Yeah, I'd love to see someone in a jeep try that, especially the fools runnin 35+ inch tires on dana turdy 5s! Can we say CARNAGE!

I think it would have to be locked in order for this to work.

You would think that a strap would be safer than a chain. I would hate to see what would happen if that chain broke.

Looks like something MacGyver would come up with...

You are absolutely correct. On the m998 that's why the spindles have the piece bolted on it with the hole all the way through so you can slide a pipe in it and get yourself out.

Old thread, but first time I saw it. This technique should still be taught in basic drivers training. I know I still teach it. It was first used (first time I saw it) on a 2 1/2. You use the breaker bar between the two rear wheels (on the same side through the rim) attached to 1/4 rope (used to be with AII). Then just put it in reverse, and it winds up. It'll pull you out. You can also do it with HMMWVs, but I wouldn't try it with 1114s or 1151s. 998s, 1097s, any of the lighter ones I wouldn't hesitate. As @BCS613 (http://www.militaryjeepers.com/community/member.php?u=1922) said, that is what the piece on the rear hub is for. A Snap on ratchet or breaker bar fits perfectly.

My grandpa has done that with his old White tractor. Works really well. Got to have a stout branch and the chains have to be tight.
