Well Hey.
I just figured I'd post up I'm heading home after 6 months here and going back to OK. And my Jeep's gonna love the "extra pay" cause it's getting new gears and lockers (and a new front DS too) any questions on them fire away :)

Here are a few pics
the old fleet (was trying to get this in my sig, but it did not let me)

Welcome, my outlaws are from dinE. There are pleanty of places to wheel in OK, just not directly around you. Disney and Clayton are both pretty good places to wheel. The Scrambler Owners Association is having our national event at Clayton this year. Where we will be giving away the Scrambler that was built by members in the organization with all proceeds going to charity...(shameless plug)....

Welcome. Where in Afghanistan?
Bagram Air Base and I'll admit it's been an interesting ride. I am Air Force and I've spent 5 months with the 82nd and about 1 month now with the 101st...... BOTH INTRESTING groups of people. (the rivalry is funny though)

and 02tj: that's one reason I joined the Air Force.. shorter more infrequent deployments.. less time away from the wife and kids ;) BUT I truely feel for anyone who has gotten tagged with a 12-15 month deployment... THAT SUCKS!!!

Well I caught the 82nd at the tail end of 14-15 months so they were WORN out. the 101 has been here for about a month, and they HAVE TO CHANGE EVERYTHING that was 82nd... HA HA it's funny really.

Congratulations on coming home safe and a job well done.

What size motor are you running in the heep? I swear by Ford's 2100 series that came in 70's Ford Cars and trucks. It is only a 2V carb but I've been strait up and strait down with it and side to side and it's taken me through the worst (aka the best) obstacles without a hickup. The only problem I had was fuel delivery at steep upward angles which has since been fixed with an electric pump. Here's a link which has quite a bit of info on them and the different bore and cfm ratings. You have to scroll down a bit but it's all there: http://http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=131514&highlight=Ford+barrel+carb

The other carb people swear by is the old Quadrajet. I want to buy one of the ones built by Edlebrock but I don't think they are making them anymore. :( They pretty much built on a good design and made it better. Taking one of a wrecker you know ran well previous to the vehicles demise also works well. The purpose of the Q jet is three fold. It works good in off camber situations, It get's good fuel economy if you can keep off the skinny peddle because of it's tiny primaries, and it has plenty of get up and go for when you want to get on it because of it's HUGE secondaries. Just my .02. :)

well I was at Bagram working with the 82nd and 101st Airborne!!! yeah go ahead and feel sorry for this Air Force guy LOL

OK back to the Jeep. It's Looking like the wife (in her wonderful moment of me returning home) has agreed to let me just say screw it and go with MPI AND I still get to do gears and lockers :) DAMN I LOVE MY WIFE (and the wonderful extra pay from a deployment)

I just started it today and I'm thinking the crappy wally world battery is shot (will not hold a charge.....go figure... now if I can just find that reciept LOL)

It felt good to get it started again, but the itch to tear it apart is getting REALLY hard not to scratch SOON

well I'll start a thread on what I get done (when I get all the parts)

4.88s for 35s

korisu56
04-18-2008, 15:20
he wants to go 37's eventually, so IMO the question should read 4.88's or 5.13's.

What are you the resident gear expert now?

BigNorm

It depends. If he has a regular 4 speed (not one with granny low 1st gear) or a 5 speed I'd say go with 5.13s

If he is running a 3 speed auto like I am then it'd be smart to stick with the 4.88s. I run a 40" TSL swamper and with 5.13s I hit around 3000 rpm at 55 mph.

Also one thing to consider is that the higher the gearing (numerically) gets the smaller the pinion gets and it's more prone to breakage because of it. I'm hoping he has at least a D44 if not larger axle. The larger the tire the more torque on the axle, diff and carrier. Not to mention the tubes themselves. I have a bud with a biiiig motor and he's actually spun the tubes on a 14 bolt housing. Which is just plain stupid IMO but it does show it can be done. :)

I'm far from any expert on anything. Wasn't it you who posted that chart though? That's what I based my opinion off of :D
