Spark Plug Change

I'm getting ready to (attempt to) change the plugs on my 2005 TJ (maybe this weekend). When I went to Advance Auto Parts this afternoon, I was surprised to find out there was no need for spark plug wires (good thing I didn't place the order online that I put together)...only coil on plug boots. It all makes sense now why I was unable to locate the spark plugs or wires (I have since found them).

Anyway, before I tackle this project does anyone have any tips or suggestions, or any lessons learned the hard way to make the process go as smooth as possible? Any tool recommendations? I am planning on picking up a boot remover before I get started.

I'm going to assume you have the 4.0L engine. If that's the case, here's what you'll need:
- 3/8" ratchet
- 3" extension
- 13mm deep socket
- spark plug socket

Look on your coil pack assembly and locate the 4 13mm bolts. Remove the 4 bolts. Gently lift the coil pack assembly off. When you do, you will see an electronic plug at the end of coil pack assembly nearest the firewall. Gently slide the red safety latch and then depress the release lever. You can now remove the coil pack assembly from your jeep and set it aside. Remove the 6 spark plugs like normal. Installation is the opposite of removal.

A universal joint might come in handy

Just make sure you gap the plugs, and be careful when you put the coil pack back on, I shorted mine out a couple years ago when I changed the plugs in my TJ. $300 later it was fixed.

Disconnect battery.
