I have a set of 4.88 gears for my LJ that I need to get installed, I have NO experience doing so. A buddy of mine was supposed to help me out but he is in the middle of a PCS so now I have gears and no knowledge on installing them. Anyone in the area able to help out? I have the garage space, ample tools (I believe everything needed for the install) and can provide the food and beer. They're for a D44 and D30.
Hit me up on here or a PM if you can help

Scooter, I don't think that is something you want to tackle on your DD (that is your DD right?). I've got some 4.88's waiting for my ruby when I get back from the sand box and I'm not about to try without ALL the right tools. And even then the experience helps.
Check with the guys at Six States Distributers (truck MX place on Commercial Dr), they usually do Semi-truck jobs but have all the jiggs for install and they told me they do the small axles when they aren't busy. Setting up diff gears has too many fine points that need to be perfect or else you'll end up replacing them again in a year or less. My .02

I've helped with a few installs when I was in NM with a buddy of mine who had experience doing them. That's why I'm looking for someone with the experience. I wouldn't tackle this on my own. My neighbor has friends who own their own shop who may be able to help me with the job. Waiting to find out. But if any one out there has the experience, please let me know

For doing gears, it always helps to have someone who has done it before help you the first time around.
But if that's not possible, then pick up the "Jeep Owners Bible" by Moses Ludel. He goes through the setup process step by step, even has a list of what tools you will need.
If you can turn a wrench, read a dial indicator and a cailper, and follow written directions (with lots of pictures-I need pictures! :p ) you can set up your own gears.
I did my first set up a few years ago, and have done a dozen or so since then. Never had any go bad yet.

ETA: The big thing with doing gears, especially the first time, is to allow enough time to do it right.
Once you have all the tools and parts, allow at least 2 full days to complete the first one, as you will be checking and double checking (sometimes triple checking) every step as you go.
I also find it easier to pull the axle, and do it in a stand. But that has a lot to do with my disabilities. I can't lay under a Jeep and turn wrenches for very long anymore.
