Nice area. I used to live on WSMR and Holloman. Nice town, friendly people.
Go down to Mesilla and eat at La Posta.

I was stationed there back in 91-92. Loved it but then again I'm from El Paso so I was home just about every weekend. I do have a few friends there now. What do you do? They are out on the craptor. Dont know about trails out there I do know that there is a lot of desert and mountains. Me and the wive used to go up to Cloudcroft and have pic-nics. Oh the good old day.
Hey TBrock, Thanks, will have to check it out.
CrewDawg, I'm retired, may pick up a job to keep me entertained, but want the flexibility to explore the area at will. We checked out the area for a few days and am looking forward to deeper explorations. I love the desert southwest, thats why we chose Alamogordo, plus access to the base facilities will be nice.
Wow, no Jeepers in the area on here, we'll have to fix that when I get down there.

Dunno, but there are a TON of Jeeps on base at Cannon, there should be a few down there...
Well, we made it, seeing lots of jeeps around, I guess folks here have not heard of this site yet. Checked with the National Forest Service, seems to be lots of great places to go in the area and surrounding mountains. May have to do some exploring this weekend if the weather clears.

I was there as a kid and active duty from 90-92, head up 1 St Ave till it dead ends, all kinds of trails at the base of the mountains. Also if you have access to the base there are all kinds of trails out past Tularosa Peak, used to be a nice swimming hole as well. Me personally, I prefer Cloudcroft and Sunset area. Cooler in the mountains and prettier, there are places you can get back into with streams as clear as bottled water and plenty of shade when your ready to stop. I also found by accident a couple of ways over the mountains from Carlsbad Caverns the hard way (you'll need some cans of gas).

WELCOME TO THE LAND OF ENTRAPMENT!
I spent 02 to 07 at Holloman.
I just arrive at Holloman,AFB fam camp #4.
I been here before. There is a nice hill at Lincoln National Forest.
There is a nice observation area on top of the mountain (9850 feet)
To get there is a winding trail about 8 or 9 grade, some rock but not bad
I climbed with my wrangler X stock.....The view is OUTSTANDING.
If you want to meet let me know. And I'll show the place.
PM or e-mail me warrior@militaryjeepers.com
PS i just read your Blog and found out you been there allready.

there's a spot on the north side of the base near the Tularosa Gate called "Tulie peak" that's pretty cool to drive out to. There's a pretty awesome view from there too.

Cool, how far north of the base and is the road to the gate marked?
Thanks
Hey there. I am in Iraq now, but stationed in El paso, Ft. Bliss. There are some really awesome trails around Las Cruces. Some big ledges and rocks to crawl, to easy trails that will put a stock Jeep to the test.
Someone earlier mentioned going to Mesilla, you should go there to the old square. Awesome restaurant with white picket fence, can't remember the name. Don something. Best damn Bacon Cheeseburger with green chiles I ever had.
Check out olskool4x4.com. They go wheelin every month and they are a great bunch of people. They post trail runs on site.
19 Sept. BFGoodrich will be filming them on the trail, right outside El Paso, Jaundo Pass, check it out.

I believe it's the highest point on HAFB.
there are abandoned telescope mounts and some old cold war era tranceiver station on the peak of the hill. They like to park testing equipment on top sometimes but most of the time it's desolate.

directions are somewhat difficult because few of the roads north of the airstrip are named and even fewer have markings.
If you have GPS or can look it up online the coord are
33°01'35.47" N
106°08'21.17" W
Thanks again guys,
I have been out with the Ol'Skool guys and you are right , a great bunch. We did the Dona Ana area and am headed out with them again in Nov for Broad Canyon.
