I bought it yesterday evening from 4wheelparts.com for 280 shipped. As soon as I get it I will do a write up on it. For all those who don't know me, this was my holy grail part, only to be bought when the jeep was complete. However, after watching Alex (jeepinsoldier) dunk his and proving that the snorkel was cheap insurance on the motor, I decided that it was going to have to be time now. Hooray me!! :D

You and me both buddy. The ONLY time I've shy'd away from an obstacle was because I didn't have one....game on.

That is really a decent price... Only 2 choices out there for the JK at the moment. ARB doesn't have one out yet, so far only AEV and RR, RR is expensive like $399..... A little much....AEV as a pre filter, looks like a Coleman Lantern but soon will have the other option of the Darth Vader look... Anyhow, pics when installed please....

well i cannot find any water crossing video's with my snorkle. when i had my tj and the day that i pulled out the blazer (see my intro thread) i was running water up to the top edge of my hood with no problems. some other things you may want to look into is relocating/raising all vent lines to help prevent sucking in water. another good thing to do is to possibly repack all bearings and seals with marine grade grease to prevent seapage. also attempt to waterproof all electrical componets and connections.

My vent hoses run up pretty high as it is. The front to the top of the radiator, and the rear to the top of the fuel fill up hose. I was contemplating raising them up higher, but need to evaluate the most logical locations. Last thing I want is hot gear oil spraying inside the tub. I do like your marine grade grease idea though. Any ideas where to start on that?

Congrats Korisu on the pending snorkel, give me a call and I'll come help out. The marine grade grease sounds like a great idea, what vent hoses need to be considered? I hadn't thought of them as I prep toward being able to ruin my carpet...

well the marine grade grease would most likely be purchased at a boating store or maybe even at tractor supply. as far as vent lines, the axles, trans, t-case, anything that has a vent line will need to be raised the deeper you want to go. dont forget your engine oil pan might need a little bit of extra gasket maker around the outside to help seal it up.

Has anyone tried building a snorkle from scratch? It seems to me the some PVC and an aftermarket aircleaner would do the trick. The hardest part (IMHO) would be to connect it to the carb.

korisu56
05-19-2008, 11:18
Thanks metalcd. I'll try to show this process as well when installing.

Erik719, building a snorkel from scratch is simple enough, as many have done it. The reason I chose to go with an aftermarket bought one is simple-aesthetics. The pvc snorkel is just as effective, but I've dreamed of having an ARB type snorkel since I bought my first jeep, and I think it looks a lot better. I was going to build my own last summer right after I hydro-locked, but then decided to go with something tried and true (best not tempt engine failure IMO)

I can't argue with you there. Some thing cobbled together out of bailing wire and duct tape ain't gonna be pretty.

In my first Jeep I had a big ammo can between the seats as a "console" must have cost me all of $20. Now I have a $300 tuffy center consolse...

Haha. sounds about right. For a long time i positioned my hi-lift so i could use it as an arm rest. I know all about that stuff.....defines the jeeps journey.

On the XJ I would have no problem with doing a PVC Pipe snorkel on it. It would fit its demeaner. On Georgia's YJ I would get an aftermarket one, as she cares what it looks like.
Next Jeep since it will be treated a little better would get an aftermarket as well.

Dude, all home-made mods look at home on the cow. I think pvc snorkel would be the shit there. *cough*WRITE-UP*ahem

Considering its on its last legs, I've been told just dont ruin the suspension components so you can put it on your next one. It might make for a good trial of a PVC.

My son keeps telling me, "You need a snorkel." I keep saying hmm, not sure. I know if I install one, we will probably deep six the TJ seeing if it works. It's one of those, " Build it, it will be tested." type moments. My son just installed a snorkel kit on his Kawasaki Brute Force 750 ATV. Yes, he then took it to deep water and tested it. It did work good though.

korisu56
05-20-2008, 09:50
Hell yeah I'm gonna test it. I'm going at least to the hood. I'll probably only be dumb with it once or twice, just so I know that should something happen I'll be good to go.

