Never done this before, I just went and kind of got the stuff I thought I needed.

I got a Herculiner Kit that had a gallon of the stuff plus some rollers and then I got an extra quart just incase. I also got Acetone and some steel wool stuff and sand paper.

I hope to Herculine my tub the weekend that the welding is done, so I am going to start removing stuff from the inside of the jeep this weekend to start on some of the prep work.

When the weekend of the welding party rolls around, I will have everything removed, the inside prepped and just waiting to have the bolts welded to hold the little cage I made for the back, before applying the Herculiner.

I have an Unlimited, so it will be interesting to see if that is enough to do a good job. I also have the floor mounts for the sport cage which are bolted to the frame mounts through the drain holes which are going to be a pain. I RTV'd the heck out of that area of the jeep to keep the water out. Now I am going to have to go in and try to get all that RTV out.....unless I can just Herculine over it :)

If I recall right, you need Xylene for clean-up/thinning. It's not bad to do, prep is the key.

Wear clothes you can throw away, or don't care about, the stuff is messy! (it's also hard to get off the garage floor:mad:)

Get a box of latex or nitrile gloves. (I used armpit length gloves, used for dressing out big game, worked great!)

With one gallon, I did the interior of my CJ tub, both flat fenders (inside and out) and my rear bumper, so with a gallon and extra quart, you should be good.

That's the same as Acetone right? That's what I used

I think I read in the instruction that you use Xylene for thinning and the Acetone or Xylene for help in prepping the area.

I am going to start sanding this weekend and then by next weekend, I should only have to sand under and right around where the drivers seat is.

Cannot see the photos at work, but did you use one coat or two in the tub? I hope to hit it with two as recommended in the instructions.

I hope you're ready for the smell that comes with it for a bit.

How much was it?

miljeep

It was 89 a gallon, plus you get the military discount and there was an ad hanging in the store that said a mfr rebate drops it to 69, but even though the paper was in the store, I cannot find that rebate form online.

You have to get the rebate form from Pep Boys. Usually they are pretty good about honoring them even if they are slow to do so. Also typically you can get rebate on up to 2 of the same item.

They gave me their form with all the rebates listed on it, but I did not see anything for the Herculiner listed on either side of it. Maybe if the cashier could speak English, I could have got some more information out of her about the rebate.

Quizá si usted habló Español, habría sido bastante fácil de conseguir la información demasiado Ryan. ¡Usted sabe que Chicos de Energía no son para usted tipos blancos!!!:D:beer: LOL

(Maybe if you spoke Spanish, it would have been pretty easy to get the info too Ryan. You know that Pep Boys is not for you white guys!!!)

(Just for the record...I don't speak Spanish and non-English speaking cashiers irritates the hell out of me too!!!)

2 coats. You definately want two coats. Good prep and follow the 'de-structions' and you should be good. And yep, I used acetone for wiping down the 'scuffing' for prep. (forgot about that:D)

it is all in the prep.....removing stuff you dont want to herculine, taping stuff you dont want to herculine, scuffing and wiping down with the xylene. then let the first coat cure then put on the second. it is a good all day project with breaks in the middle.

That's why I plan on doing it on this day (http://www.militaryjeepers.com/community/showthread.php?t=1699). I should have everything taken out and the jeep prepped to be able to just spend the day lining the tub.

As everyone has said, it's all about the prep time. Take your time and do it right and you'll be happy with the result. Use foam ear plugs to protect all the bolt holes. You do not want any Herculiner in the threads! I'd also go to Michaels (or any craft store) and get some of those round paint brushes they use for stencils or stucco. Get one about 2 inches in diameter and use it instead of the 2-in flat paint brush that comes in the kit since you're going to be dabbing the stuff on as opposed to brushing it on. I also picked up a "cut-in" paint cup from Home Depot so I could carry a small amount of the Herculiner with me as I did all the brush work prior to the rollers.

Have fun!

If you have access to an air compressor, shoot it on instead of using the roller. It's about 5x faster and lays it on more uniformly. I use a "textured spray gun" from Harbor Freight that cost me about $20. You can also shoot it thru an "Undercoating Gun".. I forget what they're called.

Xylene is what they recommend for prep and cleanup. Xylene is a good "slow evaporation" degreaser. I use it all the time for cleaning roll cage tubing. It stays on the rag a long time before evaporating.. unlike Acetone or Lacquer Thinner. You can pick up Xylene at Lowe's under the brand name "Xylol".

No access to an air compressor, but that would have been nice.
