Anybody got suggestions where to get some stock to build a front and rear bumper in or close to the Stewart or Savannah area
well, if you want some tough stuff, see if you can find areas where there is drilling rigs for oil or natural gas, even refineries. sch. 40 pipe is what i used for my rear bumper, sch 160 for the rock sliders + 4x4 angle iron. all together it cost me around $60, if you find some drill pipe, you would have one of the strongest bumpers around . another suggestion would be a junk yard or scrap yard, you may have to go digging but normally you can find some good stuff when you get to look for yourself! if you want pics on some ideas i can get some for you.

here's an ok pic with the rear bumper. i used the old bumperet, cut off the sides, coped them out to fit the 2" sch 40 pipe, wrapped 20' of logging chain around the pipe and welded it all together. testing it out i now know it can be used as a jacking point for the handyman jack and it don't even want to bend! while on this pic. the safari top i made as well. used a frame from a 2000 tj, cut it in half and removed the cloth. as the replacment material i used green tent canvas. had to grind out the channel to make it front fit the windsheild, but it fits tightly with the tj buckles and the carpet hold downs that might be in your rig. put in my own button snaps along the roll bar. if you do this be a good idea to have someone sew the ends so it don't fray over time, but i used super glue and hasn't come apart. the rear part of the frame is mounted to the roll bar. i used the brakets to bicyle reflectors to mount it. both are held in with bolts.

this sis the 1 1/2" drill pipe i got, think it was sch 120. welded it to the roll bar not only as added support, but mostly as the anchor point for my 5 piont harnesses i now have

here's the heavy weight sch 160 rock slider and the angle iron mount i told you about. the pipe is 2", but is around 1/2" thick walled, wieght per foot i'm guessing around 5-8 lbs. the angle iron i ran from wheel well to wheel well trimmed to fit. this to is strong enough to be used as a jacking point for the handyman. it's bolted in the side of the tub as well as on the bottom, though spacers were needed to make a tight bolt up. they do hold up to rock impacts and scraps pretty good, tryed them out on the last trail i was on

made these doors from and old aquarium frame i found, notice no latch! i used sprung steel that would basically snap and secure to the door striker. the rope is one soild strand and it took a long time to wrap it around for padding but it hold up really good. used a carrige bolt and found a cheap motorcyle mirror for the drivers side door.
you might notice that i also have a cowl hood. i did that for one reason, heat removal from the engine bay at low-low speeds. normal operating temp is what around 200-210. arfter i did this my engine temps went down to and averageof 180.
hope this helps you out with ideas

I had a front bumper on my 92 wrangler made out of 3/8" oilfield tubing and I wanna say 6" channel iron. It took a deer at 75 without blinking, a car at 35 and didn't bend. The truck that hit me doing 55 did the job though. If you want I can see if I can find a pic for ya.

cool thanks it gives me a few ideas, is that where the truck hit you in the bottom pic, looks bad hopefully you walked away with no injuries

Probably the only reason I'm still walking is the grill guard. The engine was pushed back to the firewall. If it had been the stock bumper i'd probably still be pulling engine out of my shins.

wow that was bad then, glad you are still walking around with out the engine splints

HID's are awesome! My XJ had single beam HID when I bought it. I swapped them out for a set of true HID HI/LO. The single beam was supposed to be a LO beam, but it blinded everyone, especially the little cars.
What's the extra wires for? That the halogen high beams? If so, you'll probably never use them.

38070yea i just did a test drive with it dark outside and holy sh&% they are bright, i thought i got flashed bye cars before now it will be worse lol. the extra wires are for a day running bulb or i can wire it into my turn signals if you look close enough you can see the little bulb on the inside of the lens, not sure if i am gonna hook it up yet

Ok, gotcha. I looked at a set of headlights in a hot rod mag that had turn signals in them like that. Thought about them for the CJ, since the winch blocks the factory ones in the grill.

just not sure how well if i hooked them up how they would work, or if it is legal to since it is a blue bulb

whats the final plans for the build? bigger axles? tires? suspension?
eagle_91wrangler
10-11-2011, 22:48
all the above
i wanna do a 3 inch suspension and put 35's under neath
as for axles i am not sure what to do with them yet
i have plans for my front and rear bumpers drew them out to build them just have to find some stock, went to the junk yard and found a few things to use and modify for my needs, just need time and money

10-11-2011, 22:50
i also have a design for a windshield light bar i wanna build then i can move the lights around and add the bella 500 set i was given as a present
just so you know, i put a 3.5 lift on my '90 with 34" TSL's. going down the highway they did fine, but when you go wheeling your tires will end up rubbing on the fender. i ended up cutting about an inch from mine, plus adding 1.25" lift shackles. i case your needing to do this, bushwacker makes some economy flares for about $250. they look like the cut out type, just you don't have to any trimming on them. plus you might waqnt to look into getting the slip yoke eliminater for the diff. i have yet to do this mod myself, but i can tell you my rear yoke ,when wheeling, is almost pulled out.

thanks I am trying to improve my rig one pay check at a time got a few ideas for a lift and a winch in mind but it takes money and time and right now i got plenty of time and not much of the other
korisu56
01-07-2012, 22:40
dont we all. I haven't done much to the CJ in while. Waiting until I finish this 10 month TDY stint. she'll go plenty far without a lift anyway. i'm keeping mine a little lower anyway cause a growing jeep is raises its operating cost just as much as the initial with lift/tires/wheels etc. this way I keep decent mileage and can buy other fun stuff. plus, our jeeps are so light we can go over a lot of crap anyway. hah
eagle_91wrangler
01-08-2012, 09:54
This is true right now i can manage about 285 miles on a tank of gas, which is improving as i continue to do tweaks to the engine and tuning
