Ryan, Andrew, and I are leaving the DC metro area this summer, and this'll most likely be the last run with one or more of us in this area. I'm looking to do a Saturday hookup in the afternoon at the normal destinations, do flagpole at night and set up camp for a night of drinking shenaniganry. Wake up Sunday and do a Dry River run and head back to the house. Would anyone be down for this?

Ryan's TDY the middle two weekends...
We are talking about re-arranging things and going with yall. Pending things go ok with my lift this weekend--will make for a good shakedown run.
Oh yea do you know where yall plan on camping at? If we go we might bring down the trailer and want to make sure its ok left while we are out. Might bring the dogs(2) also.
theyeti1775
05-18-2008, 21:37
Also need to know where we are camping, considering both Jeeps with the Jeep trailer, need to know if I should plan on running trails with it or if there is a safe spot to chain it with all the camping gear.

Not solid on the camp site yet. Ryan and I were talking about getting in touch with big dogs and maybe hitting it up on sunday and maybe try and camp there Saturday night. Other than that, we may just camp out at either the bottom of flagpole or the top. Does anyone have a preference?
theyeti1775
05-18-2008, 21:55
No real preference for either. Big Dogs is good cause its all private, and would be comfortable about chaining the trailer at a site. If we are doing Flagpole/Salt Shed then I'll just plan on pulling on through. It's on 30's so it can clear almost everything the XJ/YJ can. Its the same one I had on the YJ when it was totally stock during the Trail Clean up.
I sent big Boys Playground an email about an hour agao asking if I could take them up on their offer to call them this week and talk about putting something together. They have an even on the 28th, but I am not sure what it is yet.
As soon as I hear something, I will post it up.
I can Lead no prob! But needs to be the weekend of the 28th and 29th!

Alrighty guys. Working on the camping scenario. Delaware Jeep Association is going to be camping at Brandywine Recreation Area, and has opened the gates to our group too. I figure this will be a good bet so Yeti and Georgia can drop their trailer there before we even go. They are coming down friday, wheeling friday and saturday, and leaving sunday. That just means that we gotta clear camp before them (no problem). I figure we're better off camping out in a bigger group (safety in numbers) and they have amenities. I need everyone''s .02's about it ASAP so I can let them know how long to hold the gates open.

05-20-2008, 11:37
How about this for a plan?
Plan on camping at either top of Flag Pole (either top or at Meadow Knob) or at the Dry River Entrance of Salt Shed.
I know Georgia will want to play since her rig will be lifted so I'll tote the trailer on mine while we wheel, if we bring it. Was mainly considering bringing it just because it could carry a bunch of gear plus firewood.
korisu56
05-20-2008, 11:42
I like the dry river entrance idea. there's fire pits and we're semi-close to the road for those who want to meet up on Sunday morning. So meet up saturday afternoon, then we can take the dam route up flagpole, and the other back down. Should be late by then.
theyeti1775
05-20-2008, 11:57
So Dry River/Salt Shed for Saturday and Flag Pole for Sunday?
I know the last BWJ/MJ run we did DR/SS both directions for the day. Probably would have enough time for SS to DR, DR to SS, & SS to DR since we aren't worried about getting back on the road. Those that don't want to do the 2nd SS to DR can take 33 around back to Camp and start getting set up.
Unless someone knows other trails to do there? I've only run DR/SS and Flagpole, so I know I couldn't guide any on any of the others.
korisu56
05-20-2008, 12:08
We're not doing flagpole unless either:
A-Night time
B-Camping up top
I thought you wanted to do dictum? Rick knows where thats at. I'll lead through dry river, and he'll lead through dictum. We can do DR/SS 8 times on Saturday if you want. Then we'll set up camp, and if people want to do it at night they can. I think it'd be fun at night.
theyeti1775
05-20-2008, 12:39
I'll do Dictum's Ridge, never been there.
Camp Dry River
Plan a Night Time run for those of us that wish no sleep.
Up the other side of Flagpole, come down Union Springs, left on 33 back to Salt Shed and run that back to Camp at Dry River for a night run. Heck I don't even care if we do Flagpole or not, since they closed off the Mud Pits at the one point.
Don't matter to me either way, I'm still going to strap Diego at one point again.
I know it hurt that pride being pulled out by the Cow's 2.8L.

Though I wouldn't mind if Big Dogs comes through for us. I've been there yet.
Ryan might want to try to get hold of Gotoman (Bill) on NJ, and asking him if there is a better POC for it. I know he goes up there quite bit.
Bill I think you are talking about something else---there is Big Dogs in Gore and Big Boys Playground in Harrisonburg. The one Ryan is reffering to is I think Big Boys.
I thought Dictum Ridge was closed?

I was refering to Gore, I thought Ryan said Dogs. Oops. See why I married her. :D
Dictum & Second Mountain both go through closed spells.
I just plan on having a good time.
Wish I could do it. Street tires and a VERY tired suspension aren't great for off roading. Hopefully my build goes quickly!

