View Full Version : rhino liner vs line x
When jeep designed the jk they put very little thought into the carpet, the pad is like a sponge. so i need to get my wifes jk rhino lined or line x. Does any body know which is better/what the prices are? And no she wont go for herculiner(i did that to her old 98tj) she says here jk is too new for it. just want some info.
I did the pep boys herculiner on my TJ and I think I did a good job for the price but then again its damp right now as I forgot to put the cover on when the rain started. may sound stupid as I dont know how much off road it expects but Herculine it then get some indoor out door carpet - without the padding and using the factory as a template replace the carpet. you get best of both worlds.

I looked at both but have yet to get it done.
The Rhino is thicker and flexible and runs about 550 if you remove the seats and carpet.
Line-x was 450 (once again if you remove the seats/carpet) but I've heard that its not very flexable and tends to chip if you get a dent.
I used 4 cans of $7 krylon (i think) spray bedliner from autozone. If it gets messed up, I just spray it again. I'm only trying to keep rust away.
Price is going to depend on 2 things...
1. Is your wife's JK a 2-door or 4-door?
2. Are you going to strip the interior yourself or have the shop do it?
I had the interior of mine hit with Line-X. I LOVE IT! It's hard to beat their reputation and a lifetime warranty.
A good price for a 2-door would be $600. Look to pay about $800 for a 4-door...and that's if you strip it yourself (which I would recommend).
Here are 2 pictures of mine with Line-X...

Damn...I don't think the pix are working. Maybe something is wrong with photobucket...who knows? Anyhow, perhaps they'll start working later.
Most of the local automotive paint suppliers have a product called Hippo-Liner, you need access to a compressor, an undercoating gun $30. they can mix it to match your paint, between mixing and buying the product, about $125. a little prep, mask it off and shoot. Looks great, is tough, but it does not have the softer texture like lineX

hmm, never heard of that. We just herculined my rig a couple of weeks ago, but it would have been nice to check out the hippo-liner as another option. Thanks for posting.

No contest LineX is the best in the biz. It's UV stable, more durable, and looks 100% better. Rino usually looks like a couple 3 yr olds sprayed it on.

I had Line X put in my pickup bed three years ago. It still looks good and have had no problems with it. I asked about the inside of my YJ and they told me between $500-$550 if I took everything out. With my Jeep being an 88 I think I will do it myself and put the extra money into other mods.
I had my Bass Boat done in Rino 4 years ago and it still looks like new!

I have Linex in my truck bed and my CJ7. Wouldn't have anything else! It's great stuff.
I prefer Linex, it's thinner and looks better.
I actually used red Herculiner on the inside of my Jeep.

I had Rhino sprayed in the bed of my Toyota for $500 and its peeling up in several areas. I put Herculiner in the tub of my CJ7 myself for $76 and its rock solid. I've heard good things about Lin-x as well, but the Herculiner is REAL easy to use yourself and its inexspensive!

I have had both Line-X and Rhino Lining sprayed in the beds of past trucks, and I had Herculiner in the tub of my old YJ. Out of the three, I would choose the Line-X. It was very solid, and held up against the elements...as well as things getting thrown in the bed of the truck. The Rhino Liner was nice, but it did fade after just one year and if you came in contact with it, you would have black stuff all over you. It just seemed to rub off on you skin and cloths. The Herculiner was cheap and easy to install. It was also very solid. However, it was uncomfortable as h__l on bare feet. That was really the only downfall...that and having to install it yourself.
line X last pretty good, Rhino works really good, Tuff is also really good.
Line x cold application hard non pliable chips easy
rhino cold ap a bit more pliable good warrante most shop touch up if damaged
Tuff warm apt really stands up to work and shifting never had to use warranty
costs some variences from 50-200 $$$
good friend of mine used herculiner and he has never had any issues and if he needs to he can do it himself

Im taking my LJ to get the inside Line X'd next week. :D
He is going to spray the inside, over the top of the tub rail, and the door/tailgate sills.
Already pulled the Tuffy drawer, all the carpet, and half of the center console. The rest of the console and seats will come out before I drive it down there. (Driver seat will be held in by one bolt. Im gonna pull the mount for the rear seat as well.
Any advice before I get it sprayed? Anything else I should pull out?

