A load of goodness showed up from Poly Performance. Tuffy, and Superchips made one yesterday.
Just waiting on River Raider and SWAG Offroad.....
Getting a little ansy now. I found someone with a lift and a welding machine. Some cold beer and cash will secure a weekend for the work.
Wow, I am looking forward to the final product. I thought your jeep looked good when I saw it at Marble Falls a while ago.

I saw you are sleeving your front axle. Not a bad idea but I would go another direction based upon your build list. Go with the Dyantrac housing and use your D44 Rubicon innards (if you have a Rubicon).
I do see some 'beauty queen' in your build and thats good, that said you might want to consider the Rock Crawling Domes to add to your Walker Evans BL (I am assuming they are real BLs not the WE street locks) Here are some tips on dealing with Bead Locks and how to torque them down and the OMF Rock Crawling Domes: http://www.savagesun4x4.com/enter/how_to_stuff/beadlock_wheels_tips_to_ins.html

NICE! My favorite part is the windshield graphics. Not that it isn't a SWEEEET Jeep, I'm just all about the Molon Labe. (by the way, how did you get it written like that under your screen name??)

Great build! Looks like you were one of the lucky ones able to start off with a half door JK. I cannot understand why the make so few of them....

Thanks guys, still waiting on a few more parts. I have secured a plasma cutter for a weekend!
Savage, I ma going to swap to a high pinion 60. The D30 is trussed, gusseted and has chromoly axles. Would have added the outer sleeves but the truss is already in the way. The inner sleeves should keep it together for a while until I make the swap. I was dead set on the OMFs with black rock domes on every other until I found a guy local that makes custom rings... now my problem is deciding on what I want... I need to get on it so they can get started. They will be CNC'ed with whatever I want and still come in cheaper than the OMF setup. He cuts them and sends them off for anodizing (if not just some spray paint) and they are machined.
Govt - just copy it and then go to your profile and paste it in. I found it somewhere deep inside the itrawebz.... Μολὼν λάβε - I am thinking about swapping it out for one that more closely matches the one on the monument at Thermopylae - ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
JeepinS - I started off with full doors and found someone coughsuckercough who wanted to trade. I love them!
I had to take a peak at the shocks....
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Mobile%20Uploads/2010-10-09011939.jpg
Installed the Superchips and it is nice to have the speedo match, no more annoying TPMS chime, the shift points are back where they should be after 5.13s... the added ponies are a bonus IMO. It drives like it should now.
I forgot to order a fuel door for the RROR corners, have one of those on the way from QTech.... went ahead and upgraded the xfer/shifter/ebreak handles to the new Drake Offroad aluminum handles.
Will start tearing out the interior for the bedliner shoot, next week hopefully. The Iggies should show up this week, will install those while the seats are out.

I like the rock domes, don't know about having them colored tho. Lots of factors come into play here but for my builds and my customers they end up going rattle can, semi gloss black, $12 bucks at Wally World. This has more to do with intended intensity of use + difficulity of trails beyond the 4+++ level.
If you go for the best then go Dynatrac ProRock High Pinion D60. I am a dealer for Dynatrac and I sell them at my cost. I am moving my shop down to Texas next year, most likely longer than you care to wait. If you get over to Boerne give me a shout out...

I am a rattle canning fool!!! Three coats of black followed by a coat of that "hammered" look black turns out good and is simple. I'm just not much on chrome.
Some SWAG showed up today along with some new Currie tone rings for the rear chromie shafts:

just my .02 but dont use the braded arb hose. if/when you catch that on anything it will rip the fitting out of the diff instead of just breaking the plastic hose.
Mr.RonGilbert
10-13-2010, 16:55
That is a good point, I have already trashed one nylon hose... I might just run it through some of that wire loom protector stuff to keep it a little protected yet still be the weak link...

Thanks!
I got it torn down and off to the bedliner.... taking all that chit out was a PITA.... there are some evil bolts... right under the rear seats that have more than enough thread locker goo on them... I thought about holding the bolt and letting someone try and turn the Jeep in circles..
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/PA163722.jpg
Anyone with one of these who wants to remove the rear seats.... take the front bolts out first then hang the seat up with bungie cords or rope.. makes getting to the back ones a breeze... I fought with the back ones for a few minutes before I figured it out.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/PA163719.jpg
Once the back seats and trim was out I took an air hammer and busted out that annoying epoxy glue stuff that may have been what is holding the whole jeep together, I didn't want it under my feet and figure that the bed liner will be enough insulation/sound proofing that I need from the road anyway. After busting it out with the air hammer I took a brush wheel and cleaned everything up.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/PA163725.jpg
There was a bunch of that crap..
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/PA163729.jpg
I installed the Tuffy enclosure mainly for some tailgating at the Texan's game on Sunday and because I wanted it bedlined along with the tub... the Tuffy is sweet, offers a ton of space and can carry plenty of cargo. Everything I wanted to fit worked out just fine.

