranco are talking about, she uses it primarily as a daily driver during the good weather days of the year. Her wheeling likes with it are primarly Flagpole/Peter's Mill/Salt Shed/ Deadman's, so nothing to extreme. Prefers Mud to Rock.
Figure Black Steelies that she wants are on average $40-50 each new for simple ones. 4 would be $200, Bighorns using your quote at $573 brings the total to $773 with mounting and balancing to be figured in. Just using the Merchants around the corner for pricing looking at $19 per tire for mount & balance. So another $80, bringing us to $863, so is $6 bucks saving worth the effort to be put into running the tires up to Merchants and getting them to do it? Though I would probably just go over to Ft Belvoir and get it done.
So is Bighorn that much better? My only experience with them is I use it as my spare in the XJ, it's never touched ground yet. So keep her driving habits in mind.
If there is that great a difference, I don't mind her spending a bit more or going through more effort to get it done. That and the lift ain't until the 24th so I have a bit of time before she gets to antsy. :D

I don't know about wheeling the areas you speak of as I am way out west. My comments are strictly based on the research I did and the values I placed high on my list of requirements. This is my reasoning based on things I am most concerned with.
My values
1. Even wear, long tire life.
I do a five tire rotations and the miles I can eek out per set of tires is important. While they are wear item that need to be replaced, I'd still rather spend money on other mods.
2. Overall strength and durability of tire.
There are lots of sharp, jagged rocks, sticks and other debris on the trails around here. Strong sidewalls are important, see value #1.
3. On road performance. (90% of driving here)
I drive year round so I needed something that could handle lots of wet weather pavement, compact snow/ice as I drive two lane mountain passes alot.
4. Off road performance.
In the Pacific Northwest you can get about any type of terrain from rock crawling, to narrow winding jeep trails you can barely fit through, mud bogs, deep snow, sand dunes. It really is the smorgassboard of wheeling around here. I tend work the the narrow jeep trails, deep snow and the occasional water crossing/mud bog crossing.
The tires I narrowed it down to were as follows:
Goodyear MTR
Cooper STT
Toyo OpenCountry MT
Maxxis Bighorn
Firestone Destination MT
BFG Mud Terrain T/A (Many sideway failures in these parts.)
I suggested the Bighorn because it is the least expensive of the group and gets just as good of reviews as of them. I am using the Goodyear MTR, which I absolutely love. BFG would be my last choice, especially since they cost the same as an MTR.
As for steelie wheels... around here people tend to bend them up so their tire bead looses its seat and so they develop slow air leaks. My wheels are aluminum alloy wheels that were $55 a piece, but they've held up great and keep the air in the tire.
As for sidewall flex, the MTR has some of the stiffist on the market and it really hasn't been an issue for me. I've really tried to build a good all round jeep... a sand jeep will kick my butt on the dunes, just like a mudder with the 2:1 xfer case & TSL Tires in the mud bogs will do me in as well. However my jeep will make a good to well showing in any terrain, and be fun no matter where I go or do.
So as to the definition of "Better"; it really depends upon what you value most in a tire. If Super Flexy sidewalls / Soft Rubber grippiness are high on your list then the ProComp's may be the way to go.
In life in general the terms better, best, etc. all kind of depend on the type of cat you are trying to skin.
UPDATE:
Tires came today. Not mounted and balanced like I was expecting. A little perterbed. Called the company and they apologized about it and said if I would take them have them mounted and fax them the recipt they would reimburse me for the cost.
Will update when thats all taken care of to make sure they keep good on their promise.

I had Big Horns on my Sahara prior to the lift. If you can stand the road noise they are an awsome tire. The are far more durable than other MT I have put on my vehicles. I put 12,000 miles on them and gave the stock rims and with the Bighorns to my buddy who is still running them today he has put around 20,000 miles on them and still has over half the tread. No crazy tread wear or anything. The only reason I didn't get them again was my girlfriend at the time hated the road noise.

That's why ya gotta marry a girl like Georgia. She can fall asleep to the M/T road noise.

Thats awesome! My wife wont give up her 5.5 lifted w/ 32's jeep XJ for a gas sippin little car for nothing! She says that driving "those little f-in cars make her sick!" We live in Ashburn and she drives out to Falls church every day! 32 miles one way. to the tune to 80.00 a week in fuel. Im gonna go broke!

Great now we all hate you.
I think it is a good deal. Yes the pro comps will wear a little faster but they ride good and will hold up to the trails around here.
Great now we all hate you.
I'm used to it. At my office I'm not even the lowest consumer though. One of my buddies at work drives exactly 1 mile each way. And he drives a 38mpg car.

Probably because they are street tires and you don't have hundreds of pounds of skids and bumpers and all the other goodies on your jeep to hlp knock the gas mileage down a notch. Once you throw some larger tires on there and start racking up the additional weight, you will see a change.

I'm getting 19 out of the jk rubicon running 28 miles to work and back. It actually went up (was getting 18.3.to 18.5) since I took off the Airraid CAI and Poweraid Spacer, go figure...
^ lol!
Yeah, I'll be 'looking forward' to the lower mpg. But since I'm only refueling every two weeks, I don't even pay attention to gas prices. I hope to be adding a bigger motor to the mix down the road. Hopefully I won't choke the 2.5L with added crap for too long!
