Ok, I've got a RE 2" BB, some discos, and a new steering stabilizer I've been wanting to get out of the apartment and on to the jeep for some time now. I've also been having some steering vibs I'd like to check on (thinking trackbar, control arms or tie rod). I'd prefer to do this myself instead of paying a shop, but I've got a bum right hand (almost useless) and no place to do the install. If there's anyone out there that would like to volunteer a place and some of their time, I'd be greatly appreciative!

Fort Belvoir Auto shop. I don;t care what anyone says about how easy it is to do some work in their driveway, having a lift to work on makes it a lot easier.

Narrow it down to a specific day and time and I may be able to help you out. If you don't have a DoD Decal, you can still get on the base and someone with a military ID card can just sign for the bay. I would do that as long as you paid for the time and any special tools used.

hobby shop on belvoir?
edit: Blast!

Ditto. Drive way installs blow compared to a two post lift. If you narrow down the date, I can call ahead and make see if the hook-up is working to make it cost a fraction. Either way, post a date and I'm sure I can come.

we run cars in and out of there all the time.. probably about 10 cars to date that I've worked on in there.

Hell, I could not even count the number of jeeps that we have worked on at the Belvoir Auto Shop. I told them today that I am going to have a plaque made for their wall that says "The Birthplace of Military Jeepers" since it was outside one of the bays that the idea was tossed around and soon after, implemented.

Bay 7 on Jared's lift wasn't it?

Thanks everyone for the quick responses!
I've got nothing going on all weekend. If anyone can make it on Sat or Sun that would be great for me, if not, I could always push back till later next week some time.
I'm not too familiar with Ft. Belvoir. I drive from Tulley gate to the hospital quite often, but have no idea where the hobby shop is... directions?

Thanks again!

When entering through Tulley gate, you willget your ID checked, then go straight as if you were going to the hospital.

Go straight through the first light, then turn left at the second. If you go straight by mistake, you will see the shopette and starbucks on your left.

About 1 mile down on your left you will see the auto shop. As you are driving towards the shop, you will pass a housing area on your right. If you keep your eyes looking left, you will see the garage bay doors behind a fence and some trees.

My advice, especially if you are planning on doing the work on a weekend is to get there early to be one of the first in line for a lift. Lifts go fast. I think we got there last Friday and I had to wait about 4 hours for a lift. It is better to get there before they open to secure a lift than to have a handful of people standing around waiting for a lift to open and contemplating going home because they have other stuff that they could be doing during the downtime.

With it being the holiday weekend and all, maybe it would be easier if I just planned for next weekend, Saturday the 12th. Any takers?

korisu56

I can probably be a solid for that one. I don't recall having anything planned.

Looks like I've got a few possibilities for the 12th.... so how about I resurrect this thread tuesday or wednesday and we can figure out a time then.

If it's on Saturday, your time is already set in stone bro. It's gonna be at 0830 so you can be in line for a lift. I would just resurrect to remind.

Bringing it back up...
Is Saturday morning still good? If so, I plan on being there early to make sure I get a lift and not on the list.

Question... I've got a warn winch / bumper on the front and I'm noticing that the front sits a little lower than the rear. I'm also hearing that the stock rubicon springs are slightly inadequate in holding the extra weight. Should I think about getting a new set of springs to put up front as well?
If so, any recommendations?

korisu56
07-08-2008, 20:08
I'd just go with a spacers on the front (which you can get at Q-tech, 4wd, etc). That'll offset the weight without breaking the bank. If you're gonna replace the springs, may as well put a little more space between your axles and the frame with a lift :)

Saturday, I'm out. I have to head up to Delaware on Friday night to take care of some final stuff before I fly to FL for a wedding. Yay.

I'm already doing the 2" RE spacers and shocks... spacers on top of spacers?

korisu56

Let's see how it looks when you put the spacers in.

Thanks guys!
It looks like they open at 10 on Sat, so I'll probably be there around 9.
It's been a few years since I've used a hobby shop... all I need is license, mil id, registration and insurance correct?

miljeep
07-10-2008, 11:19
Just get there early enough to get a lift bay and have a military id card and you should be good to go.

All I can say is wow! Thanks doesn't even come close to how appreciative I am. Beers are definitely on me at the 1st m&g I make it too.. and any other way I can help you guys out, just let me know!

So... when's the next trail drive?

Oh, and everything ran smooth on the drive home. Still have the vibs that I was talking about earlier, but hopefully an alignment and balance takes care of that.