The Salt Shed/Dry River run I did in the snow and ice with Georgia's YJ stock with only an Engine skid, 1" Body Lift and Mud Terrain Tires. Lost 4wd the 1st hole in, and did all of it in 2wd Low. Got stuck 3 times where I had to be strapped. I did one bypass just because I knew I would be strapped in that hole.
Just stay out of the deep holes and use the bypasses you will be ok and still have fun. Don't be afraid of the strap, its your friend. Lord knows my Cow has been strapped more times than I remember.

Ok, I'll talk it over with the wife, Been putting that wanna-go-camping bug in her ear.. See If I can't sneak away for the weekend! Maybe my Jeep will be painted and lifted by then :D
As for that TJ hook, are there mounting points on the YJ or would I be getting friendly with the 1/2" bit?
For rear tow points on my YJ we just found a used hidden reciever hitch and got a slide in d-shackle.
^ not a bad Idea at all. I'm planning on getting a new rear bumper with hitch and I'm looking more and more at the (i think it is) WARN bumper with the removable swing out tire rack. You can buy the parts seperate from each other (the swing is more than the bumper I think!!)

l3it3r - Talk to Groundpounder about bumpers. They are sweet ones. Wish he made them for XJ's.
Erik - Generally a convoy thread will start the week before the ride. Generally many will meet at the Rest Area just outside of Manassas on West bound I66 and Jeepvoy down chatting away on the CB's the whole way.
Eddie (groundoounderfab) is online right now. Shoot him a private message at BESRK (http://www.militaryjeepers.com/community/private.php?do=newpm&u=89)
He is retired Army and located around the VA beach area.

Had an email this morning tell me new fuel pump was on the way. Yippie.
When that gets in the Cow is taking a trip over to Belvoir, will schedule in another thread.
--------------------------------------
But Back to the Topic at hand.
What is the best meeting times for everyone?
Do you want to start butt-crack early? or a little later in the day.
I'm thinking heading early, the Cow is slow (might change with new fuel pump solving a lot of issues).
Generally we all fill up at the Sheetz in Harrisonburg after we get off I81.
Sheetz - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=798+east+market+st,+harrisonburg,+va+22801&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=39.490342,119.53125&ie=UTF8&ll=38.445993,-78.851688&spn=0.004773,0.014591&z=16&iwloc=addr (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=798+east+market+st,+harrisonburg,+va+22801&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=39.490342,119.53125&ie=UTF8&ll=38.445993,-78.851688&spn=0.004773,0.014591&z=16&iwloc=addr)
Large groups meet up at the old Food Lion so as not to overflow the Sheetz:
(Don't have my NJ access at work for a direct link but will post it later tonight.)
The ride will be stocker friendly, there are bypasses for most of the holes. You will need tow points on your vehicle. If you don't have tow points you can get them easily enough from Quadratec and generally shipped withing 2 days. They are driveway installs. If your stock just watch the Jeep in front of you, you will see the lines as it drives through. Don't be afraid to ask for a spotter, everyone will be more than willing to help you.
Rule Number One, especially since this is an overnighter - No Drinking N Wheeling.
Rule Number Two - No wheeling alone, especially at night while everyone camping.
Rule Number Three - Enjoy yourself
Since we have not heard back from Big Boys & such, current plan is to camp at the Dry River entrance to Salt Shed. For those concerned with weather, spouses whose idea of roughing it is lack of a breakfast buffet, there are reasonable priced motels in Harrisonburg (20 minutes away from fun).
For those without a CB already, they are highly recommended else we just talk about you and your Jeep. It's one of the best under $100 mod's you can make as it makes the whole experience a joy.
Currently there is no plan for going up to Flag Pole, unless we get a wild burr and want to go up at night.
Dictum Ridge/Second Mountain are a possible run just need someone else on lead as I've never run them before. More than willing to tailgun that one.

I say we meet up at noon on 66. That gives us a 1400 or so departure time from Sheetz, so we can run whatever without having to wait 12 hours for it to get dark, with the sun setting around 2030 now. We leave sheetz at 1400, do dry river for a few hours, say 1700 or so, then go set up camp blah blah. Decide on a night run after we set it up and everything is good to go. Just an idear.

Bill, Dictum looks like its open and looks like it could be fun:
Dictum Thread (http://novajeepers.com/index.php?name=NewForums&file=viewtopic&t=22640)
Talked to Big Boys. Was told that the 28th is a members only, but he will allow us on. It is pay to play, but he said if we can get enough people he can try to work a discount. Standard rate is 10 per vehicle and 10 per person. Place looks like a blast and he said that he can let us camp there if needed.
We just need to coordinate with him in advance. From the pics at their site, the money seems worth it for a day of playing around. He did say to get their by noon to enjoy everything the and has to offer.

We also have to keep in mind we have a few stockers that are possibly going.
Think we might keep it to the free stuff and schedule something for Big Boys in the future when they don't have a private event already going on.
Does anyone need a shake down of their Jeep prior to the Camping Trip? Georgia and I were thinking about a Peter's Mill run with either just ourselves or a very limited number of others this coming weekend. Peter's Mill is mainly ATV's so you have to watch it going through and cost $5/driver. Good for a shakedown run of your Jeep.

