I've been working with the trans shop today and came up with a deal to put a Ford T18 into it. Gives me a granny low 1st and a 1:1 fourth. I lose overdrive but I won't be exploding this trans anytime soon. I'll post up pictures when I get it installed

All transmissions have a 1:1 ratio. 3rd in a 3 speed , 4th in a 4 speed , 4th in a 5 speed and 5th in a 6 speed are 1:1. The T18 is a great choice, Bomb proof and geared great for crawling. They swap in with ease and mated with a Dana 300 and twin sticks will last forever.

Good info, I want a 300 eventually.

Correct, most of the time. In the German-made ZF, 4th is 1:1 and 5th and 6th are both overdrives.

As was pointed out, this holds true for most auto/light truck transmissions. I was looking at anything that might prove bombproof. It had boiled down to a SM465 or the T18. Trans guy recommends the T18 as the muncie has a history of popping out of 3rd. With the T18, I can maintain my overall length, same clutch and skid plate.

I had a Mazda once that had a 1.4:1 or 1.3:1 4th and a .87:1 5th. I never really understood the point in that, but it was right there in the owner's manual, and the shop manual confirmed it. Neither my dad nor I had ever seen a gear set like that... But I agree, usually there is a 1:1.

Shop got the input shaft for the T18 and I got the t-case adapter in today. Should be putting it back together next week and then up in the hills next weekend.
