Gonna be PCSing to San Diego in July for a year for school. I am stoked for the drive across the country...going to go through the northern states and come back down through Nevada.

How are things out there? How is the Navy Hobby Shop? Do I need to look for a place with a garage or can I park on the streets out there without the truck ending up in TJ? Do you guys stil wave at each other?

Do I need to know anything else about living around the area?

thanx

I love it here, I can't leave! The hobby shop on NASNI isn't half bad, but I havn't been to any of the others. Let me know where you plan on living, some places you defiantly want some security but where I live I've left my Jeep topless and doorless with the keys in the ignition and never once had a single problem. There is not much waving around here, but I still do it to everyone, just only get 1 out of 5 or 6 back.

Anything else just ask.

thanx, fellows. I am going to go to IDC school at Balboa Park, so, ideally, i would not mind finding a place around there. All i really need is a room above a garage and a pot to piss in. I thought moving from Camp Lejeune to Chicago was going to be expensive for living, then i started to look on line for places in San Diego..... My tool box is good to go, so all i really need for hobby shop wise is someplace to do oil changes (recycles) and such. I plan on weekend excursions to parks and such. my rig is built but not for crazy stuff as it also serves as the DD.

Oh yeah SD is NOT cheap by any means, if you're looking for cheap look around Imperial Beach, but you wont be to close to Balboa, there is residential areas around it, but Balboa Park is a ultra nice part of town so it's all going to be expensive. If you find somewhere I can go check it out for you if you want. I'd offer to show ya around but I leave for Iraq in June. The hobby shop will more then fit your needs then.

perhaps craigslist ain't the place for looking. i'll be in barracks and will have 20 days of finding a place before school starts. I am going to go driving around and see what i may find. that is how i found my current place which has turned out to be quite adequate.

have fun.

We have some good members in that area...also, give a look to www.4x4corps.com (http://www.4x4corps.com). They are mostly military and Jeff Forrest has done a GREAT job getting it set up...great bunch of wheelers!

Just left there 6 months ago. Living down around San Diego is a bit pricey as you know. Getting into base housing out there is actually a good gig if it's off base. I lived in the Housing in Poway tucked behind Walmart. There is also good housing in Lakeside as well. BOTH locations have garages!! The Poway housing is relatively easy to get into. It's duplex style, w/ garage and own drive way. Plus additional parking. They mow and have just put in REALLY nice grass, leaving you time to work on your Jeep. The drive is not that bad as far as So Cal commuting goes. It's worth it to have good neighbors and a yard/garage and your own driveway. The Miramar Hobby shop is good and pretty close too. That would be a better comissary to use as well if you lived in Poway or Lakeside. Whether you get into housing or not, living is cheaper and nicer on the north side of town. Bad A$$ wheeling in Ocotillo Wells!! off of 78 East.

I was at Balboa just the other day and they have bulletin boards around there with many rooms to rent. Do you have a unit rep that does a welcome aboard package for you? There should eb local listings in there if they do it right.

Where are you going to be at? Which school are you checking in to? I'm at Balboa during the week, Pendleton on the weekends. I've got a little garage (currently occupied by my ZJ) but it should be empty soon. Shoot me a pm if you need anything.
