so i installed a np242 over the xmas break. when i swapped the input gear i needed into it i noticed it was MUCH beefier than the 242 i had killed.. it had an 1.5in chain and much thicker shafts.. much to my suprize it doesnt have a 2wd ability.. just 4LO, N, 4H, and 4H/L.
is it possible i managed to get ahold of a tcase from a HUMMWV?

whats the tag on the case say?

if its from a hummer it'll say 242AMG
if its from a jeep it'll say 242AMC or 242J
if its from a GM it'll say 242C

if it's a J or C, then its broken

betting AMG with that shift pattern.

Sounds like you got a 249, which is a Full Time case they used in ZJ's.

My 242 shifts:

2WD
4Hi Part Time
4Hi Full Time
N
4Lo Part Time

242AMG has a 1.5-inch wide chain

231C/HD has a 1.5 inch wide chain also

i know its def not the 249.. the 249 has the viscuos coupler(puck) inside it.. thats what i took off the jeep the first time years ago. and i know its not a 242C because it'd be clocked for passenger side drop.
this thing had cooler lines on it that you run from the tranny. it also had the military rubber boot type electrical connections.

i picked it up from some guy in alaska that had it sitting in his shed, brand new, never had oil in it. he said he got it for his 1ton plow truck, but it was the wrong one. this guy restores old military vehicles like half tracks and m35s and APCs.. awesome guy..

when i get a chance today i'll climb under the jeep and take another look

Maybe you can help me rebuild my 241 in the JK. I think the chain went bad. Otherwise, I am going to take it out to Tank...

actually the 242C is drivers drop, when they went to IFS from Solid axles in '88 they changed the drop, pre '88 solid axle 4wd truck have pass. drop, post '88 driver drop.

well.. what i thought was a NP242 AMC when i picked it up is definitely a NP 242 AMG.. both good and bad for me.. its a rather bulletproof case, but im back to full time 4wd... erg..

just to wake up an old thread (and I need an answer pretty quick), can I siamese the input from my 242c onto a 231j? if so, what does it take and how hard is it?
