View Full Version : Just a few things being added to the Jeep
There's been a lot of interest in the customization of my Jeep, and while I have a few "build" threads on other forums (the WFTW forum, a Hummer forum :D , the Expo forum, and a JK-only forum), I thought I would post one here so that those of you who'd like to read about could do so without going to a different forum.
This may give you some ideas on what you'd like to do with your Jeep or which parts to buy. Unfortunately I'm in Iraq at the moment, so I won't be able to answer specific questions about how many MPG I'm getting with my set-up or other such things. However, I can tell you why I chose a specific make/model of part. I will be back in the States in 2 weeks and will be able to answer those types of questions as well as provide you with more pictures.
Thus far, here's a short list of what's being added to my black 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon...

I'm probably forgetting something, but you get the idea. There might be a slight change here and there, such as the rear drive shaft, but all of the items listed have already been obtained and therefore changes are not anticipated at this time.
Here are a few pictures of the vehicle when I first bought it while on a 2 week vacation back in Florida at the end of December/start of January.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/Jeep2.jpg
The first thing to do was to strip the interior of the Jeep and have Line-X applied. This is important due to me removing the Jeep's doors throughout the Wheelers for the Wounded program, which will last half a year.
Here's the vehicle after it was gutted...

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/0820JEEP20003.jpg
And here's a few pictures after the Line-X was applied. I'll get more when I go home in a few weeks.
Between the seat and door.

The tailgate.

My Dad, who was keeping the Jeep for me until it was time to turn it over to the customization shop doing most of the work, loves working on vehicles. With so many parts arriving at his house turning his garage into what my Mom described as a "chop shop", he decided to install a few parts himself.
So, here are some pictures of the Tuffy items I chose. These were important due to the doors being removed for the trip. A little extra security is always a good idea.
The glove box.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/TuffyGloveBox1.jpg
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/TuffyGloveBox2.jpg
The center console. Tuffy has just come out with a full console for the JK, and I'm considering getting that.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/TuffyCenterConsole1.jpg
The trunk. I also have the insert that goes into this, but it's not pictured.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/TuffyTrunk1.jpg
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/TuffyTrunk2.jpg
Wheels were a concern. Obviously I wanted bead locked wheels, but they are somewhat of a pain to maintain. After much deliberation, I chose 17" I.C.E. wheels by Center Line.
Each wheel has 3 parts and an internal bead lock system that does not need to be fussed with after installation (in other words, no torque wrench needed to constantly check them). They are also run-flats, which I think is really cool. They're good for 20 miles off-road with 0 psi and 30 miles off-road with 0 psi.
I'm no fan of chrome and was going have them powder coated black, but the more I look at these, the more I like them the way they are.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/ICEWheels.jpg
The next piece of business was installing the 4" TeraFlex lift kit with 8 adjustable control arms. To clear 40" tires, TeraFlex is sending me 6" springs. Those springs are currently in production, but I'll have them sometime by the end of June. Until then, they are sending me 1 1/2" spaces to get me by.
You will see some rust in the pictures. This is a result of parking the vehicle at Jacksonville Beach, Florida. The salt in the air is horrible there.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/Build1.jpg
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/Build4.jpg
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/Build3.jpg
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/Build6.jpg
It's no secret that the 3.8L engine in the JK isn't the best in the world. To help with this, I chose a Magnaflow exhaust.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/Build2.jpg
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/Build5.jpg
With all the off-road lights I'll be running...not to mention a computer, refridgerator/freezer, winch, and other do-dads, I thought a dual battery set-up would be a good idea.
One Optima battery has been installed and another one will be installed when it arrives next week.

That is awesome
Which part? ;) I'm glad you like it. :D
It has taken 5 months to get everything needed for the build and there still a few things left to obtain. By my estimate, it should be completed by mid-October. I say that because I'm hoping to have it done in time for the SEMA show in Las Vegas, which is in early November.

USMCHarleyJeepGuy...thanks. I'm really looking forward to getting back there. I can imagine how many pictures I'll be taking of my Jeep when I get back...will probably fill up the memory card on my camera multipule times. hahahaha :D
miljeep...yeah, it's a little much. I'm thinking of taking off the "Rubicon" stickers and naming it something else. Afterall, it's not really a Rubicon any longer. Who knows...maybe I'll have a "Name The Jeep" contest. :D

Looks good though. You must be excited to see that thing when you get back home. Good luck man, I will be in Florida near Patrick Air Force Base the week following the 12th of June. If you need anything from the DC area, I can at least get it as far as Florida around the Cocoa Beach area.

