Hello all,
Anyone know how to remove the key barrel from full steel doors? I can get through the removal of the door panel just fine, but once I get there I'm not sure how to actually get the key barrel out of the door.
I think I need the thing re-keyed. Is removing it the only way to do that?
I'm thinking it depends on the year of the vehicle. i know on some model vehicles you have to have the key in the cylinder in order to remove it. of course my YJ half doors didn't have any locks...
I'd suggest a Haynes or Chiltons manual. I can't think of any other good answer, even a search on the intarweb didn't produce crap.

If you are talking about a TJ, then I might be able to help. Once you have the inner door panel removed, look inside the door. You should see a metal rod attached to the back of the lock cylinder. There is a small plastic clip that holds that rod into the cylinder. Rotate the plastic clip carefully 90 degrees and then remove the lock rod. Once you do that, you should see a spring steel clip, roughly U shaped, pushed into place around the lock cylinder. Push/pull that clip (depending on which direction it was popped on at the factory) and then remove the cylinder. Installation is the same as removal.
If you are asking about locks on a YJ, I have no idea since I've never pulled a YJ door apart.

crazy4ink,
Yes, I neglected to say that the rig in question is a TJ. I participate on JeepForums.com and always post in the TJ forums over there. Sometimes I forget that I'm not posting in a TJ-only forum here on MilitaryJeepers.com.
I do remember seeing that spring-type circlip thingy. I was hesitant to start pulling on fragile looking pieces of equipment in the door panel as I don't have a clue when it comes to locks. I actually did disengage the rod as you described, so I guess the next step isn't much harder.
You're talking about the spring/clip that's nearest the door panel side of the door, right? There isn't another one towards the exterior side of the door is there? After I pop off the spring, the barrel should just slide right out? I'll give it a try this week and see what happens.
Thanks again crazy4ink.

the U-shaped spring steel clip I was talking about should be right by the inside of your exterior panel.
No worries man, was just trying to help.

Thanks man. I think I know what you're talking about. I'll give it a try again here sometime this week when I get free time.
