I'll be going to Alaska in January. Other than all the Jeep and off-road stuff, what should I expect as far as P.T., the average work day (88M), days off, and passes. Any information is good information, so if you got anything please let me know.
Unless I missed it somewhere you haven't said what base you are going to.

Found this in a previous post.
"I'm not sure what unit, my whole unit is probably going to be coming out from Germany."
As far as days off, passes, and all the other unit level scheduling manpower and mission centered stuff, I would venture to guess that you would have to talk to someone in the specific unit that you will be going to for the most accurate info as each unit will most likely be different.

I concur...talk to your new unit rather than rely on hear-say.

thats not the army way.....
i have nothing constructive to offer other than when you get there, dont let that be your first question. let your first question be when do i start and where do i report and you will be the guy that came to work and those guys are first on the list for pass's and other special stuff

Are you going to wainwright or Greely? I was at Wainwright but only briefly with the SugarBears and in the summer. Did some short trainings in the winter a year or two later. PT sessions were frequently on Mt Beech (I think that was the name) which was a local ski slope nearby. Pretty cool, either run up the slope or run up the access road along the side. Moose pass along the pt route all the time. Other than that, it was PT on and around the airfield. The aviation unit there is of course quite a bit different in their PT mindset (no offense to any rotorheads here). The winters in Jan are about -30 to -60 on average, but its really not all that bad. Your eyelashes and nose hairs freeze (feels a little wierd) but the cold is dry, so its not all that bone chilling like you'd find with "wet" cold elsewhere - there is a difference. The px and mini malls are pretty small but there is a lot to do in Fairbanks. Get friendly with the Chinook pilots and when they head out to Anchorage, catch a ride for some real fun. Stay away from the Great Alaskan Bush Company!!! Its in Anchorage and you'll find out about it when you get there.
Not much, and again I was just there periodically for training.....
Oh, and get used to plugging in your block heater wherever you go.
Like the other guys said, talk to your unit before getting there-they have the real skinny and most details!

Are you going to Wainwright or Richardson?
Wainwright can get down to -60 to -65 in Feb,
and up to 90 and 3,000 tourists in the Summer.
Hopefully you'll be here in Anchorage. ;)