Getting to meet a lot of our wounded service members and be able to show them a good time for a weekend is going to be awesome! Working hard on the program has really made my time here in Iraq much easier as well...provides me with a way to focus the little free time I have and my energy towards something positive.

There's a few women I dated when I was stationed in Ft. Myers who I wouldn't mind seeing again if you'd like to bring them. hahahah :D
June 11th is the day I get back to FL. There's a charity event in Jacksonville on June 15th, then I'm heading to south FL to visit some friends in Naples for 4 or 5 days, then there's another charity event in Ocala June 21-22. Although I'll be busy while back there, I think it's all going to be a lot of fun...certainly a nice break from the sand box.
I just hope all the parts arrive in time...still waiting on the axles, new hard top, roof rack, roof top tent, and seats. It's going to be cutting it close, but I'm keeping my finger's crossed.
Looks like an awesome project that you have going there....Stay safe in the sandbox....Can you PM me some info on the Wounded Warrior project when you get time?

The Wounded Warrior Project is a different program. The WWP is raising money for wounded service members by auctioning off a new Jeep JK. The vehicle has been highly modified and its estimated worth is approximately $80,000. You can purchase raffle tickets for $25 each. I've bought a few of the ticket and am expecting to win when they have the drawing in November, but you're more than welcome to buy a few tickets as well if you like. ;) :p
The WFTW program is one that will actually take wounded service members off-roading and camping for a weekend. I have teamed up with an organization called Disabled Explorers. DE is run by a guy named Lance, who lost his leg many years ago. He outfits off-road capable vehicle for those who do not have the use of their legs so that they can drive using hand controls. He also researches products that make outdoor life easier for those with disabilities. DE will be hosting the Arizona portion of the WFTW program, yet his information will be available to people at all the events around the country.
U.S. Veterans Matter, a non-profit organization, is covering the WFTW program. That means any donations to the WFTW program is tax deductible. U.S. Veterans Matter is run by a great woman named Lorrayne and she is very excited about the program. She is going to be helping out the NJ and VA events by providing entertainment from top country singers whom she's in contact with and has worked with before. She is also working on busing wounded military members from Walter Reed Army Medical Center to the NJ and VA events...complete with police escort and possibly from the Patriot Riders as well (motorcylce group on Harleys). She has done this before, so I feel she is going to be able to do so again. Oh, and she will be bringing the 9/11 flag to the events as well.
The WFTW was conceived when a Marine who was assigned to my team here in Fallujah lost both his legs to an IED. My plan was to get back to the States and take a 2 month vacation traveling around the country. Along the way, I wanted to stop by my friend's place and take him off-roading and camping for a weekend. I figured that I could let him drive my Jeep off-road with the help of his prosthetics to help show him there's nothing he still can't do.
When others found out about this, they wanted to come along. Word spread throughout the off-road community and it was suggested I do the same thing for other wounded service members around the country. The program has since grown into its current size...a half year program with an event every weekend all around the country.

37" BFGoodrich KM2 tires mounted on 17" Center Line bead locked wheels. These took me a while to install, but it was cool that I was able to do it myself rather than taking them to a tire shop. Best of all, these bead locks don't have to be constantly checked like others. The tires will be replaced with 40" KM2's in a few weeks.

Thanks for the compliments...glad you all like the JK. Due to it being the flag vehicle for the Wheelers for the Wounded program, it not only is capable off-road, but that it looks good too.
No, I haven't had any issues with the dual battery set-up...has worked like a charm.
Sorry that it's been a while between updates...was crazy busy visiting family and working on the Jeep, but am now back in Iraq now and can concentrate on the program once again.
Here are some updated pictures...
Got the front and rear drive shafts installed...
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/IMG_0862.jpg
Installed the hood lift kit. This thing is GREAT...especially if your Jeep is lifted...
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/IMG_0859.jpg
Did a little flex test...no RTI ramp, but the stairs worked pretty well...
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/89.jpg
Installed the roof rack and roof top tent...
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/86.png
Of course, I had to take it to Hooters to see what the women thought of it...it got their approval...
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/IMG_1072.jpg
Testing the durability of the new Xenon fender flares...things held up beautifully!
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/wftwjk3.png
I hated having the doors on the vehicle, so I took the front ones off. I would have taken the rear ones off, but I had the refrigerator back there and it hasn't been bolted in yet...didn't want to take a hard turn and have that fall out. BTW...the fridge is AWESOME...had ice cold beer regularly and no problems with it draining my battery.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i51/jasonsgu/94.jpg
And here are some 4th of July poser shots...