LOL! Good thing the rear locker was engaged. I turned toward the high side and jumped on the gas. If it was off, the power would have gone to the passenger side without traction and she would have sunk........

You need an 80mm hole drilled in the fender for the ARB. A 3 1/4 hole saw would work; however, I did mine with a jig saw. If using the jig saw, remove the front fender flare to get the saw around the hole.

If you go in deep water the snorkel is only one consideration. It is best to go with a electric fan with a manual cut off switch. Otherwise, the fan gets pulled forward by the water into the radiator and both lose.

korisu56
05-20-2008, 21:49
"and both lose."

That's the best way I've ever heard it put.

FNG here, I've been running an ARB snorkle on my TJ since 03, I extended all the vent lines to a small vacuum type canister under the hood, and then plumbed that into the air box to effectively raise my vent lines to snorkle height. I used the canister as a type of catch basin since I didn't want any tranny fluid sucked into the intake if the auto trans overheated, but after 5 years I've yet to find any evidence of fluid in that canister. However, your mileage may vary of course!

miljeep

Do you have a pic of the set up going into the airbox and also the vacuum type cannister? I would like to try to do this.

Miljeep, I searched my computer to see if I had any pic's here at work, but I guess I never took any of that mod. If it ever stops raining here I'll get some taken and posted. I used a vacuum reservoir from a F350 diesel. ( I'm a Ford Technician) and we had one on the parts shelf. F350's have an electric vacuum pump that mounts on the right inner fender that provides vacuum for the FWD and HVAC controls. It's a large canister and has some provisions for mounting moulded into it. I just used some barbed fittings and drilled and then epoxed it them into place and ran my extended lines into that. I also used clear tubing from the factory lines forward to the canister so I can monitor any moisture or fluid that makes it into the lines. My engine compartment is very "busy" (Kilby OBA, Kilby dual battery tray) so I mounted the canister over by the old ABS tray (no ABS on Rubicon) and ran a hose over to the Airbox from there. Again that was a hole drilled into the lowest portion of the airbox and a barbed fitting was threaded and then epoxied into place.
Hope this gives you some ideas...
Dave

Because your Jeep is an 03+ the hardest part is getting the duct from the snorkle to the airbox through the battry tray mount.

Pre 03 had large holes in both sides. 03+ has small holes that need to be enlarged. Trust me, take the fender apart and remove the battery tray mount, open up the holes and then finish the install. Its hell trying to enlarge the holes while the mount is still in the Jeep.

Cutting the hole in the fender for the snorkle is easy, just be careful measuring and using the template because once its cut the re is no going back.

The airbox has to be modified. seal all the mods on the airbox and where the duct connects at both the snorkle and the airbox with the RTV Black as well. Do the mods to the airbox first so that the RTV can 'set up for an hour or so before you start putting it all to gether.

ToBlave on Beltway did most of mine. Get a hold of him, he may help out - I think he loves putting them on. :)

Ugh...dunno if I want to tackle this by myself now. I'm a pretty impatient person (obviously) and would rather just wait until other heads are around so I don't make a stupid mistake. Bought the thing to protect my motor, not to screw it up during install. Oh well. Such is life.

All good advice, didn't read it all but browsed didn't see dielectric grease listed, not part of the snorkel but if your going to go test it, you will want your electrical connections water tight. Also when you connect the hoses, makes sure you put some silicone in there aswell. If your going to play in the water a lot, you may think about an electric fan that you can shut off. Your fan can get pushed into your radiator pretty easy.

korisu56
05-21-2008, 18:36
Tracking the fan issue, although I think I'm gonna stick with the stock one. While an electric one would be nice, if it fails I'm f'd. I have silicone ready to go, and am looking at relocating some other crucial bits (vent hoses). I'm not going to be u-boating with the wolfpack or anything, but can't hurt to be too safe I suppose.
