View Full Version : Thinking about some upgrades.... Opinions

Ok, I got a quote from a company to upgrade my 8.25 rear axle, lock front and rear, and regear to 4.88's. This is just for the parts. Then I figure $600-$800 for labor if I don't try and **** it up myself.... Let me know what you guys think. Is this a good deal or should I look elsewhere or go a different route?

1579$ total to your door for:
D30r:
Carrier
Spartan locker
4.88’s and master bearing install kit

C8.25:
Detroit 29sp
1541H alloy 29splien axles and bearings and seals
4.88’s and master bearing install kit

How many miles a year do you put on your jeep?

XJMATT
11-22-2010, 12:53
225k - ish... tach wasn't working when I got it and I've since swithced out the gauge cluser :D

GOVT1911
11-22-2010, 13:21
Matt, Don asked how many miles a YEAR YOU PUT ON IT!! I'm betting the 225k is what is ALREADY on it. LOL

Don, as long as Matt keeps trying the water crossings, he won't put many miles at all on his Jeep! :p

XJMATT
11-22-2010, 13:26
Shit... obviously that's not what I read :D He must have gone back and edited it after I replied... hahahaha

A year? maybe 8k? That's because it's my DD, but that should change within the next year. Then it will just be for wheeling and when the DD is getting maintenance.

Oh, and now that I've relocated my intake I'll take on any water crossings as long as the water doesn't come up and completely cover my hood :D

Matt, it might be worth your time to call David at Northridge4x4. He has good prices, might cut you a deal since you're getting a boat load, and ships quickly. And customer service is superb.

I think you should look into putting a sweet speaker box in the trunk so it will thump while we're at the mall. just my .02

I think you should look into putting a sweet speaker box in the trunk so it will thump while we're at the mall. just my .02

that's on the list for next year. I want to thump on the trails first though, so these upgrades have to come first.

Today I'm taking off work to do my RMS and valve cover gasket. WHAT FUN! I'm going to see if I can run out in a few minutes to get the HEEP inspected first before I TOTALLY jack it up though.

You're not going to get much work done stalking people on MJ, bro. Have fun working on the XJ. Do good in case I ever have to replace anything on my Comanche. You are going to be the subject matter expert.

SavageSun4x4

If you are only putting a few miles on your Jeep and year and don't plan on anh long trips then do it yourself. Are you gonna phuck it up? YEP! But you will be close enough.

Lots of stuff out on ranches breaks and wears out, diffs are one of them. So do you think we unbolt the axle, load it on a trailer, haul to town and pay mega-$$$ bucks to get it fixed.

So, we jack it up, buy a Chilton guide and do it our selves. Few of the rigs see many miles and are not used for road trips. We get it as close as we can and call it good.

NOW sometimes close is not close enough and the ole diff starts making noise, mostly a whining noise and a bit 'o clunk in there. All in all not catastrophic, but it does tell me I will need to redo it later. Well there is a work around.

Fix for R&P wear: You will need a good cup or two of sawdust. The best is hard-heat pine which is loaded with resin. Otherwise a good hickory, mesquite or an other good hard wood will do. Pour a light oil in a can and mix in the sawdust. Only use enough oil to wet the sawdust. Now mix this with a good heavy diff oil 90 - 140 wt. Now add this to the diff. NOTE this comb is refered to as a 'Bo-Teak' oil like Deep Purple or the other brands out there. You have now solved you R&P issue.

Do it work, YES! and I can show you trucks that have been running on this solution for many years.

Got a rod knocking in that engine, I can fix it for you, just ask, spun bearings, no problem, leaking radiator, thats easy (fixed one that lasted over 25 years).

When the nearest neighbor is 22 miles away, nearest town is 65 miles innovation and creativity can be your friends...

I need this fix. My radiator is leaking and I was going to replace it.

Put an egg in it. Ask sebek. It works great. Have to wait to get the Che until tomorrow. USAA dropped the ball. Sebek and I did the rock drill today so we are ready for tomorrow.

Rock drill?

Oil pan is dropped and ready to pull the RMS, but spending time with the fam damily before the get on the road to PA. They're off in about half an hour and then it's back to work. YES, I am about the slowest worker in the f'n world. This shit is going to take me all night. :(

SavageSun4x4

I need this fix. My radiator is leaking and I was going to replace it.
I see you are in Fayetteville. Then you ought to be able to find a Willow tree around there. Cut a branch that is mostly dry and point it up a bit, then put it in the hole. Branch will swell and plug the leak until it rots out. Then do another branch...bought the truck with a leak and sold it 24 years later with the leak. Don't remember how often you need to do it, but not often.

Pepper works too, so will dry sawdust

Gotta think outside the box.

Rubitron
11-23-2010, 20:49
I can see how that would work to plug a hole, but what about a crack? I would guess that's a more common break.

