Ok, I got the transmission out and opened up. There is no longer a reverse idler on the shaft; however, the case is full of bits and pieces. It also took out one reverse gear and chipped up the other. I'm taking it down to a shop Monday for a few small repairs.

I just wish I could find big chunks of the idler. The biggest pieces I can find are single teeth.

Oh well, newer and warrantied is in my future:D

We have a customer's CJ7 with a T5 in the shop right now. His countershaft and upper shaft 3rd gear looks worse than yours. Fourtunetly it's not beyond repair!

Saaayyyy, I like your thinking! That'd be like using a tow strap vs. a chain. Kinda stretchy and absorbs that inital impact.
I'm looking into this and may steal your idea.:D

lol, I am sure there is some sort of ploy something "harder than steel yet shock absorbing"

And the total; parts, labor and tax (including three seals in the t-case) is $639.90! Much better than I was expecting.

Thats awesome TBrock. Glad to see that you will be up and running for the weekend most likely. Hope to have mine back and up and running and have been told it should be but we will see.

LOL, may not make this weekend after all. I'm doing a little preventative maintenance...
Ok, I decided to wash the skid plate (parts washer will have to be drained and cleaned now, it’s full of grit) and that lead to other crap. Right now, the windshield is down, the dash is off and I’m pulling the wiring harness out!

It all started innocently enough:
I was cleaning up and prepping to put the transmission back in. While scraping the putty off of the tub (shifter cover plate seal), I noticed the throw out bearing looked odd. One of the two little clips that holds it to the clutch fork was broken; but I could see it clearly because they’d shoved the throw-out bearing onto the clutch fork by wedging the fork between the bearing’s mounting plate (with the clips) and the actual bearing body. I managed to get it out of the Heep and it naturally sounds “not so good”. While I was looking under the dash, I decided to go ahead and install the last of the three replacement environmental control cables. This required taking off the dash (and folding over the windshield), then I discovered why this cable had the knob pulled off; the vent was sticking and wouldn’t open correctly. Lubed up the assy and worked it for a while and mounted the new controls. That all seemed to be ok.

Then is when I noticed the factory computer (a Ford item) was still installed on top of the heater/vent box. Since I no longer have anything in the jeep that uses the box (I think…), I’m taking it and it’s cabling out as well and then I can mount the new computer in its location. It’s higher and drier than the new computer’s current location.

The skid plate looks really nice...

Glad to hear the damage won't leave too big of a burning hole in your wallet!! Nothing wrong with preventative maintenance.... just think of it as weight savings with getting rid of the old computer!!
