can you swap AMC parts with Chrysler or Ford parts. I am trying to stroke my 1976 AMC 360 with a 401 crank

You have asked two questions:

1) Yes you can

2) Not sure

That said interchangeability is limited and the more specific and unique the part(s) will often lead down a path of zero success. Can you swap cranks? Yes and no! Yes if by some chance the crank specs are exactly the same. However I do not know of any swaps that meet your criteria. I would tell you that most swaps would be limited to things are simple to install. Such as installing a set of front seats out of a '06 Tahoe into a '55 Willy's wagon.

Could you make a crank fit sure as long as the crank journals are close to the proper width, length of crank is exact and the crank throws will not hit the cyl walls. Then take it to a highly skilled welder and have him build up the parts that do not fit due to too small. Then drop it off a a machine shop and have them completely regrind the crank to your specs. Of course you may just want to purchase a crank that is interchangeable to begin with rather than go to the expense of stuffing a square peg into a round hole.

As for stuffing a 401 crank into a 360 I believe it will fit. However I am not sure about years and models of engines and the interchangeability across the board. BUT before I launched on this I would jump over on one of the AMC racing boards/forums and toss out your question to the guys who live and breathe those things.

Let us know what you find out...

well, the 401 crank is hard to find and I am still working out the issues on if I can. I am thinking about boring it out to .30 and millin the heads down for better compression.

More compression is about the quickest and cheapest way to more horsepower. Not sure how much hp/torque you are hoping for but a .30 over, good set of pistons and a 'flat top' mill job taking your mill out to around 10.2:1 will really get you moving down the road. NOTE this is also going to put you in premo fuel at the pump. Let us know how you progress...
