While I really like the TUFFY center console, the price is a bit high for me.(close to 3 bills) I had a bunch of 16 guage sheet steel 'drops' that I got from a steel tank business near my dads, so I decided to build one.
Tacking the peices together:

For the lid over the stereo, I wanted one piece with bends, instead of an angle iron frame. So I fabbed up a 'brake' for my press, worked great!

Primered up. The top lid closes over the lip of the stereo slot lid,so when the top lid is locked, the stereo is also locked.

I still need to install the lock, and build and attach a padded armrest.
It will be mounted to the cage tubes the seats are mounted on, with the bolts inside the console, so they can't just rip the whole thing out!

I already have the tent, battery and 20# propane tank, Just need a fresh water tank and pump, and a fridge/freezer. I need to finish it up, at least enough to use the tent. I'm heading to Moab in 18 days!! Be gone 9-10 days, with 5-6 days of wheeling! Can't wait!!:D

Sweet fab work. From the pics, it almost looks store bought. What kind of lock are you going to use?

Thanks! Not sure on the lock yet, have to see what I can find. I had a few nice ones from some hospital cabinets, a little beefier than the run of the mill cabinet locks. Just have to find them.:D I need something secure, becuase Im usually carrying, and I can't (legally) bring my handgun into someplaces, like if I have to run into the school when picking my son up, or the fedral courthouse.
Last fall my sons teacher wanted to talk to me, it was pouring out, and cold. I told her I couldn't go inside the building, I ended up driving home, dropping off my handgun, and going back to the school. Serious waste of time!
I still don't get that, In MN you can carry a weapon (with a permit, of course) in the school parking lot, but not in the building.
Hell, it's the people without permits that scare me!!!
So this will be especially nice in the CJ, jeeps aren't really secure even with a hardtop on! (and I don't even have keys for my doors and gate, so it's never locked anyway!)

Lookin good. Keep up the write ups.
This is probably the best lock and key set in the world.

They used to use those round keys on vending machines, but as people got smart and started to get around them, most smart vending machine companies upgraded to after market locks by medeco. They are not cut like your standard key, which is a very defeatable design. they are cut in more than one direction/angle
Kind of pricey, but if you want to protect something of value, and you put a nice lock box in your rig, it may help keep some knucklehead with some skills out. They may even be cheaper if you look on ebay.