I got some looks while driving it over the the shop to get the liner sprayed, I wanted to just sit on a bucket for the drive over but figured that the local cops wouldn't think it was funny... especially because it is a 20 mile drive through town.....
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/PA163733.jpg
I went ahead and installed the Iggee seat covers on the front seats.

Yes they do! As with anything, a determined aggressor is going to get what he wants but this will slow him down. If I had it to do again I would have bought the ones that hinge on one side and latch on the other - that would make it where you only have to secure one side. I run a cable through the locks now but will upgrade to something stronger soon enough. I hate thieves and Houston is loaded with them.... I want them to look and keep on walking! Nothing is left unsecured except for the glove box and they can have whatever is in there.

They ran late at the bed liner place and didn't get it done by Friday. Everything is taped off and ready to spray on Monday so I should have some progress pics then. I am leaning towards having the PSC front bumper/stinger sprayed with bed liner as well. Even if it doesn't clean up as good as powder coat or rattle can - it should be tougher than woodpecker lips!

Finally made a little progress today..... it started with this!!
I saved $100 by having it sent to a business vs a residence - keep that in mind when ordering something heavy. Like a big ass bumper!!

Remember to order the ones that hinge on one side and latch on the other. Easier to secure. I picked up a cheap-o rubber floor mat at Home Depot, will cut it to fit in the space on the lid and underneath. Should help with wear and rattles, plus I can use it for a door mat when camping.

Made some progress today, got the Poison Spyder Rock Brawler bumper installed. Their instructions are damn good - no need to go step by step in this thread. Here is a link for complete details (http://shop.poisonspyder.com/v/vspfiles/assets/tech/PSC-INST-ROCKBRAWLERFRONT-JK.pdf). Have a good cutoff wheel and a dead blow hammer handy, makes the install much simpler. I was very impressed at the ease of installation. The folks at PSC really did their homework on this thing. My air compressor and 25 gallon tank have saved my butt over the past two weeks. I picked up a right angle air ratchet which is worth it's weight in gold IMO!
Painted up and staged for install...
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/2010-10-30083903.jpg
The old one was a bitch to get off after some custom fab work was done where I had the ends cut off to make it into a stubby. I had to notch and bend two tabs on the inside. Will install it on my buddies jeep, bend them back down and have the notches welded back solid.

Test fit, to mark some holes to drill.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/2010-10-30093934.jpg
A little redneck engineering on installing the PIAAs into the bumper, the holes are made to accept the factory fogs, which would have fit right up. I had to fab up a little bracket to make the PIAAs fit.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/2010-10-30110509.jpg
Got it back on, and bolted up. Ran the wires for the fogs and the winch. Also installed the fairlead and the light mounts.

Had to use a dead blow hammer to convince it to go on/off so there were a few spots to touch up. I hit the whole thing with some sand paper and taped the front off for the spray.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/2010-10-30143841.jpg
I like how the bottom of the bumper is a skid plate for the front part of the underside. RROR is going to take good care of the rest. The skid plate connects perfectly into the bumper using counter sunk bolts. Nice detail by PSC!

I found a rubber floor mat at Home Depot for $19 - it is simple to cut and after a little trimming it fits just right in the lid of the Tuffy enclosure. I will buy another one to go inside - cheaper (by third) than the aftermarket mats and better IMO, my Q-tec mat held water - these will keep things off the tub and will allow the water to drain out. Should help with rattles too....

Brightness ensues..... Jeebus....
The spots are crazy bright, the HIDs are unreal. The light from the HIDs seemed to go on forever. All the way to the end of my street which is about a half mile. It was lighting up houses that far down. I pointed them down a little so they cover the road as best as possible. The spots went on the windshield and cover the sides of the road. The whole package together is nuts.

