Jeep Differential Breather Tube Filters

While at the Quadratec Tent Show, I saw these in a jeep. This is more of just a post with some pics in case anyone is looking build the same thing.

The breather tube ran up through the tub and into these.

That's just a tiny paper filter attached to the end of the tube correct?

is it just a hollow cylinder between the tube and the filter?

I don't know. The fuel cell only looked like it held a gallon or so f fuel, and there was no snorkel, so I am guessing it is set up for rock crawling. IIRC, the air filter actually sat inside the cab area and looked it was routed through the firewall.

I just figured it would give people ideas if they were planning on trying to route their breather tubing higher.

it was for the diffs breather hose?
Not sure why you would really need a filter for those, maybe in a very sandy/dusty areas to help keep the fluid cleaner. Other than that I cant see a problem with the stock ones. I not sure the actual air intake on those is that much to begine with.

In our area, we hit some pretty deep water, so should the dif cool fast, and water be sucked into the dif, it could be a bad thing. I think this may just help since it is above the tub.

It is common to extend the diff breathers into the cab and put a small K&N on the ends. It is also very common to adapt the Air intake to run into the heater box, under the cowl, and run a K&N in there for that. Yes all this is is a piece or tube to protect the hose with the filter attachment welded to the top.

Rob told me about this company. They offer a direct mount and a remote mount dif air cleaner.

Direct Mount:

I've seen those Purple Cranium breathers in action and they work very well. They are compact in size so you don't have something else bulky hanging on your frame/axle. I am actually planning on running these on my TJ if I get into Top Truck Challenge 2009.

Those like pretty nice, I'll have to check them out. I've been wanting to extend my breather hoses for awhile now.

I've seen many vent tubes with the filters on the top, I was just curious if that was a system to trap water, that might accidentally get in. Having water sucked into the vent tube is not cool. Not to mention the non-lubricating repercussions of water in your diff, the fluid ends up looking milky and metallic...not good.