XJMATT
11-23-2010, 22:01
Jay - I'm not stalking. I just jump on here real quick and check out the threads that have been updated...

A Willow Tree? That kicks ass. I need to hear about some more of these fixes.

I got the oil pan back on and I was going to try to tackle the valve cover gasket and install my new header, but I think that will wait until Sunday unless I'm fixing too much other shit I ended up breaking on Friday and Saturday. After I eat I'm going back out to put oil back in, reinstall the exhaust, cross my fingers and take it for a spin to make sure it's at least good enough to get me to work in the morning.

jaredmcvay
11-24-2010, 04:39
You put oil back in? That's a good idea.

For the leaking radiator, just put an egg in it. That's what Tommy told Sebek to do at Weird Woods and granted it didn't help Sebek's traction issues, but it stopped leaking on the spot.

GOVT1911
11-24-2010, 06:05
I've JB Welded cracked radiators before, worked well if you cover the whole crack and give it a bit before pressurizing it.

On that note, I saw a new AL radiator for a TJ on craigslist in F-ville, might-could get it to work?

If it wasn't on my checklist my dumbass WOULD forget.

I finished up late last night and everything seems good. I parked in a different spot at work today to see how much I'm marking my territory now. I still need to replace the oil filter adapter o-rings and the valve cover, but I'll do that on Sunday.

There's going to have to be some tit for tat in this scenario...

BTW what year is your Chero?

XJMATT
11-24-2010, 09:42
'92 - What year is that Comanche you're picking up today? I can't wait to see it. I need a DD and I'm looking at a stock-ish Cherokee, GC, YJ, CJ, or Comanche.... whatever I can find in decent condition for under $2500 after I save up some $$.

jaredmcvay
11-24-2010, 11:20
The Comanche is an 87. Looking around though, I haven't seen too many with the 4.0 so there has been some work done to step it into the 90''s (perhaps). I wanted a fun little project that I could haul crap in so this was right up my alley. We'll see what happens. I've loved the MJ since I was young. Who knows why?! they're not exactly the nicest things to look at...

XJMATT
11-24-2010, 11:25
I love them. I doubt I'll pick it up as my DD though, because I can't haul the kids in it. I've seen some REALLY nice MJ builds on jeepforum.

So, does yours still have the Renix motor in it then or has it had a newer one tossed in?

XJMATT
11-24-2010, 11:53
CRAP! Don't tell me that. I was hoping to get it and stash it in the garage, so my wife wouldn't see it :D She is not going to be happy with me getting something else, but for around $500 I'll take the abuse and ignore her.

jaredmcvay
11-24-2010, 12:02
Yeah, I was stoked when I saw that pop up for $500. That is like a drunk night on amazon.com so it really wouldn't hurt, ya know?! But once I started the email campaign, I realized quickly that it was all for not. That is when the wife and I actually talked about this other one and decided that I NEEDED it. You know how it goes. There are only a couple of things I need to really work through with it. One being the tires hit the control arms and unfortunately the sway bar discos. I may ditch the sway bar altogether. Another is the bias tires. I know those will get chewed up quick on the road (not that it will be on the road all that much)

XJMATT
11-24-2010, 12:12
Yeah, I would just rip the sway bar out. It's going to mostly just be a toy. The last time we went to the dumps I fogot to reconnect my sway bar and I ran back and forth to work like that for 3 days and didn't even notice.

For what you are using it for that $1800 one is a lot better anyway. You won't have to put much money into it and it's already set up to wheel.... locked and everything. The $500 beater I would just leave fairly stock to run back and forth to work with. If the guy would get back to me I could run up there on Friday and get it.

XJMATT
11-24-2010, 12:16

gotcha...

I'm not going to buy that trailer. If I didn't have one already I would jump on it, but if the wife came home and that was in the backyard she'd kick my ass. I'd love to sell my HF one and pick that up though.... cool as shit.

Hey guys on topic, new thread, or PM

Cracks...egg works, But u need to add to COLD radiator, then start, otherwise all you do is cook eggs.

JB weld works keep area dry and clean..large crack like a street ho, apply thin coat of JB let setup then apply the strength coat.

Crack on trail, no eggs or JB then loosen rad cap...BUT keep eye on temp Gage.

Bars Leaks been Around 4ever and works! We carried a can in all the ranch rigs and used it often.

Matt, what happened was that it drifted into a personal conversation. Certainly one could say my thread, my party. Often they will drift somewhat. We discussed axles which led to cost to set up, leading to leaking radiators. All within the context of post 1. Then it appears to have drifted into a personal conversation.

My guidance would be stay within the sprit of the initial post. Just like the advice I received when I became deputy sheriff...enforce the sprit of the, not the letter of the law.

Meaning. Do not write tickets for 1 mille over, or some guy taking his wife to the hospital to have a baby, give him an escort.