Got home about 4:30 from the deer camp (didn't shoot anything) and needed to work out some frustration after a football game...
Got the snorkel and the front recon lights installed. The Recon lights were simple plug and play, just reached in and pulled the lenses and bulb out and pushed the Recon's in and plugged'em up. Will install the resisters later.
It was dark when I got done so the installed pics are not so good....
They are nice and dark in the daytime and nice and bright at night:
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/2010-11-07181144.jpg
The snorkel was very easy - the best part is taking a cutoff wheel to the hood. My wife thought I had lost my mind. (lost it a long time ago actually)

Snugged everything down, this thing is nice and tight - added some thread locker to the bolts. I pulled the tape off and installed some new tape so I could mark the spots to drill for the trim ring.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/2010-11-07173000.jpg
Trim ring ready to be installed, the rivets make it look nice and clean IMO.. (unlike the jeep)

Done, it took me about an hour and a half. Could have done it quicker if I was better at organizing my tools. They were sorted when this (re)build started a month ago, now it is a big mess in the garage.
Apologies... the Jeep needs a bath... now that I have my snorkel installed I can go take one in it
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i302/TheGman_/Rebuild/PB073847.jpg
Will get some better pics later. I added some RTV around where the snorkel fits into the air box, nice tight seal. I have a little cleaning up to do.
Also - the AEV snorkel works just fine with the RROR limb risers and any type of windshield lights.

Thanks!
They fit well together, if I catch a limb big enough to do any damage to the snorkel it will just pop the top off of it vs damaging the body of it. It is made of the same stuff that kayaks are made of so it is plenty tough. AEV did damn good on the design simple, secure and looks like it belongs there IMO. There is also a pre filter option for those in sandy conditions.

I need to tighten the risers just a bit, my plan is to slightly raise the hood and take out some slack. Should be good to go after that. Will finish them off by adding some shrink wrap over the wire ends to clean them up a bit.

Oh,..and a heads-up with that snorkle,..You'll hate it in the tight stuff. I have the pre-cleaner on mine, and I've had to replace 2 bowls already from smashing them on trees. lol
But man,..this thing is looking sick! Can't wait to see that PP stuff go on there!

Thanks for the heads up. I may look at getting another tip for it just to have on on hand. How often do you have to empty the pre cleaner, knowing that it depends on how dusty the environment is.... I thought about putting some panty hose on there when in the dust, it worked in the big cat box. There is a stubby antenna on there, it doesn't quite poke out the top. I mainly listen to Sat radio, the wife bought me one of those little receivers that I take from car to car (work etc...)

Actually I don't have to clean it that often. The only time it gets real bad, and this cracked me up, is in the rain. It will actually gather the rain drops and pool int he bottom and not let them into the filter. (or at least I've never felt the filter get wet after a rain).

Did you seal up the three holes in the bottom of the air box? Presuming you did, what did you use? I have some RTV and figure it will work good enough as long as it sets before running out the holes.
Did you raise your breathers? I have the tube and thought about running them to the air box. Sone just run them to the top of the fire wall w/o issues. It would be easier to run them there vs the box..... Not sure where I am going to go with it just yet.

I just ran them higher in the engine compartment. Everytime I get in water deep enough to worry about it, I swap my fluids after words anyways. I did seal those three holes. I used that heavy duty black RTV and then I also used it to build a "gasket" where every one of the mounts bolted to the body to help prevent rust and rubbing spots. Then I used it to seal the extra gap between the hood and the inner hood support where you cut for the intake; just to clean it up a bit and seal an exposed metal.

We modified the sliders to be weld on... the rear most slider mounted to the same spot where the rear control arm bracket mounts to the frame.. they wouldn't play well with each other.

Tinkered with the pinion angle up front a bit, had a little wobble between 45-60. Amazing what a few turns on the control arms will help get things dialed in. Also corrected the steering wheel that was off to the right just a hair. Again, nice to be able to take care of that with a 3/4 and a 1 1/4 wrench.
Also took some pics of the skids while I had it up in the air.

SavageSun4x4
12-15-2010, 14:27
I see a LOT of talk about sealing with silicone...ehhhh, not fast sticky breath. NOT all silicone is good for your specific purpose and it can, will and does dry out. What I recommend is a 'co-adhesive' product. There are several on the market that I have used for well over 40 years that are my 'go-to' products: 1) 3M Weather-stripping. This stuff is what was used for long before I came on the scene to glue the rubber door seals. It is a co-adhesive and WORKS. TIP: FOLLOW the directions (ask me how I know) 2) Gasket maker, PermaTex or other brand, co-adhesive and does NOT dry out, super sticky today and tomorrow. Does not have the strength of the 3M but can sure stop leaks as a gasket.
Silicone...well been using RTV since my racking days back in the 60's and a tube of it would make you swallow HARD. Some ARE adhesive products, but generally have weak staying power, dry out and do not age well under some circumstances, but still a near miracle product IF used properly. Think square peg in square hole.