I can afford 20 dollars, I'll never have the chance again.
I will never have the chance again either. Also, he said that he may be able to work us out a little discount if we have a good size group going. They have 80 acres of land, but I don't know how much is open to play on. All the photos I have seen look like fun, and this would be a good chance for some people that are going to stay in the area to bring a little AAR back for their paid local jeep club to see if they may want to go in the future again.
He seemed willing to work with us and said that he would let us in that day. I don't know what event is going on that day, but can find out more if I email him.
The idea of going is something to throw around.

I wasn't insinuating anything, just wanted to make sure I was tracking 100%. I don't like unexpected costs, and if I go there expecting to pay 20 bucks for Jen and I, I don't want to wind up spending 30.

I'll go even if I can't wheel my rig. I'll ride along and take photos and vids. We're all but sold on it. I think we'll end up going with the Jeep, but the Durango might be a good alternative vehicle (plus the pig can tow)

We won't know about any discount if any is going to be laid in front of us until I can give him a yes or no about riding on his land that Saturday. We could have fun, or we could have a horrible time. It is a shot in the dark, but I have yet to hear anyone from Beltway or NOVA pipe in about this place and when we were talking he said that they used to be really popular, but then other places were opening up and people were not driving the distance to go to his land.
He mentioned camping. I don't know if it costs to camp or not. I can find out more later once I learn if we plan on going that day or not.

So........... are we going to flagpole at night or wheeling at the park all weekend?
theyeti1775
05-28-2008, 09:42
My vote is stay stocker friendly. For the actual ride/camping.
But since we were planning a Sheetz meet at 1400, then those that want to do Big Boys could do so in the earlier part of the day. Say meet there at 0730ish, wheel for 4-6 hours. Than meet up with the main group at Sheetz.
Can everyone agree to this?
Saturday 0800 - 1300 Wheel at Big Boys
(this is for those that want to play at a pay park, I know I haven't been there cost is $10 per Jeep and $10 per person; i.e. Yeti and Cow Beast is $20 or Yeti with passenger and Cow is $30)
1400 Meet up at Sheetz
1430 - 1500 Convoy out to Salt Shed, air down and on a trail by 1530
Figure 1530 - 1800 wheeling and general fun at whatever trail we determine to do in the time. Around 1800 since it is still light out then, set camp at Dry River entrance of Salt Shed. That gives us time set up tents, a good fire, and food going. Also gives us time for a quick town run for gassing up for night activities and last minute supplies (you know like towels for Chris when he fails his snorkel qual).
Figure 2000 twillight will be beginning and Night Runs will be made.
Sunday - break camp; wheel some more than head home.
I heard Dictum Ridge and Second MOuntain are open now also.

Ryan, is the event at big boys on Saturday an overnight event, or will it just be us?
My only concern is how hard is some of the stuff at Big Boys? (and my concern at Dictum Ridge also)
If they have an event goin on there are some hardcore folks I dont wanna get caught up in that and make folks mad for having to wait or anything like that.
But since we were planning a Sheetz meet at 1400, then those that want to do Big Boys could do so in the earlier part of the day. Say meet there at 0730ish, wheel for 4-6 hours. Than meet up with the main group at Sheetz.
Bill, you will be here long after I leave and having a good reputation with the POC at Big Boys may benefit you and any jeep club you belong to well into the future, so do you want to contact them and see what they can do for us and also learn more about the times they are open and stuff like that? I can send you the info, but it is listed on their webpage.
Just let me know and I will break contact with them so they don't have too many people contacting them about the same thing. It seems like Big Boys has had a pretty good slow down in attendance and if the time had there is good enough and they work with the pricing, it may help to bring some more people from NOVA and maybe Beltway should they decide to head down that direction also in the future.
Just let me know if you want to contact them. They aready know about us and that we are trying to get a group together to hit that land at the end of June.

My only concern is how hard is some of the stuff at Big Boys? (and my concern at Dictum Ridge also)
If they have an event goin on there are some hardcore folks I dont wanna get caught up in that and make folks mad for having to wait or anything like that.
So far noone has first hand knowledge of Big Boys of the few emails I've sent out today.
I figure with Dictum, and what I've read on it only a few of us want to try it.
This might be a good 'end the Saturday Day Time portion', got the info on how far it is from the Dry River entrance and we can Jeep-pool over to it locking the Jeeps at the Air Down spot for the short hop to it. That way everyone can witness it. We currently have 12 signed up, but I know not everyone is going to want to tackle those rocks. But everyone will want to watch. Either that or they begin setting up Camp while a few of us attempt it. It's under a mile from the Dry River entrance.

We can call Big Boys and see what the deal is. It looks like one big mud hole with some trails.
Hey, I've got to back out. Something came up and I will be occupied that weekend. Have fun!

Jeb,
Make sure he has tow points and a full-size spare.
And a way to lift his rig.
Basically the standard rules.