Well, I hope you all enjoyed the last two posts of pictures. There's still a LOT left to do to the Jeep, so by no means is it finished.
First, the roof top tent and roof rack have been sold. While it worked nice in Florida, I don't think it will last the half a year trip around the States next year. I'll be doing a lot of rock crawling and don't really need that weight up top. Plus, when (I mean, if) I roll the Jeep, I would hate for my "home" to be crushed.
So, I've opted to get a trailer. I'm currently in negotiations with a company to have one custom built and it's going to be AWESOME. I'm talking air conditioning, bed, electric outlets, 12v outlet, skid plates, the works. I'll keep you all up to speed on that as it takes shape.
Also, the Jeep is underpowered and something had to be done about that. So, while I was back in the States I purchased a 5.7L V8 Hemi. I picked up a tranny as well. I still have to get a mess of other things for the engine swap, but they will be bought soon.
The Jeep is going to get an exo-cage as well...should look very cool. Fox shocks are on the way as well. I already put in a Fox steering stabilizer.
And finally, the 40" BFG KM2 tires arrived the day after I left (typical). Those will be put on as well and I'm going to try to use the 37" KM2's on the trailer that's being built. The trailer will also have the same wheels that are on the Jeep, so it will look really good.
So, to recap, the only major things left to do are the engine swap, exo-cage, and trailer. The rest are all minor little things. The engine swap and cage should both be completed by October. I'll then return to the States for another vacation and enter it into a few shows to help promote the program.
Oh...and I'm getting an AEV heat reduction hood too...almost forgot about that. It's being custom painted by COP4x4 with the program's logo.
That should about do it for now. If you have any questions, fire away. Otherwise, I hope you all enjoyed the pictures and I'll post up some more as the work is done.
Looks awesome man.
Thanks...and thanks for listing the information in the MJ newsletter. :D

Great job on the JK. And thank you for the service you will provide our Brothers. Yet something else that makes me start to tear up. My household6 thinks I am funny that way, but certain things just touch me that way. And this is one of them.
really sweet build, but I gotta ask.... Where is your spare?!?!?!?
Hey all...sorry for the absence...I returned from Iraq, wanted a change of pace, so took off and moved to Alaska for the winter. Unfortunately the internet here isn't readily accessible, so that has prevented me from getting on-line as much as I'd like. Fortunately I'll have an internet line installed in my place the day after Christmas.
The Jeep has come along nicely. There are still a few things to do (wire up all the lights, install the four Mastercraft bucket seats, etc, but it will be completed prior to the start of the WFTW program in April.
One major change is the Hemi will no longer be installed in the Jeep. We've tried to get it prepped and done, but there just isn't enough time. An engine swap is a serious undertaking and not something we want to rush. So, I'll sell the 5.7L Hemi and transmission, along with the headers, computer and wiring harness. Even without the Hemi, it's still one badass Jeep! :D
Something you all might be interested in knowing is that the Jeep and trailer will be raffled off with the proceeds going to a military based charity (most likely the Fisher House, but I'm still researching that). Tickets will be $25 each and the winner will be chosen at the final event (in Georgia, the last weekend of September).
Other than that, I hope you all are having a nice holiday season.
Oh, Lt. Dan, the spare tire will be put on the trailer I'll be towing behind the Jeep. A 40" tire is pretty big and I'd like to be able to see out my rear window.