Got it from Off Road Warehouse (ORW (http://www.offroadwarehouse.com/products/productID/51354)) in Cali. They had them for $115 shipped. Also picked up a couple siphon tubes for the trail - if you have not picked one of those dudes out try it - unless you like lugging gas cans up and down.

I finally got to go test everything out and I couldn't be happier with how it performed. It chewed up everything that I pointed it at and I ran some trails that I would have driven by before. The underside took a number of hits, the skids, control arms, tie rod etc.... all held up just like they should. The PSC front bumper allowed damn good approach angle, didn't have to dig with the front to get over some pretty steep inclines.

Ran into a little fitment issue that had to be worked out. They are made to work with the RROR sliders/armor (I have Shrockworks) was scratching my head on what to do with the two forward/lower most mounting holes. There isn't enough (flat) surface space at the bottom of the rear door to fit them up. My buddy fired up the CNC plasma table and fabbed up some tabs that fit like a charm. Will actually be stronger than going right to the body.

Finished up the work on the mounting tabs and painted flat black.
Also finished the clean up and touch up on the corners and dropped them off to get bed liner sprayed. Hope to get them back tomorrow and slapped on by the end of the week. If I can get it all together I plan on running out to K2 for a test run on the rocks.

It has been an interesting project.... I watched a buddy install a set of corners on his 2dr and it was pretty simple. I wanted the extra protection of a full corner that extended all the way down to the bottom of the back door. I didn't realize it was going to be such a pain in the ass to get them to fit up and mount right. If I had of known I would have went with the regular sized crusher corners. Once complete and actually on my Jeep I am sure I will be happy with the choice, just a lot more work than I expected. Thank goodness I know someone who has the skills and tools to make it go as smooth as it has.

Got'em back and slapped on today... all that is left is to drill/tap the holes in the new fuel door. The one I bought works with the stock skins.. little plastic clips hold the thing on and would last about 3/10ths of a second on the trail (ok, exaggerating a bit but not a secure attachment) the new, longer, stainless bolts will be just right once tapped.

The mounting tab that we made up fit just right...

They were a bitch and a half to get lined up... we used C-clamps and a ratchet strap strung from the sliders to the D ring to help get things where they needed to be. Once we got them lined up we tightened up the well nuts and it seems very secure. I have no experience with well nuts, hopefully they will hold up over time.

Thanks HB,
Its been a crazy week, got it all finished up.
The fuel door insert didn't work with the thicker skins so we drilled and tapped holes for the fuel door

Added some black silicone to the edges to finish it up.

Would a mod mind moving this over to the build thread section, apologies for the oversight when I created the thread.

Hey Ron, I saw that you opted for the 1310 rear driveshaft. Does that seem more than strong enough? I'm having a hard time trying to justify the 1350 and the extra $300 for it.

I was in the same boat as you. It was really a money choice, mine is a DD and I wheel every chance I get but its not that much, every month or so. If I lived where I could beat on it every weekend like Co or Ca I may have went with the 1350. If I break it I will go 1350..... I bet the 1310 will be just fine.

All the pics are not showing up on my Gov't computer but nonetheless, I think I am gonna "borrow" some of your ideas for my build. I don't have that VA gift that you received but I know you would still rather have a functional back. I like the limb sliders, I like to explore new (non-sanctioned) trails and sometimes get caught in some nasty spots where they would come in handy. There are a few old mining and logging trails back home that are 100 year old wagon trails that are frikkin' awesome. Couple of questions for you though......
What backspacing/spacers are you using for your wheels?
Where did you get your flat fenders?
Pretty sure those are 35" tires...maybe 37s?
I am sure I will have more questions soon as I am able to see more of your pics
Thanks

4.5 back spacing on the Walker Evans beadlocks with 37" Goodyear MTRs. Xenon fenders in the front for now with a custom set of tubes in the rear. The earlier photos had Xenons front/back.
The limb risers worked well on my last trip out just remember that they are only for small branches, they are attached with three rivets on top and a bolt on the bottom. The rivets will give first.

Have you had any issues with the Xenons? I was checking those out on Quadratec. I am thinking about picking those up and upgrading to the PSC ones later as more funds become available.

No issues with the Xenons. I folded one up on a tree last month and scuffed it pretty good. It was the passengers side front and I thought I had ripped it off.. It flexed then went right back where it should have gone, just as expected. I broke the little marker light on the corner and have not replaced it yet. I may buy a set of the PSCs or RRORs and have them bedlined to match the back in the future.
Dont spend your money twice. If you are rubbing you can trim the stock fenders and clean it up with some edge molding until you can get exactly what you want.