I would leave all the bolts in your driver's seat. You can crack them if you want so they come out easier when you get to the shop, but with just 1 bolt in there the seat will move around quite a bit.... not to mention, you'll be screwed if you get into an accident on the way. In all honesty, I think it took me about 5 minutes to remove the 4 bolts from each seat.

OK thanks! Any other advice?
Get a box of the squishy foam ear plugs. You'll need to put them in every hole you want to be able to use again. Other wise you'll need to rechase all of the threads before you start putting things back together.
We did the ear plugs when doing my jeep, and also did the wads of painters tape. The ear plugs would sometimes be pulled out when we ran the roller too close to them, but then again it was like 200 degrees outside when we did mine and the stuff got thick fast.

OK, the interiors all yanked with the exception of the drivers seat and the front portion of the center console. Ear plugs in all the bolt holes?
Any body know how to remove the T portion of the auto trans shifter handle so I can get the console out?
you don't have to remove the T handle portion. Just pop the part of the console out that shows the gears, then twist the console a little to work it over the T handle. I had to remove mine, and if I could do it, I know you can :)

most t handles should just pull straight off. I've removed mine on my xj a couple times. I Just pulled the E-brake, pushed it back into 3, and got in the back seat and yanked it straight back. Came right off. Putting it back on just requires a little big of force. No big deal. Before pulling though, check for a locking hex nut or something. Might have one, might not.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help and suggestions. Sorry for the delay, but with recent events I just have had no time recently to post.
The Jeep got lined last Fri and came out awesome. The transition lines around the front door sills, tub rails, and tailgate are perfect. I agree with the earlier posts. The texture, depth, and quality of finish of the Line X are all excellent. It was alot of work and expensive but I feel worth it in the end.
The ear plugs were an awesome idea and the Line X guy liked it so much he took some money off. He had been cleaning out all the threads for his customers and this will save him alot of time.
Took the easy way out on the console. With time constraints and my light switches mounted on it, it was still in place when I delivered it to Line X:
JeepinSoldier: I cant get the console off.
Line X guy: No problem, we'll take care of it for you. :)
Ill post up some pics when I can.

Frederecksburg Line X. $100-$300 cheaper than the places around here. Also, getting just the inside is cheaper than if you have tub rail and all the door sills done too. Alot less time and masking.
Call Phil Battisti at 540-361-1949. He does Alot of trucks and has done several Jeeps and old style FJ 40 Landcruisers for iron pig off road. Tell him Alex with the silver Jeep sent ya.

$650.
Again, it will be more or less depending on what kind of Jeep you have and what you want.
While I was dropping it off, he was talking to another Soldier about spraying the entire exterior of an XJ.

A guy in my complex rhino'd the entire outside of his toyota, I think he said 3 years ago.....
Anyways, looks like total junk now. The sun has faded it and parts are starting to crack. It would be easier and cheaper for him to try to sell it rather than try to get that stuff off so it could be redone.

I dont know of another professional company who color matches the spray on liner, but if you are going to apply it yourself I know that you can get both the U POL Raptor and Herculiner liner in colors.

Which is why I say rino is junk. We just had our GOV done in it, it's the best job I ever seen for a rino, it looks realy good, thankfully it's covered but a no windows fiberglass cap, hopefuully it keeps the UV away.
Megan, Contact a LineX dealer and ask them. Don't waste your time and $$ on anything but LineX unless you do a do it yourself.

How tuff is the Line-X to clean?? My dad has it in his truck bed and it's pretty rough. I think it would be tough to clean. I would love to get the outside of my XJ done.

I have not had it for long, but the line x inside my Jeep is easy to clean. While I was away at a school in CA, my wife drove my Jeep and one of the kids spilled a Starbucks mocha all over the floor. It was dried nice and sticky by the time I got home.
It just wiped right off the line X with a wet towel. Good thing that was not spilled all over carpet! :)

I was looking into Line-X last year, and after everything I read, I decided that if I were to do any kind of bedliner, it would have to be Line-X. The price is the only reason I haven't done it yet.
