View Full Version : Clutch install

I just bought a new clutch kit for the YJ, but I'm more than a little apprehensive about installing it myself in the garage. The Jeep isn't my daily driver so down time isn't an issue. Anyone know a shop that will do it at a reasonable price? I have been meaning to call Wilson's because I want to figure out my leaf spring gangster lean issue too, but I haven't gotten around to it. Also, if anyone has done clutches at home and thinks we can pull it off I'm all for providing the beer and the garage to do it in...

I'd also be happy to help you. I'm certain we can do it. But I'll only drink your beer if I can sleep with you. Uh... I mean at your house...

Eric, I have 2 spare beds that are always open. I would love to save some coin and do this at home. SR. Beaver (another MJer) is buying my rear seat and is willing to come up and help us out and pick up the seat at the same time. What all will we need to do it? I have a bunch of clutch alignment tools, although who knows if any of them is the right one. I also have a floor jack and jack stands and plenty of hand tools. Anything I may not have on hand?

Let me know when you're gonna do it, I'll show up. We should shoot for a SAT morning so we have all day to mess with it.

Yeah right now the plan is for Saturday morning. All are welcome. We will figure out a time when it gets closer to Saturday. I should have my seats and harnesses to install by then too. I also just ordered a new tie rod end for the outer end of my drag link that I need to install when it comes in.

Big things are PB'Laster, floor jack and jack stands, the clutch kit should come with the right alignment tool along with new throw bearing and pilot bushing/bearing. What motor/tranny/tcase you have in that? You wanna plan on Sat this weekend, just let me know what time you wanna start so I can plan the trip accordingly.

Something handy would be a (not sure on the name) transmission plate. It's a plate that goes on the end of your Jack with a vertical bar at each corner to keep the tranny from rolling off.
Sarge_CJ2A

The kit did come with the alignment tool and throwout bearing. I have everything else we should need, I'll look into the transmission jack though. Unless anyone has one??? How does 10am on Saturday sound?

Hey I bought a new diff cover for my Dana 44 up front too, what gear oil are you guys running in your diffs?

Mine calls for 75-140. I think most others are running 75-90. If you don't know, check with the locker company to see if you need a friction modifier also.
Mobile 1 75-90
You should reschedule this to Sunday. Then I could take off of work that night and swing by your place first thing Saturday morning when I get off of work. If everyone is already dead set on Saturday I'll try to make that work too though.

Sunday is Bears playoff game day. No chance of me missing it. Sorry man.
you don't have a tv in the garage :D
playoffs, huh? Must be nice to still be a part of those. :( My Eagles failed me last night
Ok, I'll make Saturday work. What time are you starting? I get off at 0700, so I could be there by 0730 or go get breakfast and coffee somewhere first if that is going to be too early.

I think we are going to start about 1000, but that's up to Neil, he's the one driving in. Although, if he needed he could stay here the night before and we can get an early start.
I'm down for an early start, but if you end up not starting until 1000 I'll probably go home and take a nap and then get over to your place closer to noonish.

01-10-2011, 18:22
If I leave here around 0400 I would be there around 0900 -0930ish, but that would work to crash at you're place as well if ya wanna get a early start, just let me know and I can do whatever, I have a free weekend to do whatever since the wife and kids are heading to FL.

It's entirely up to you man. You're the one driving the 5 hours to get here. I am free all weekend too, except for 1-5 on Sunday (GO BEARS). I'm off on Monday too. You are more than welcome to stay on Friday night if you need to.
Well one of you make a f'n decision, so I know what I'm doing :D

Just talked with the wife and she's taking off Fri morning so I'll head up Fri afternoon
Then I'll see you guys bright and early Sat morning. Want me to swing by anywhere and pick up breakfast?
Oh, and Nick.... where the hell do you live?

Not last time I checked, I do the same stuff and my wife thinks I'm nucking futs, she doesn't fully understand the Jeep culture yet
It's a woman thing.... no way will we understand it.
Only a woman would ask a guy that is driving HOURS to help you out to go to a hotel and be hesitant to let them stay at their place.
Sarge_CJ2A
01-10-2011, 21:13
Matt, my wife says she never said anything about staying at a hotel, just that she didn't want to get ax murdered. Also, if you want to pick up a shit load of breakfast burritos I know I would pitch in, as I'm sure everyone else would too.
Neil, thanks for promising not to murder us. My wife appreciates it.
TRUE....true...
Yeah, I can do that. Any suggestions on where you guys want me to stop between Bragg and Nick's house? Sonic, Chick-fil-A, or wherever...
Sarge_CJ2A
01-10-2011, 21:44
Sonic would probably be the easiest/cheapest.
Works for me. I always get the one with jalapanos. I don't know what else they have. Put your orders in now and I'll swing by and pick them up. Am I just buying for Nick, Eric, and the Beav, or is anyone else showing up?
Sarge_CJ2A
01-10-2011, 22:22
Pick up an extra one for the wife, jalapenos are a must. If you're taking drink orders, lemonberry slush is my drink of choice. Otherwise, burritos are fine. I'll have beer here for later in the day and we can grill some brats for lunch.

