Thinking about fabbing my own racing seat mounts?

I just came up with this idea don't have the money to try it now but thaught i'd put it out there

get the basic hard plastic racing seats for 40 bucks (summit) and build a mount using valve springs on each bolt to soften the ride

give me some feed back

I see where you're going with this I think. Get the bolts with no thread on it for the first inch or so? Let it slide in and out with the spring? If so, would an impact gain too much momentum in that inch? I like the idea, but you'd have to maintain the crap out of it. All the bouncing up and down would take it's toll somewhere, either by wallowing out the bolt hole, or the bolt head itself maybe?

yeah i guess i see what you mean, i talkin trail rig only no highway, and you have to remember that a 5 point harness will have to go in too and it's not attached to the seat so as long as that holds up you should be good.

I can definitely see it work. Maybe put motion limiting device attached from the frame to the seat? Kind of a back up for the bolts? If Big Truck Challenge guys trust them on their axles, you can trust it on your seat.

Actually, those seats can be bought with the little padded covers. I ran a pair in my CJ5 for a few years. They're actually quite comfy.

I don't think valve springs would offer much in the way of cushioning. If you were able to bottom them out, it'd feel much harder than a "hard mounted" seat.

Also, 5 point harnesses should be cage/body mounted and then cinched tight. You might not be able to keep them tight enough with a moveable seat.

I'd prefer a hard mount. I think it's safer, easier to do, and would just work better.
