How urgent is the replacement of this part?? It's the ring gear on the front axle (D30) The picture makes it look like it's a huge chunk, but it's only the tooth that's broken and it's about half the tooth is gone.

I meant to ask on the phone...is there any cracks or anything else on the ring or did that one tooth take a dump?

Sorry but you need to tell your wife you need all new set. And you might as well put 5:13's in there if your going to do it. LOL
Honestly don't know.
But do know you need to see if you can fish out that missing chunk from it.

looks like either a scratch or a crack is coming off of it, I've got the drive shaft off, so in theory theirs not much stress on the parts.

I've already got 4.88's in it, and getting the chunk out was my #1 priority as soon as I saw that it was missing.

Unless you have money to drop in another ring and pinion and regear.....leave the shaft off and put it back on when we go wheeling. Just ride it till it snaps :D

That was my plan. Wheel it, then take the drive shaft off. But when that thing does finally have some sort of catostrophic failure, how F****ed will i be?

Very. The best thing to do is going to be to replace the whole thing. Since I do not know what you drive I assume that you have a 4 cylinder Wrangler of some sort that this is comming out of. My suggestion, until you get the money to fix the problem is to pull the drive shaft, and the carrier out and leave them out until you can get the money for a new set. Next take each of your axle shafts out and and just put the stub shaft back in. This will keep proper pressure on the unit bearing to keep it together... If you do not do this you may lose a wheel, happenned to one of my buddies. Big thing is to get this fixed. Normally when one tooth breaks there is a reason and it will get more than one. But I would air on the side of caution on this one.

It could just nuke the rest of the teeth...and it could grenade and render the diff useless if shrapnel gets into the wrong place. With a R&P...might not be the best idea to wheel it 'til you nuke it. My recommendation is to replace it BEFORE you wheel it again Bro.

Well, as long as you got all the metal out of it, then you could run it until you can either afford a new set, or it blows. If it blows, the easiest way to limp it home is not to drop the drive shaft, pull the carrier out and rip the ring gear off of it and throw it back in. No contact with the pinion and you keep the axles in it so you can leave the fluid in it for the bearings on the way home.
