Need to take a trip to NY for some school visits the week of April 6. Need info on best way to get around ( POV, subway, cab?)- we'll be driving there. I hear parking is hard to get and $$$. Most of the schools are in the Manhatten area. Is it cheaper to stay in Jersey and take some other mode of trans into the city? Any info & help would be appreciated.

Hey DevilDog,
I would stay on the Jersey side and take the Path train into and out of the city. It's a real pain in the A$$ driving through the city during the week, and Parking is out of this world. Taxis, trains and busses are available to get you around town. Good Luck.

THANKS beecee!! I was starting to wonder if no one with a jeep went to NYCity. Know anything about the Navy Lodge on Staten Island? Know of any good places to stay at on the Jersey side with easy access to the Path train? :)

Hey DevilDog,
I don't know if they still have the Navy Lodge @ Ft. Wadsworth on Staten Island since the Navy pulled out of the Home Port and it was turned over to the Coast Guard. But anyway, if it's still open, the only way to get from SI to the city is too drive or take the Ferry. Best bet is to get a hotel close to Newark Airport and take the Path into the city. Don't get me wrong, you can drive into the city, but the traffic and congestion is a bitch, and like I said, parking is $$$ and it's hard to find.
I live in NJ, and was born in Brooklyn, and I won't drive in the city during the weekdays.

10-4 beecee. You put me in the right direction with the 411 about the PATH. I found their info & routes on the web last night. Found Fairfield Inn in Newark with free parking and figured the PATH from Journal SQ. to 33rd st. would be the best route. If you know of a better way - lay it on me. Thanks again!!

Cabs are awesome there. Look into Ft. Hamilton and see if they have a lodge there. We stayed there for a couple of events at my last unit and it was a short train ride from Manhatten. Cabs there are nothing like DC. We went 60 blocks for 9 dollars.

Thanks korisu56 - I'll check out Ft. Hamilton on the DOD lodge site and see what pops up. Do you know if the taxis charge more for multiple passengers or just the normal meter rate for distance/time.

Hey Dog,
I don't think you'll need bail in the city, NYC cops are pretty cool about military retirees. Most stupid things, when they see your retired ID card, they ask if your retired, and then they usually say God Bless You, and thanks. This is really the truth, most cops are vets, at least the older ones. As for food, if you can't find a place to eat in the city, then you don't belong there. There's food joints on every block (street) for you out-of-towners. Just enjoy your trip and keep a hand on your wallet.

have fun, and like beecee said, "Keep an eye on your wallet."

That's where I usually get in trouble. I think it's such a stupid ? and I come back with something like "no-I just carry a fake military ID around"

You both assume I have a wallet - I do, but: wife + 17 yr dau = $0.00

What I need is a laminated fold-up transit guide. We have 4 schools to visit and if she does go to school there this summer she will have to learn the transit system so that will be our only mode of transpo in the city. Not my idea of a va-ca. Anyways - I've got to find something to do while they are at the Racheal Ray (sp?) show too. Can't really picture myself sitting in the audiance for this - I'll propably be the only guy. Wouldn't know - never watched the show. Thanks for the info.

Oh - ya. Renegade - 10-4 on the dig. camera.

If you run into any trouble in the Ft Apache Bronx area, ask NY's finest if they know Pete Oggeri. My little brother will help you out, just tell them you know big sis, Donna. Have a blast in NY.

Hey JK408,
That was not directed at you guys, but what stupid things people do, especially tourists or visitors. My family had three in NYPD, Motorcycle 4, one in Narcotics, and the other in the 72nd, all now retired.
