Having grown up with Zak Kolda, he was the perfect balance between hell-child and role-model. Loved to have fun, go offroading, anything mildly dangerous. He was killed in Al Anbar Province, Iraq by a suicide vehicle-borne IED on December 1st, 2004. It was his sacrifice that ultimately convinced me to join the United States Marine Corps in 2006, I was going to prove that when one Marine falls, 2 take his place. I actually had the same exact job as he did during my deployment 4 years later, lead vehicle commander (though I was only a Lance). A week ago the Corpus Christi Independent School District unanimously voted that a newly-built Elementary School be named in Honor of the Fallen native in a decision between the 23 year old War Hero and six other Nominees. I am so very proud to have known Zak and I share his story with those who will listen in the hope his Legacy will live on.
