View Full Version : Returning Home
Well the time as come for me to leave the great Pacific Northwest and Joint Base Lewis-McChord and return home to beautiful Colorado. I will be departing the first week of May and report in to NORAD-USNORTHCOM mid-month. I call Monument home, so this is great for me and even though I have had a blast wheeling up here with Cascade 4x4's and the Wheelers for the Wounded and other events, my Jeep is better suited for Colorado's trails. Looking forward to linking up with some of you in the Colorado Springs Chapter once I get there.

Watch out gals and guys, grandpa is coming to show you how to wheel:D. Colorado will never be the same. Have a safe trip.
Reporting to NORAD, that sounds very cool, I have been trying to go to the Springs for about 4 years with no joy. Keep a close eye on Santa for us!!!

Awesome. Welcome back and just in time for wheeling above the timberline.
Airforce26yrs, actually my oldest daughter and her family will be out for a visit Memorial Day weekend and I hope to take the grandkids Jeeping :)
Fred, tracking Santa is actually a lot of fun, I voulunteered one year to help out and answer the phones, you have to get signed up early as they usually have way more volunteers than shifts to offer :)
ColoFreeJeeper yeah, there is nothing like it. One of the biggest challenges to wheeling above 12,000' is keeping your eyes on the trail and not driving off the edge as you watch an Eagle soar above you, or the mountian goats on the next ridge :)

Welcome back to old stomping grounds!
I may be filling the void you are creating (as an MJ Member) at JBLM so any contacts/advice you might be able to provide will be greatly appreciated.
I've had sporadic contact with some of the folk in the Great Northwest but nothing sustained.
Take Care and le-me-no please.
Tahnks,
Bob

And just when I though you'd finally have someone your own age to play with. :D I hope I can wheel with you before you split.
SGM O, great to hear. I'm sure you know of some nice places to play that'll benefit the club.
Shortcut (a.k.a. Bob) before I learned about MJ I hooked up with Cascade 4x4s (www.cascade4x4s.com (http://www.cascade4x4s.com)) which is a Tacoma based club that hold their meetings on the 2nd Thursday of the month at the Parkland/Spanaway Library on Route 7. They do a monthly club run as well. I have dragged a couple of MJ folks along, but most of the Jeepers that really seem to like to wheel all deployed last summer. The good news is they will be back this summer to wheel. I will send you a pm with some other good links.
Irish_Assasin will do, and I can't wait to meet you. As the Grandson of Irish immigrants, I got to hear the story behind your handle :)
Trailsnail there are loads of places just off the Old Stage/Gold Camp Road, Rampart Range to play on for day trips. I usually take guests on the Phantom Canyon/Shelf Road loop with a lunch stop in Canon City, just for the views.
I have not done Liberty down in Penrose yet, I have heard that is one of the hardest trails around but could never find someone who wanted to give it a go. Chinaman's Gulch is fun and I hear that Long Water is finally open again.
Alot of what my wife and I have done is just packed up the Jeep and ended up into the mountains to explore, upper Arkansas Valley and the Tarryall's, west of Buena Vista and then there is always Ouray, Silverton and Telluride on long weekends :)

Have a safe trip home and look forward to meeting you. Now, how do I get to work at Norad? Haha. I always wonder if I can even drive up that road and not get shot at, haha j/k. I certainly would love to see what goes on in there though, it's intriguing because it's so secret. :)

Liberty isnt the hard trail. there are 4 down there.
Liberty (longest trail out of the 4) do able one 35's, 33's with a good driver, lockers and armor.)
Independance (Hard)
Patriot (very hard)
Freedom (very short trail easy way out after dropping in Indy and realizign it was a bad idea)
Mrnine324 not much happens up there any more, they moved the day to day operations to Peterson, but I can tell you that Hollywood has made the mountain a whole lot more glamorous than it really is :) I know the Navy folks feel right at home since every thing is battle ship gray and there are bulkheads, passage ways and ladders...they even have a boat they float in the cooling water pond for promotions, re-enlistments, etc. :)
JimhatTJ thanks for the run down...like I said never been there, only new it as Liberty and everyone always said don't try it alone.

Sven,
Don't think he's as old as I am:beer:
I don't know how probable this PCS is but if it works out I told them I have obligations here in the Springs through the beginning of August. So hopefully it won't happen until after CMJRM.

What I can't figure out is why the Airforce Folk I see headed to work in the morning and making the turn off of 115 to the mountain are wearing flight suits. Are they worried that their trash can might catch on fire or what?:D
