Last I heard you can't take anything with you, but I haven't looked into it so don't take my word for it.

yes you can take them, you have to pre reg them before you get to a check point. it is like 50 bucks i think. i will be on my way to Alaska in a few months. look at your orders, their should be an area that has all the info for you.

Yes, you have to register them with the Canadians, including serial numbers. If you don't report them and they happen to search your vehicle and find them, you NEVER get them back, plus some fines. Ship them by air or sea.

Shipping them is the best bet. Or you can fill out the paperwork before hand as mentioned. They have boners for hand guns.... No issues at all (w/completed paperwork) with my hunting rifle - my dad too. There were a bunch of duck hunters with shotguns in line with us and they didn't have any trouble.

If your heading to Alaska, either ship the guns, or take the barge/ferry thing out of Washington state.

Going hunting inside of Canada with long guns is one thing, they want your tourist $$$$$

If you have any handguns your best bet is to ship them, or send them from one FFL to an Alaskan FFL.

I only live 150 miles from Canada, and I don't even bother going up there anymore. Major pain in the arse crossing the border.

I just saw this, sorry. I went through this whole debate back in Jan, for move in Feb and you are correct in SHIPPING your weapons is most hassle free. I transported ammo, but made sure it was easy to get to, no problems with CAN or US border checkpoints. We took the ferry from WA to Haines, AK and then drove ALCAN.

DON'T take them through Canada. Paperwork hassle at best. Jail, weapon confiscation, or border crossing denial at worst. The ONE thing the Canucks asked when we PCS'd and drove up was where our weapons were. They had us take out our mover's inventory, and show where our weapons had been packed by the movers. Yes, you can bring in rifles under certain circumstances and paperwork. They will flip a brick if you try to bring a handgun.

Wish I had easy access to the Canadian border website that gives details, but I just researched, because I'm about to do the drive again, to bring an RV. I'm not going to bring a weapon, but I *AM* going to bring ammunition to save money and shipping to get it up to Alaska. You can bring up to 5,000 rounds.

Oh, and yes, we took the ferry too. Unless you get one of the rare ferrys that goes all the way from Washington State to Seward, you get off in Haines, AK and still have to drive into Canada before re-entering AK. Still HIGHLY recommended. Absolutely gorgeous.

ship them in your HHG. My first move with the Army I did this and it went fine. It just gets tracked same as any sensative item. They track serial numbers, make, model, and pack them in a box, but they marked the box MISC or something along that lines so no one at storage locations knows there are guns in there.

I just sent mine to someone through UPS and picked it up when I got here.. MUCH cheaper, and didnt have to deal with the BS. BUT, when I went through either border, they didnt search shit. If you need someone to send your gun to, you can send it to me or probably any other member on here and we can meet up with you and get it to you.

Good luck!

That works with long guns, but I'm pretty sure that handguns and AR style need to be sent through an FFL.
