Crossing deep water....

I understand a snorkel keeps you from sucking water in and damaging cylinders etc.....but what is the next weak link in deep water fording that can be improved, waterproofed, etc? Anything else, other than the snorkel, that needs to be done to go windshield deep in water? So far I've avoided the deepest water and let other members of the club lead the way in the deep stuff...Seems like they get $1400 repair bills for water in tranny.....stuff like that! :( Have done some mudding,etc and up to 3 feet deep (top of my tires) crossings with no damage.

I believe axles are next on the list and maybe your computer depending on where it's mounted. Theres a guy over on jeepforum that plumbs his axles, tranny, distributor, etc. into his OBA so that it doesn't let water in when he's in deep water. Not sure how well it works but it's worth a try.

Yeah, there's a guy on here too that has run air lines from a compressor to his diffs and such to equalize pressure. Hopefully he can shed some light on it. Check out Fifthpro's water crossing guide. Maybe that's a good place to start. Look at trouble areas and troubleshoot from there....

Ok... (reminder: I'm brand new to all this.) So how deep can I go (approx.) in my Jeep before having to do these types of mods? Just below the distributer cap? Sorry for such a newb question, but I have to start somewhere right?

The bottom of your headlights should be your "back the f' up" indicator. As a guy that's hydrolocked before though, I wouldn't go in past your tire height if you wanna be safe.

Just get a good snorkel, Raise all your breathers, And I use dielectrics grease on all connections..

one thing i might have missed in the guide is don't turn off your motor if you exhaust manifold is under water and if it dies don't try to start it or you will suck water in the motor
