Anybody dealt with an issue for an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD aka OPD)? My Jeep has sat for almost a year now. I've taken it to an inspection and it has been running a few times to move it in and out of the garage. The computer would not even register the Jeep OBD. I'm wondering if the Jeep just needs to run for a little while. Any help would be appreciated.
Monday:beer: time.

What do you mean it wouldn't register OBDII? Like it wouldn't connect?

It should power up as soon as it is connected and you turn the key to the on (NOT START) position.

right. I'm not turning the engine over and I have the computer reader. I could remove the check engine light which was on but I cannot erase any other field diagnostic readings. The computer I'm using gives a reading of "Linking Error" after a few minutes.

Try a different computer (or try the computer on a different vehicle)...might be as simple as a bad cable to the diagnostic computer.

Try your computer on another vehicle and see if you get the same result. We had a customer car in here that was doing the same thing and the OBDII port under the dash had broken pins inside of it. Look at your OBDII connector really close. Try putting some Dielectric grease on the scanner plug before you connect it to help clean out dirt.

yeah, I'm going to give that a shot. I've cleaned the hell out of the port. got quite a lot of funky corroded crap out. pins all seem to be fine. the Jeep has been setting for almost a year. but neither the scanner, nor the computer at the inspection station would read the computer at all. I'm just praying that the computer is alright.
thanks guys.

The computer shouldn't go bad from sitting. It is possible that the comp. did loose programming from sitting so long. Try driving for a 100 miles or so and re-read the computer. If it did loose the programming this should be enough mileage to reset it. Removing the check engine light will do you no good. If you inspection is like our here in Nv. then their computer will read a fault in the ODBII. I go through this here with a fleet of over used cars where I work. I don't know how many smog tests I have had to redo because my maint. guys didn't check that damn little light.

au contraire! My '95's computer went VERY bad just from sitting. I tossed in a working condition '92 PCM and everything works perfectly. It used to take me upwards of 30-45 minutes on the average to start the jeep.
Try someone else's PCM.

sweet. thanks for the advice man. I'll take her out tonight and rack up some miles then. probably wouldn't hurt to get the old gas out anyway. only thing that sucks is that the registration is expired obviously if its been sitting for so long. and its out of state. thanks guys.

I would be concerned about the computer MORE if the performance was anything but freakin stellar. but it runs great. sounds great. smells great. meaning the gas. not like some retarded febreeze commercial.

Well said. I unfortunately work for a bunch of frogs, they are all a bunch of elitest bas%@rds. Enough of that. I guess I should of phrased that as I have never known one to go bad because of sitting.
If you clear codes, It erases all readyness test. Your jeep will have to set the test as pass or fail before you get the light to come on. How many times have you cleared codes from it??? And a year make and model will help too! Try flashing the computer... heres how. disconnect the pos cable from battery, cut the headlight switch to on and leave it on, touch the pos cable to the neg for thirty sec. cut switch for the headlights off. Reconnect the battery. start jeep. should be good to go. It will take 12 to 14 key cycles to set moniters back. (key cycles are from cold engine to warm up to operating temp to back to cold)

The only thing wrong with my jeep when the computer went bad was that it wouldn't start for 30-45 minutes, and eventually stopped running when it altogether died.

Linking problem sounds like a "link problem" just as said above a bad cable or in your case the underlined portion above, I think your diagnostic port is jacked up I would disconnect it from the bottom of the dash and get some aerosol spray Electrical Contact Cleaner and really get in there from all sides.
good luck

I neither speak french, nor care for any... so, I suppose I should just delete that phrase from my dictionary

02TJ: I'm reading this imagining myself on some freaking asteroid, trying to hot-wire some nuclear payload to save the damn planet, haha. she's a 97 Wrangler Sport. I'm almost beaten to the point of taking it to a shop. most things I can handle myself...but this is out of my span. very depressing. I conduct a diagnostic test through the ignition and the code read-outs from the odometer say that everything is fine. when I hook the scanner to the OBD, that's when the bastard chokes. tried it on the wife's car and it worked fine (granted its an 08). I'll take your advice 02TJ. thanks guys. kill.
