I am just over the Hartman bridge towards Baytown but will be in the woods flinging sharp stick pretty much ALL of October....
Some decent wheeling (sand) in Galveston on the west end.

Good to know. I'll have to check it out. Is it basically near or on Pelican Island?

San Luis right by the toll bridge is the place to be. Go to the sea wall and take a right, to the west, when you get to the toll bridge, instead of going on it, take the paths at either side. The water is nice, not muddy brown like the rest of Galveston, and the beach is huge. Plenty of room to throw up a tent or at least a canopy for some shade. You can bring ATVs and there are a few places to "wheel" but I wouldn't consider it to be somewhere to go wheeling. Plenty of sand to get into and people (dumbasses) to pull out of the sand.
Crystal Beach got washed away by IKE, it is on the east side of the ferry from Galveston Island... it used to be an awesome place, now it is just gone.. sucks.... you can wheel a little bit on the shore down towards the east past Crystal Beach.
You can wheel the entire beach of Follets Island, (San Luis Pass to Freeport) (South/West of Galveston on the shoreline across the toll bridge)
Bryan beach is nice. water is clean, beach in clean, you can camp, drive etc...
You cannot drive right up to the shoreline at any of the beaches within the Galveston city limits, so go east or west and out of the city to get away from the crowds and get access to the shoreline.
Anywhere that you see a sign that reads "Beach Access" you can drive to the shore line.
The weather should be PERFECT this weekend!

Pelican Island is a national refuge... no beaches (that I know of) it is home to TAMU Galveston, Seawolf Park (SS 197 Memorial) Seawolf park is unique in that it has a sub, and the remains of a merchant ship, and a destroyer escort (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine) designed to conduct anti-sub warfare - the hunter, hunted, and the protector - all in one museum area. (<-- from WIKI) There are also a couple Navy ships etc.... cool place to visit but no wheeling.
