Any ideas on how one could attach that hitch so that he could use that trailer?

Would that be strong enough with a bumper hitch with frame tie in? Or do I need to spring for full tow package?

Most Jeep bumpers use the 2" as a recovery point, and most manufacturers state its not for towing. I would suggest the full package.

The trailer pictured is a 3/4 ton, and will be a lot to tow if fully loaded. I'd make sure the hitch is up to it.

As far as a pintle, either suggestion will work well, I prefer the one piece over the bolt to plate style.

I have an M416 1/4 ton Jeep trailer, they tow great! There are also some great trailer sites out there that may have info on which bumpers with recievers will work well.

The main reason most aftermarket bumper manufacturers don't rate their bumbers for towing, is that a 2'' reciever is rated for more than a short wheel base, 1/4 ton Jeep can handle. If it's rated as a recovery point (versus an accessory mounting point, eg: bike rack) it should be good enough for a small trailer.

you dont want to tow more than 1500 lb with a jeep and right there your at 1000 not including the pentle that weighs about 50lbs by itself.

Anything you can do to increase that capacity Rick?

buy a lj or a 4 door jk. longer wheelbase can tow more.

A 'Weight Distributing Hitch' will make a heavier load safer and easier to handle on the road. Some say they can increase your towing capacity, and they do help a lot with a load over the rated towing weight, but just remember to always err on the side of caution. Short wheelbase towing can be really iffy. I've never personally seen one set up for a pintle, but it be pretty easy to set one up for it.

My M416 was changed (read: butchered)by PO to the 1 7/8'' ball coupler, not hard to do. I'm hoping to find a lunette (thats the ring on the trailer tongue) to bring mine back to original.

This size (4'x6') is perfect behind a CJ/YJ/TJ, and shares the bolt pattern of the CJ for the tires. Just need to get 7/16 lug nuts and you can use CJ or aftermarket wheels on it!

Thats a cool trailer, what year is on the plate? I've got one from Sep '68 in my pool, it's a POS though...

It's a '67 Really well taken care of! All I have done so far is make the top for it. I used it quite a bit in the year that I've owned it, picked it up for $275!!! Going to go through it (wheel bearings and stuff) and paint it this spring.

if you are going offroading i would highly suggest using a pintle hitch. there is a reason the military uses them. if you go over any kind of obstacle with a ball hitch then you have a high risk of the trailer becoming disconnected. a newbie was jeepin with us and he ended up leaving his trailer within the first 100 yards of trail. you can get pintle hitches very easily. check TSC and harbor freight.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to forgo the option because I want to make sure it's ready to pull. I'm not looking to pull a house, but a military style trailer would be sweet. Maybe later on...