Giggitty ... Dude that is one crucial Jeep. I just read the whole thread and had to get a box of kleenex. I am seriously impressed.
myothertankisajeep...The GA event will most likely be held at River Rock. The club hosting the event is based out of FL (Matanzas Jeep Club) but they've been up to River Rock quite a bit. Hope you're enjoying Benning...I went to PLDC there back in 1991 and again in 2007 to get by equipment, shots, etc before going to Iraq.
Ghost00TJ...The WFTW events are all on weekends and I'll be attending all of those...so I don't think I'll be making it to any of the Jeep Jamborees. Although, I did try to find the '09 schedule for those a few months ago to see if I might be close to some, but couldn't find any info on next years schedule.
Glad you all like the Jeep. It's going to be fun to turn the keys to that beast over to a lucky winner in September. Can't wait to see their face. :D

wow dude that is one sick jeep. i mean i have a new respect for JKs. haha. when is the final even gonna be? i'd like to be able to make it out to it if possible. im not far from River Rock.
afjeep...the final event is the last weekend of September. It's being hosted by the Matanzas Jeep Club. The President of that club is in the military himself. If you'd like to assist with the event, you can email him at matanzasjeepclub@yahoo.com. His name is Clarence. Since you're at Benning, I'm sure he'd like to see about getting in touch with someone from the WTT there. Thanks!
Oh...the Jeep and trailer are both being raffled off. Tickets are $25 each and proceeds are going to a military based charity. I've completed the paperwork for the Fisher House and am awaiting an answer from them. Provided everything goes as planned, they will be the beneficiary of the funds raised. The Fisher House does quite a bit for military families and is very deserving of this! The Jeep and trailer are valued at about $75,000...so a $25 raffle ticket is a good deal. :D I hope you all will purchase one (or some) and encourage your family and friends to do so as well. It's a small amount that can go a long ways towards helping out our military families.
The raffle tickets may be purchased through the event host clubs or through the WFTW website (link below). Just read the few rules and then click the "Donate" button.

I am almost 100% sure that madmax79 is from the matanzas jeep club. You can send him a pm here (http://www.militaryjeepers.com/community/private.php?do=newpm&u=43).

So, do you have any money left over for gas? That's awesome any ways.
As long as gas prices don't shoot up to $4 a gallon, I should be alright. :)

Just out of curiosity, how is this build funded? It's a seriously ridiculously impressive rig, and I can't wait for my neighbors to see it in my driveway.
Of course, when I win, I'll have to move to a state that allows Jeeps off-road ... I wonder if my wife could get a job in Utah?
40 inch tires. I think that is half an inch taller than Rob's tires. If I won this I would drive it up to Mountain Valley Customs and park next to Rob's rig and snap a photo to post here.

The program has been funded by me personally. I bought the Jeep in January '08 while on vacation from Iraq. I then turned it over to Brad Wilkins of Overbuilt Customs of Jacksonville, Florida ( www.overbuiltcustoms.com ) and began buying parts to be installed.
I have some sponsors which have provided me with various parts for the vehicle "at cost" rather than having to pay retail. Don't let that fool you though...I've spent an enormous amount of money on the build of this Jeep...Jeep - $30,000, D60's - $13,000, Hard Top - $3,500, Wheels - $4,500...you get the idea.
For the trailer, I purchased the wheels, tires, A/C unit, generator, and a few other things. The rest of that is being built and donated by Outlander Trailers. The trailer is valued around $13,000 - $15,000. It is custom and will be one of a kind. How many rigs out there do you think are towing a trailer on matching bead locked wheels and 40" tires?
On top of the build of the Jeep, you also have to factor in that my life is on hold at the moment. I came back from Iraq and couldn't get a "real" job because I'll be leaving in 3 months to begin the program. So, I moved to Alaska to get a seasonal job until mid-March, when I'll then return to Florida.
During the 6 months of the program I will basically be "out of work." I'll be traveling around the country on my own dime. I will camp the entire time to help save money. I expect to pay roughly $3,000 in campsite fees during that time and $4,000 in gas. That's not even counting things like food and supplies.
The money raised through the raffle of the Jeep will go to a military based charity. That is why I've made a page on the WFTW forum listing EVERY raffle ticket sold. I want everyone to know exactly what I'm doing. Unlike other raffles where money would be kept by an organization, the WFTW organization will not be doing that. I am not "paying" myself a salary for doing this so that the maximum amount of money possible will go towards the charity. I will add up the number of tickets sold, multiply that by $25, subtract the PayPal fees, subtract a portion of the cost of the vehicle, and the rest goes to the charity.
Some think I'm crazy for not paying myself a salary, using the money for gas and other expenses, etc. But, I wouldn't feel right about that. Our military families need that money more than me. If I end up scraping by and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for half a year, then so be it. We've all made sacrifices...this will just be one more.
