is there a cheap way to fix the speed-o for larger tires or do i have to spend a few hundred on a calibration tool?
I think you "just" need to install the correct speedo gear to the correct tooth count for the tire size...?

Yep...all you have to do is check the chart and match your gearing and tire size...follow the link to buy one...5 minute install.
the above is all correct, however, measure true tire height when figuring gear not the size stamped on the tire.

yep, 1/2" wrench and 5 mins and you're good to go. I have better luck getting the speedo gear from my local Jeep dealership. Because of us, they keep them in stock now.

if its an 06 then a spedo gear will NOT work for you.. you need something like the true speed by superlift.

I am not saying you are wrong; but according to Quardatec, the dealer and the factory service manual, the new gear will do it. (Hit the link at my first post at the top of the page.) If they are all wrong, please let me know (and if that is the case that they are all wrong, sorry for the bum scoop).

Jeep Wranglers and Rubicons both get their speed readings sent to the computer from senders in the transfer case. The Rubicons transfer case is different from the Wranglers, as it uses an electronic sender. When you get bigger tires for your Jeep Rubicon, you have to have the on board computer reprogrammed to hold a different set of variables with which to calculate speed.
If you have any other model of Jeep Wrangler, SE, X, Sahara, or Sport, then you have the NP231J, and it uses a highly sophisticated scientific system which is very complex with which to calculate your speed: A little plastic gear on a stick.
When NP231J owners buy bigger tires, they can simply buy a new speedometer gear, install it in the transfer case in under 30 minutes, and their automatic transmission and speed readouts will be corrected. That's all that is necessary. This applies to all Non-Rubicon models up to and including 2006.
If I am indeed wrong, please let me know. I just double checked and referenced JeepUS41.org, JeepForum, JP magazine and the service manual. I think I may have this one right.
