View Full Version : The "other" Jeep!
Here is a pic of the "other" jeep.... Hasn't been wheeled yet, I got it when on leave and pretty much had to board the plane after driving it 500 miles back home.....Wife drives it and loves it though...Still bone stock....Haven't figured out what to do first when I get home.....:confused: Any suggestions? Maybe start with the bumpers, then the lift, bigger tires, more lights, oh yeah need a winch, too....Tops gotta go for the summer...Need mirror mover brackets to take off doors...need lower gears if I lift it enough to clear 37s... whew........

I have mirror mover brackets laying around the house. They should work with your jeep.
Here is my "other jeep"...it doesn't get driven much :o:D

My vote would be get rid of the monster ugly bumpers and then front tube fenders. I hate the stock fenders on the JK. Just look silly to me i guess. But on the good side of things 3" of lift is good for 37's :)
I like the '08 just fine on the highway......very good road manners even at 80 mph....The electric disconnects are pretty cool too....Has a pesky leak over the dash though where the two panels meet at the windshield....Wife says not bad, just a few drops...Put new Besttop Sailcloth top on old project jeep and could go thru powerwash with no leaks, though. You'd think a new hardtop wouldn't leak in a rain shower.... The V-6 is different too...Jury still out on that one. Hard to beat the 4.0....Best ride quality of any jeep wrangler for a DD I've ever seen...Yep, the front bumper is butt ugly.....It's on the list to do...Lifts seem to be a lot cheaper on the JKs too for the same tire size compared to TJs.....

Sure is. Let me know your jury's verdict. I've heard mix reviews. Some on JF said that the 2d isn't bad but it's the 4dr that could use some extra mmph. Do you have the 2 or 3 piece top? I think I saw somewhere else (nova?) where a couple tops leaked. Dunno what they did. When my hard top had a little leak up front, I went to Wal-Mart and picked up some foam window seal strip and ran it along the windjam. No noise or water since. Dunno if that'd help

I was tempted to trade in my rubi on a new rubi but could not bring myself to do it. Only have 26k on my 04 and they were trying to kill me on trade in, Knowing i would see my jeep on there lot 2 days later with 30K sticker on it i said nope. maybe since the 04 is paid off i will go with a jk for DD. but gas????? :( maybe a honda...lol :)
Has the 3 piece top......Really like the look of this bumper!! Have had good luck with Warn products in the past...
What bumper setup?
Ooops, hit "submit reply" instead of "manage attachments" got it fixed now....Hrednek, do what I did. Keep old jeep and new jeep.....Tell wife new jeep is hers, then  whoops wife may read this........

That's a good lookin setup. Dunno if you're hooked on either warn or that setup, but there was a sweet ass setup in 4wd's new-ish catalog by Big Daddy offroad I think? I'll look it up tonight if you want...

At least one...but probably enough parts to build a second one...3 tubs, couple engines, several different trannies, a few D300s, frame, springs, etc....
rebuild him quote has been in sig for awhile...six million dollar man
I'll get to it eventually.

I'd like to see that setup, if ya can find it again.....Ive got the 4wd.com jeepers pocket guide 2008 here in hand and don't see it....:D
Here's a Body Armor front bumper that is awesome too....Put a Body Armor swing away on my old traded off 2000 wrangler and it was heavily built!!! Good quality...

Found it, but they don't have it for the JK yet. Sorry.

Have you found one with a grill hoop? That'd look sick on that wide grill.
The Body Armor bumper in the 4wd.com catalog shows a small grill hoop where the Piaa lights are on the above pic, will do more looking....
Start with a mild lift, nothing fancy, unless your going to be doing hard core wheeling. The some wheel & tires. Now you know what the stance of the JK is and it will be easier to figure which bumper, flares, winch, ect.
A mild lift is not exspensive and can be insatlled by the average mechanic, direct bolt on. The only thing you will need after lift installed is front end alignment
My list would be:
Mild Lift (3") Bolt on
Wheels & Tires (don't go overboard on tire size for gas mileage)
Bumper w/Tow Points
Winch
To save money when you decide to install lift, have a lift party, should only take several people one day to install a lift. That's what we do around here.
Just my thoughts

1. Steering Stab Relo - Brett Woods
2. Evap Canister Relo - Brett Woods
3. Engine and Tranny Armor as a minimum, Poly Performance, Skid Row, etc.
4. Heavy Duty Diff Covers, Trail Duty 12.5 lbs each.
5. Frame mounted sliders, I chose Shrockworks and also kept the stock Rubicon sliders on, special ordered.
6. Shrockworks front (stubby or mid width) and rear bumpers (Stubby or Full width), want a front bumper where the winch sits down between the frame rails and doesn't block air flow. The new rear bumper is awesome.
7. Winch Warn Power Plant
8. Lift and Tires...

I'd listen to John (dragline) as we tested his jeep last time we were out. The top two I'd consider essential as that's what failed.

Yup, got that right, still working the bugs out... I hate water for now but will ford streams/rivers again.... Evap cans are on backorder but they are relatively cheap approx $45.00, I ordered a spare.

Nice Jeep. Heck, if it's the wife's, ask her,,, Ha.. I know, I know. Truck, your other Jeep picture had me laughing. "I know it's in there, that's where I left it!!" HA. Enjoy the weekend folks,,,
Good info I didn't know about relocating the evap can...Guess it gets damaged, torn off where its currently located?

Yup, not protected at all, there are skids out there for about $100.00 but they don't really address the real problem. Then there are relo kits. Brett Woods has a kit that moves it up and over the rear axle. Most folks are running this kit, check some of the other forums for JKs. Most folks are wondering why Jeep put it there to begin with? The conclusion is that is was an after thought. Pic shows the can relocated above the rear axle, no worries about getting damaged.

Cool, thanks for the info, Dragline!
Hmmm....wonder if a 34x12.50 TrXus MT will fit under a JK w/3" of lift....Have to do some websurfin' now.......Then have to figure out if it's better to go with 15" wheel with the JK bolt pattern or stay with a 17" wheel with better than stock backspacing........ edit: oh yeah, you can fit 35s under a JK w/3" of lift!
35's should fit with 3" lift on JK's.
Take that leaky roof back to the dealer. The have a fix for it, a new seal. I had the same leak and it only took 2 visits the get the modification done. No more leak.
Made a morale call home and asked the wife to take the '08 in and get that hardtop leak fixed at the dealership........
My wife took the '08 in for hardtop leak repair......They said they can get it with no problem under warranty...windshield already cracked and the cost for replacement thru the dealership is $450 ....I told her to start calling the aftermarket glass/windshield repair shops to get an idea of their cost........I thought windshields were 110 bucks plus install  Will find out more after she makes the calls!

Most insurance company's will replace a cracked windshield at no cost to you... i.e. USAA will do it once a year. I'd look into it, and just say you took a rock to the windshield.
Yep, checked into that.......State Farm will replace the windshield for a $250 deductible :( Am hoping to find an aftermarket install for less than the deductible.....Will post later with results.......
Yea had a friend just lift hers and threw 35's under and only put like a 2.5" lift

We decided to wait until a bigger rock hits the windshield or the crack gets bigger to replace it, since State Farm dropped the free (no deductible) windshield repair :(
An update on the windshield....Windshield shop can replace the windshield for $248. This includes price of windshield, labor, etc....Will have it done once I finish demobilizing and get back home...
