View Full Version : Uwharrie tips?
I have never been to Uwharrie and am considering a trip out there on an upcoming day off to see what is available there. Anyone have any tips or advice? Also wondering if anyone can recommend some decent and easily accessible tent camping areas.

First thing once you get there, about a half mile past the park entrance there's a gas station called the outpost. Stop in there to get a feel for what they have to offer, they've got a lot of useful stuff, most importantly get a trail pass, $5 a day or $35 yearly. They'll also have free trail maps and more detailed topo's for purchase. As far as camping, you've got a few options. Arrowhead and Badin Lake are established campgrounds, both are about $12 a night and have tables, lantern hangers, tent pads, water spigots nearby, showers and bathrooms. Some sites at Badin lake cg butt right up to Badin lake so if you have a boat you don't have to use the boat ramp everyday. You can also camp for free off of any trail or gravel road (except where signs say no), there are many fire rings you can see as you drive around. But I wouldn't recommend it unless you've got at least a small group (you've seen Deliverance right?). As for the trails, you'll be able to do everything, for most obstacles there's a bypass or an easy line. The exception is Daniel, that's the only place I've had to pull cable, but it changes all the time.

What'd you decide on Jesse?
Your first time out just hook up and tag along with some other guys out there I'm sure they won't mind. You could even mention it at the outpost or the campgrounds its your first time I'm sure someone will help you out. If not don't sweat it dude just start of on the easy trail which you can then turn onto the moderate trails and so on. I always recommend starting off on the easy trail then one stage up from there in new places that will give you a feeling of that places rating system and help you judge what you can and cannot run.

My advice for URE........try not to break nuttin! LOL Seriously, I've only been once but Rubi hit pretty much everything I'd have said.
Does anyone know if they allow you to have a concealed firearm on the trails or in the camps?

Probably, there's a shooting range but I've never seen it open, you may have to contact someone to supervise or something.

I had one when I went, but that's not saying it's ALLOWED. Remember, the very first word is CONCEALED Carry............

I figured you would respond to this topic!

I camped out there by myself before, no problems. There are a couple of great spots down the main gravel road coming back from the outpost. Make sure you get a map from the outpost also.
Firearms: unsure about the weapons there, but as long as they are not prohibited you are pretty free with them. In NC you can OPEN CARRY almost everywhere in the state without a permit.
The only thing I know that is prohibited is alcohol.

the range is three dollars a day. and i think you can have a .22 cal at anytime with a permit.
People who legally possess firearms under federal and state law can now possess those firearms in the national parks in that state. National parks should not be confused with national forests. National parks are under the U.S. Department of Interior, while national forests are under the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
National forests in North Carolina, such as Nantahala, Pisgah, Uwharrie and Croatan, are designated as game lands and all state game-land regulations apply. [/QUOTE]

Concealed carry permits do not supersede the other regulations that apply,” said Maj. Keith Templeton, with the Law Enforcement Division of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. “It is up to the individual with a valid concealed carry permit to know the law and obey it.”
Under game land regulations, it is unlawful to possess a firearm or bow and arrow on a game land at any time, except:
During the open hunting seasons for game birds and game animals
When the firearm is cased or not immediately available for use
When possessed and used by participants in field trials on field trial areas
When possessed and used on target shooting areas designated by the landowner
When possessed in designated camping areas for defense of persons and property
Game land regulations allow .22 caliber pistols, with barrels not greater than seven and a half inches in length and shooting only short, long or long rifle ammunition, to be carried as a sidearm on game lands at any time, other than by hunters during the special bow and arrow and muzzleloading deer hunting seasons. hope this helped, to be sure contact Forestry .

Just got back from uwharrie this morning. All trails are open and a blast. The shooting range is closed until further notice with no explenation. There is a permanent closed sign with a poc on it, when I called they gave no reason or estimated time to reopen