I'll get you back for three
no paybacks needed. I'll pick up a drink for you Nick, but wasn't planning on getting everyone drinks. Drink some f'n water....hahahahaha
Ok, so I'll just grab like 12 of the ones with jalapanos unless I get any special orders or find out someone else is going to grace us with their presence.
*edit*
and I'll get drinks for anyone else if you want them.... just send your request
Oh, and Nick.... I meant to post this up earlier and forgot. Harbor Freight has a fairly cheap transmission jack if you need one for this job.
http://www.harborfreight.com/1100-lb-high-lift-transmission-jack-33615.html
and if any of you are ever picking anything up from HF I always have 20% off coupons. I get them every month in motorcycle and Jeep magazines.
I'm in ! I will be no help at all but I will be there to make jokes and giggle and even take pics when the trans falls off the jack and on to someones arm.
Ok fine maybe I will help .
Sarge_CJ2A
01-11-2011, 08:09
Considering we aren't putting the Jeep on a lift, I don't think that trans jack is going to do us any good. I know my Jeep is big, but I don't think that thing is going to fit underneath it... lol
Sr. Beaver
01-11-2011, 08:13
Was thinking on the way in this morning what is the reason that you are putting in a new clutch? Is it slipping or grinding? If it's grinding you're gonna most likely will need to have the flywheel resurfaced or replaced, if there are any grooves or a lot of heat scars on it will just tear up the new cluth disc.
Sarge_CJ2A
01-11-2011, 08:15
Honestly I don't think there is anything wrong with the clutch it's self. The throwout bearing is making all kinds of noise though. I am going to check around the parts stores today and find out who has a flywheel in stock, if no one does I'll order one. That way if we find out that we need it then I'll just run and pick it up.

That's not ay all what I was thinking of. I've seen ones that go on the end of a floor Jack so we could just wheel it out and away. I don't think you want it slid across the floor?
It would probably be a lot cheaper to see if you could get the flywheel turned rather than replaced. When I did my my brakes it was half the price to turn them rather than replace.

I looked for a plate that went on the floor jack but couldn't find one. Let me know if you know where to get it. Otherwise we can set it on my creeper and roll it.
Also, I've heard that turning the flywheel won't eliminate hotspots. Plus, I'm not sure what kind of shape the ring gear is in after that little start fiasco I had a while back. We'll see what happens.
Here is one from Home Depot, but it is a seperate jack too.
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100595204&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_sku=100595204&ci_src=14110944&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googlebase-_-D25X-_-100595204&locStoreNum=980
or here is one from Northern Tool that you can put on a hydraulic jack you already have...
http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200332755_200332755?cm_ven=Aggregates&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=Auto%20Repair%3EJacks&cm_ite=144423?ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=144423
and a few more options from good ole HF....
two more adapters
http://www.harborfreight.com/transmission-adapter-95640.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/floor-jack-transmission-adapter-39152.html
or another full tranny jack, but not a beast that you need a lift for...

So I just found out I'll be heading up a little earlier on Friday than I planned, Since one of the companies decided not to have their equipment ready for turn in when BDE was making the trip up there, so as soon as I'm done with my flight physical Fri morning I'll be on my way to turn that in, and we could get a jump on it fri afternoon/evening time frame if y'all want to.

Right now I'm 25U but since we're over strength from E5 down I have to reclass and I'm going with 15W, not real aviation, but UAV's. Everything else I wanted to do is already over strength or not open for E5 reclass

UAV's would be cool. I'm an Air Traffic Controller, but lately I've been thinking about flight school.

Not sure on exact timeline yet, going to depend on how long I'm at the Doc's in the AM, and how long it takes dealing with the civilians that I need to turn the equipment into once I get to Bragg and how lost I get trying to find them. Haven't been on Bragg since I was a kid so I'm sure there ain't much the same.

I think we are going to get started around 1000. You can show up around 9 or 30 if you want. I told John, Eric and Dave 1000. Sebek might also make an appearance later on.
oh, SHIT... hahahahaha... then I guess you don't want me showing up before 8am :D I guess I'll go home, say hi to the fam damily, then swing by Sonic for everyone. I think I'm going to drive the HEEP over too, so all of the expert mechanics can take a look at it.
alright, so I'm still picking up breakfast. I'll get Nick his drink and 15 burritos. If anyone wants anything else just hit me up at 301-755-3956 before 0930.

Nick ran the Jeep over to Get Ugly and Tank fixed it up. I beleive he welded the studs to angle iron and then welded the angle iron to the frame for a nice, solid mount. I swung by while they were working on it, but couldn't stay long.
NICE! How much did that cost him?
